Vanished Chicagoland Presents: Vanished Chicago Radio Stations.

Фильм және анимация

Here are photos of radio stations that have disappeared from the airwaves. A few of them have change formats. This is a radio aircheck from disc jockey Jim Summers on WMET-FM 95 1/2 in Chicago from 1977.

Thank you for sharing. I moved to Chicagoland in 1989 and remember so many of these defunct radio stations. Great memories!

Thanks for this! You reminded me of WAIT which played the easy stuff, but I also recall a rare station that did that music as well-WNUS "the quiet oasis"

I recognize about a third to half of those stations - especially WBEE(1570) - I used to listen to Daddy O'Daylie as a kid.

Wow-I remember alot of those stations although there’s a few I never heard of. I luved the R & B station WGRT/W Great where the dial was in between WLS & WCFL back in the day. The signal was weak but we still struggled to tune it in on our transistors. Was very upset that WNUA/Smooth Jazz was yanked without warning. They later said listenership was down but I don’t believe that. There had to have been other factors going on.

My only complaint is the WMET aircheck in the background was distracting. You did a nice job with this. You even had a few I forgot. Keep your eyes out for WWMM, that was at 92.7 from '72 to '81. They put bumper stickers in the Sunday paper and half of Chicago had one...

I remember the styrofoam balls WLS/WCFL AM’s used as promotional items back in the 1960’s that had a hole on the bottom to put on your car antenna. I used to get mad when they would steal them off the car.

Nice job. Thank you. I miss WNIB. If there are no classical stations in Chicago, I won't listen to any music stations.

I was stationed in Great Lakes at the time and listened to WMET a lot (loved the battles of the songs!) and of course *The Loop* WLUP. Can you say "COHO!"

I even miss the AM radio stations that played the classic standards like Frank Sinatra & Andy Williams-then it was WIND which I didn’t listen to but my Parents did but they had a couple of them in recent years I listened to that they got rid of but I can’t remember the call letters. They always get rid of the best radio stations.

Hi, Pete...Just a suggestion...Since summer is right around the corner, for some wonderful nostalgia (which we can use right about now!), how about highlighting life as a kid in the 60's? I remembering going to Hollywood Kiddyland as well as the Kiddyland in Melrose Park. There was also Hawthorne Mellody Farm (they had a train ride which lead to a ghost town); Russell's BBQ; Zephyr and Buffalo ice cream shops; the old Randhurst Mall; Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine; Woolworth on Lincoln and Belmont; neighborhood church carnivals; Kiddie-a-go-go; Whammo toys; The Thunderbirds; WGN kid shows; Shenanigans and HR Puff-n-Stuff on Saturday mornings; Colorforms and The Thing Maker; "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies; wooden swings and teeter totters; incense punks; Jello 1-2-3, Tang, Ron Santo Pizza...I think you get the idea! LOL

That was my generation with all those DJ’s except Biondi had just left the station by the time I started listening to a transistor radio some time in 1963. “Ringo” Ron Riley was my favorite. I just luved WLS AM personality radio in those days. The DJ’s did an excellent job in entertaining us & we looked up to them. My Parents were listening to WIND AM with DJ’s like Howard Miller at this timeframe.
