I got Final Cut more than 12 years ago and learned the workflows, which I can still use today. Another bonus is that I paid for it back then and got all the updates since for free. Most of my video editing nowadays is pretty basic, so with me knowing the ins and outs of the software, that's an easy sell. Nonetheless I think I'll give those two a try. As you say, they're free. What's the worst that can happen....

They're not better, you prefer them for your situation, as you said in the video. I'm getting tired of the "BEST" narrative, as they should all exist in a healthy ecosystem. They all have something different going for them. The need for features is not absolute and universal. DR took some years to become good. 5-6 years ago it was bloated, unstable and not user friendly at all. Also, CapCut is great because it kind of ripped of FCP and branded it for gen z. They do not exist in a vacuum and they didn't get better from fresh new ideas. We need all of them.

But also the TV/Film industry work 99% in Avid and then a lot of TV industry use Adobe. That's the way it is. Having worked for 8 years in TV and witnessed the lack of development in the post-production side of the industry, it's not going to change anytime soon. Archives upon archives of shows and films are all Avid projects. The industry isn't going to go down the Resolve route as it's NLE.

You can do it in DaVinci Resolve Studio (paid version). But Topaz Labs software is better (and more expensive). Topaz video AI goes for $299,-. DaVinci Resolve is great for denoising etc. But again, you'll need the Studio licence ($299). If you go with Topaz Labs Video AI, be sure to export in ProRes format. You will need a professional software like Resolve, to edit that video format, though. But you don't need the Studio version for that. Topaz Video AI comes with a trial option.

I use Linux, so i considered Davinci, but i tried Olive first and I've been happy with it. For basic use-cases it works. The main thing that got me to try olive first is it handles almost any video format and is open source, which is great. Obviously can't compare to Davinci etc. I'm keen to try Davinci. I will definitely check out your Davinci tutorial video.

Loved the video, thank you! You're making me wanna leave Final Cut right NOW. That said, what does one do when they have endless hours of footage and projects already established for an ongoing doc? It just seems way too daunting to move over Capcut - unless there's some way to drag/drop FCP libraries / projects. But that seems unrealistic.

I am with you. The only annoying thing at the moment: I would love to find a free alternative for DR Studio's Magic Mask... Caz I like to play with some more advanced VFX. And have you ever tryed to mask e.g. a moving cat with the pen tool (and manually retroscoped it)?? But since it s more or less a hobby for me (not earning any money with video editing), even though it s cheaper in the long run, I still cant justify the cost of the Studio Version.

what am I missing with capcut? It doesn't allow you to encode mpeg loss less masters, only mp4, also the audio track is hardly visible. cutting seems to be far more tedious than Premiere or Vegas Pro.

How good is CapCut for Color Grading? I want to do it all in the same program. I would really need the animatotion library and easier learning curve of CapCut. Also DaVinci seems to be very GPU hungry.

Since it's free, I'd say the best option would be to take a video you've color graded before and put it into CapCut and see if it's intuitive for you and whether you can get the same quality. CapCut works fine for me, but I'm also a beginner. Davinci wasn't intuitive for me but I've never put in the time to learn it when Capcut does what I need.

Been using adobe products for 4 years. I am planning to abandon it this year, specifically at the end of September when my subscription ends. I started to learn davinci for long form video editing and short form video with capcut. I was really impressed with how these two actually work. My most tedious learning curve was replacing after effects with fusion. But I really enjoy the process. I still use the Adobe for some specific projects as I won't pay the cancelation fee for my subscription lol

Hi Ben. Great stuff. If you haven't already, would you consider commenting/doing a video on how DaVinci and CapCut behave with Insta360 video editing? I'm still finding it easier to keyframe in Insta360 Studio, export and THEN bring the video into Premiere for more work. Surely that's too clunky and limiting for a workflow. Do DaVinci and CapCut handle the equivalents of GoPro FX Reframe plugin, etc. better? Thanks!

Hi Peter, Davinci can reframe 360 videos internally (I have lessons in my 360 Video 101 course that teach this) and CapCut can do the exact same job premiere is doing for you now (editing clips that have already been reframed in Insta360 Studio) 👍🏻

Once ran through Capcut Just to add clips together. When I watch edited video it has lost quality. recording in and exporting in 4k 30fps... Kind of stuck...

I have been using Davinci resolve for over 2 years.. but since I upgraded my computer to a 4070Ti card with 64Gb of DDR5 VRAM and a 13th Gen i9, the program just keeps crashing on renders, and, since 18.6, it crashes about every 5 min while editing. It worked fine on my 9th gen i9 with a 2080 card.. not sure what gives.. but I gotta find something else.. took me TWO days to edit a 45 min vid this week... just from constantly having to restart. Anyone else having this issue or any ideas on what I can try?

I have been using PP since its inception - I was a beta tester for Adobe way back in the day. Anyway, I am going to be retiring soon and will not be able to justify the cost of the Adobe suite. So, I have been looking for alternatives to Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere. I have pretty much landed on Da Vinci for video, but the jury is still out on the other tools. Anyway, thanks for the confidence booster - I'm sure I'll be fine once all is said and done.

Nice video. While my company pays for our Adobe CC I’m wondering your thoughts for creatives who utilize Ps and Ai? I’m in and out of those programs daily and bringing assets from them. It’s nice to be able to right-click and edit in the native program with the edit being reflected in Pr. I think this is what Adobe is charging for, not a modern interface. I’ve never tried CapCut. However, DaVinci Resolve (as of August 2023) has crashed my computer just trying to open it (AMD Ryzen 5 5600x, 32GB RAM, 1TB Firecuda SSD, and AMD Radeon 6600x 8GB GDDR6 video card). That and the learning curve were why I’ve stayed away from Resolve. Suggestions?
