Dear Vandana Shiva, we are happy you are doing so much for the organic sector in agriculture and protecting seeds. I belong to the Indigenous community of the 7 islands of Mobaim / Bombay. Our ancient focus was always on biodiversity first. Farming in low tide salt marshes gave our people the salt variety rice. Sadly with the right wing and their colonial ways here in India, our islanders are now marginalised, our lands taken for development projects and many variety of seeds disappeared. We must now focus on ecosystems and not only agriculture to feed one human species the variety of plant species. We must think of leaving the natural system alone and only forage and farm without extending our lands into the forests. We have our ancient indigenous customs that are in harmony with 'Mai Maati' (Mother Nature). The Aryans came, rishis observed the indigenous and then formalised the systems of food and medicine and then colonising the indigenous nation. I work with the indigenous tribes all over India. And they feel the same. They grow pepper and other crops but are given a miserable deal by the baniya (Hindu) community who sells and exports them. Our indigenous peoples lands are taken away by giving voting rights to non-indigenous migrants who change the topography and the biodiversity with their wicked ways (Assam, Bengal, NE, Kokan, etc.). We must speak some time on this. i can give you a perspective of the indigenous of India. My Genetics show 60,000 years in the same latitudes 72 degrees east (Mobaim Islands) through the national geographic genome project. Our ancestry is not 4 or 5000 years as per Aryan data. Ours is older. Sadly our indigenous people are relegated to second class citizens, our people are killed in Operation Green Hunt, and in Mining activities by the non-indigenous through contracts given to friends of the sanskari government. Our Indigenous are the marginalised and the sanskari are posing as the new organic farmers. Where is the indigenous in all of your presentations? I have many indigenous Kumao friends and researchers. This monopoly of the indigenous ways must stop and credit given where due. I was at the UNCCD COP 14 and i raised my voice for the indigenous of India and the world over. Our knowledge systems are ancient (More than 5000 years). Everything is not meant to be eaten. But to be shared with the other sentient beings who share the planet with us (Bugs, birds, animals, micro organisms - Little ones). We are aware of what plant species can be eaten, but we dont eat all. Because we know which insects and animals eat them. This knowledge many dont have. That love and empathy for Mai Maati not all have. Please look at farming only for human 'Need' not for human 'Greed'. Our baniya and other traders who have our essential commodities in the stock market for their profit are killing our people and our land and then they migrate to USA UK for a better life. I wish people would listen and hear her, and use our purchases to remove power from the top billionaires. We are the reason they have so much power and we are becoming poorer and more destitute.

I have been following Dr Vandana Shiva since the late 80s. An absolutely extraordinary woman. Extreme technocratic elitism in culture, agriculture, finance and technology - a small coterie of psychopaths causing devastating destruction to all that is free, living and truly human. Monsanto and Microsoft are not the embodiment of capitalism. They actually represent the corruption of capitalism by mega corporations. Capitalism is the small family farmer who owns his own land, works hard to raise his crop and then uses or sells the proceeds as he chooses to support himself and his family. That farmer has a huge incentive to care for the land that he needs to provide for his family.

@@buckthorn7084 Uh, no. Capitalism is by definition the control of the economic processes of society by those who own capital. Hence the word CAPITALism. What you're describing is the very opposite of capitalism. It is subsistence farming or fair trade economics. Where everyone produces what they like and either consumes it themselves or trades it fairly with other producers or consumers. Theoretically, capitalism replaced subsistence economics. But now we need to wipe out capitalism and bring what you are describing back. To give everyone a right to contribute to the economic life of a society and to reap the benefits. Everyone. Equally. That is true civilization and advancement.

If a small farmer, who owns his own land, decides to sell some of his produce at a road side stand, he and his customer have engaged in capitalism. Capitalism is not a dirty word, but just like ANY economic system, it can be abused by those who see others as a means to an end. The alternative to capitalism is some form of collectivism where the individual is reduced to a mere cog in the economic machinery of the state.

Shiva has attracted intense criticism from the scientific community for perpetuating long-debunked myths about agriculture, biotechnology and food safety. "Shiva is scheduled to speak in late January at Stanford University and the University of California, Santa Cruz on “equitable and sustainable” farming methods. @@sandyg9362 The individual lives can certainly go on being individual. What matters is that the farmers need to change how they see their land and become land managers, not farmers. There is really not much need to get into debt buying seed, buying chemicals to put on the land. The farmer can make more food, make more money if they begin applying the principles Dr. Shiva proposes. And no need to break their backs plowing the earth.

I studied agriculture but today I'm a primary school teacher. When I graduated and realised the reality of the work I would participate in I had a mental breakdown because it made no human sense. I started gardening in my home and encourage me friends and family this was great but i didn't get to a point of making enough capital to pay bills. Today I teach because I need to get back to a point where I can farm to pay the bills mentally and economically .

Shiva is no newbie to GMO. She speaks often against it. Her celebrity status gives her high visibility. Recently, Shiva claimed that Bill Gates perpetuates Monsanto’s work by promoting GMO in India. She said GMO crops have a lower yield than non-GMO. She also said farmers would not choose GMO if not for Gates’s influence. Her claims are baseless. I come from a region with high agricultural output. I know many farmers. The Indian government has no control over their choices of seeds. Farmers are concerned about their livelihood. Most prefer crops that give larger yield. Why? You can guess. They give higher profit margins. Farmers prefer [biotech] crops. Only a few experiment with organic farming. Many so-called “organic” products in India have high traces of toxins. That makes them dangerous. But they also cost twice as much as non-“organic.” Expensive, organic coconut oils from India sold in the United States may not be completely organic, despite certification. Shiva is popular in the media. But 95% of the farmers I know (hundreds in my own family circle) reject her ideas. India’s two major political parties support GMO. True, a few individuals side with the anti-GMO lobby. But the dominant position is based on solid scientific testing. Yet anti-GMO groups have blocked GM crops through court interference. Shiva is a leading agent. Shiva’s claims on GMO farming are false. She calls Golden Rice a hoax. Golden Rice is a GM variant that can help eradicate vitamin A deficiencies that cause blindness and death. Scientific authorities in nations like the US and Canada declare it safe and beneficial. Over 100 Nobel Laureates have hailed it. Although Shiva is involved in an anti-GM cartel, she is ignorant about GM. She is neither a biologist nor an expert on genetic science. Her bachelor’s degree was in physics. She specialized in the philosophy of science. Her doctoral dissertation mused on the “hidden variables and locality in quantum theory.” Vandana Shiva is a radical environmentalist.
