Vandana Shiva on the Problem with Genetically-Modified Seeds

For more go to: billmoyers.com/segment/vandana...
Bill talks to scientist and philosopher Vandana Shiva, who's become a rock star in the global battle over genetically modified seeds. These seeds -- considered "intellectual property" by the big companies who own the patents -- are globally marketed to monopolize food production and profits. Opponents challenge the safety of genetically modified seeds, claiming they also harm the environment, are more costly, and leave local farmers deep in debt as well as dependent on suppliers. Shiva, who founded a movement in India to promote native seeds, links genetic tinkering to problems in our ecology, economy, and humanity, and sees this as the latest battleground in the war on Planet Earth.

You are preaching the opposite. Unlike what you said, not using agrochemicals will cause extinction because it will unable the farmers to produce enough food for the increasing population. You also have to remember the fact that in the present modern era, only 2% of the population are working as farmers and are responsible for feeding the rest 98% of the population. So fewer farmers will need modern agrochemicals to feed others. Let's be optimistic and not pessimistic (having paranoia that agrochemicals were used to kill people in Hitler's lab also means it is used now to kill us). Please remember that dosage is what matters. A medication dosage used to cure a person can also kill someone if overdosed (suicide). However, this does not mean that we should stop buying medications to treat ourselves and have the paranoia that doctors want to kill us. The dosage used as agrochemicals is only enough to kill little insects and not large human beings like us. If people are dying due to this, it is because they are not using proper protective equipment while working with fertilizers or they are consuming it on purpose to commit suicide. Again, using proper equipment is necessary for the farmers because they will get exposed to large doses while delivering the medication, however, the residue left on the crops after harvest is minimal and will not harm the consumers as per much evidence in scientific literature. Everything has risks. That's why there is a Risk vs benefits ratio, eg: every medication has side effects, still it is more beneficial to use it when you are sick. People, please look for information in scientific literature and people who have enough credits and knowledge in the agricultural field. There is FDA, Health Canada, and many other trustworthy sites to rely on.

In existence there is nobody who is superior and nobody who is inferior. The blade of grass and the great star are absolutely equal... But man wants to be higher than others, hence he has to fight continuously. All complexity arises out of this fight. The innocent person is one who has renounced fighting; who is no longer interested in being higher, who is no longer interested in performing, in proving that he is someone special; who has become like a roseflower or like a dew drop on the lotus leaf; who has become part of this infinity; who has melted, merged and become one with the ocean and is just a wave who has no idea of the 'I'. The disappearance of the 'I' is innocence.

Thank you for your great comments! Your statement that "there is nobody...superior and...inferior" particularly caught my attention...I would like to offer these thoughts to you: The idea that men want "to be higher than others" is actually a thought process known by some of us as "verticalization". In this [diseased] mind set all beings [in this case, living beings] are placed on vertical shelves [so to speak] such that those beings on 'higher' vertical levels are considered to be superior to others [existing on 'lower' levels]. This thought process can be found in areas such as religions, science, and in socio-political ideologies... More on this in a future posting. Thanks for reading.

thank you for your repost! that made me look into the concept of ''verticalization'' and get new perspectives on human civilization. unfortunatly, Aldous Huxley has predict this, that we, one day, would be born into the world brainwashed and preconditioned by society, as he claims on his book ''Brave New World'' from 1932. this is happening now and we have to be conscious and realize that we all have give them the feeling of power to control us and turn this world catastrophic. it is no longer sustainable, industries have destroied our planet, money became the #1 motivation in people for living and we started to forget simple behaviours of humanity like compassion not competition, equality not racism, and the list goes on, sadly. with all that said, i do share the idea that society will end sooner than we think. have you heard about the freetown of Christiania? we should all live in comunity not society. we are one, all interconnected! why deny it?

I always loved listening to her talks, she makes so much sense. #BhagvadGita is the book of all time, anyone who has not read it is missing out. Sadly social media, which was supposed to create connection only ended up dividing people due to vested interests. even more difficult is the fact that corporations want to monopolize and they outsource production to maximize profits. And that only makes climate change worse. It is most definitely interconnected.

  • @niladridas757

Modern methods of farming are simply not sustainable. Small farmers pay the brunt as the increase in yield is negligible (ground reality is different from these Corporations' claims). Also soil health deteriorates fast due to pesticide use. And it is no secret that "scientific publications" in journals of repute are often found to be wrong, or put forth deceptively.

The ability to discern information offered through todays digital media outlets, is going to be one of the greatest challenges humanity will be facing in the future. The type of awareness needed to understand what is happening in the world today and why more and more people have difficulties grasping what is happening to them individually, is gradually being eroded by endless streams of force-fed and manipulative information.

She is a physicist not a biologist. The lotus is known as the purest flower, it’s not for only its look, but also in its genetic blueprint. It’s secret is in the genetic structure of the leaf, that rolls off water in a sphere that bounces off and carries dirt with it. It’s the cleanest flower and became a symbol of purity for ages. The secret to nature is in the genetic makeup, just as inside us. I used to be against GMOs, for the sake of them being not “natural”, but that’s not true. Everything is nature. Microbiologists are highly attuned to nature and understanding leaf structure at the micro level to be able to choose which DNA traits for a crop will allow a crop to retain more water, or leaves that angle more up to the sun as they droop. It’s exactly what ancient farmers did, by choosing the best traits. Understanding nature at the micro complex structure will give humanity an amazing ability to create amazing things and not be subject to the “dice of fate of nature ”, but to move in harmony with the elements and like magic, wield them. After learning about how much horrible droughts Africa farm lands are in, and a lack of food, I understand GMOs. It’s using the gift of nature of DNA within the plant to select the best genes for areas were climate concerns are a reality. I will suggest that it would be best not to use all GMO seeds, but allow for the ones that have part of the natural evolution over years to exist still. Gates bought 50% of farmland to help against drought and famines, and I think he should stop there. But I see the environmental impact of humans has caused us now to have to “rework” some natural designs in order for them to grow in the dismal climate that human pollutions and green house effects created. Nature is perfect, however humans have made growing conditions very tough and challenging. GMO seeds are in a way helping plants grow much better in harsher conditions. Crops are dying because of climate changes, that’s a fact that she does not want to face. Freezing over, droughts and famine are a serious threat. They are beyond natural cycles and seasons of nature. In Japan, the Cherry Blossom trees bloomed too soon in over hundreds of years, because of the weather change. There are dying crops from locusts, parasites and not enough light or water due to too cold or too hot weather. When a species becomes able to understand the structure of nature, they can then use it to its highest potential. I am excited for our world to be one of Nature Tech and Biomimicry, where we use the secrets of nature to create amazing technology. Understanding how to implement the natural technology of nature into our society. 🌸🌿 I found Nova’s documentary called “Human Nature” & “Nature Tech” series on KZread or Amazon, show a hopeful future of infinite possibilities. All is One. Nature and technology, micro and macro, as above so below. There should be no distinction, see all clearly now. Let me propose a serious question, do you like chemical sprayed pesticides? Or would you rather a plant ward off it’s invaders naturally?

finding the most productive plant is not bad it can be done to an extent with tissue culture, but what she is stating is the companies engaged gmos and trying to create a monopoly by forcing farmers to have to pay companies even when they did not choose by pollination of gmos, we can achieve high productivity by eliminating monocultures, pests can be controlled by biological methods, yes it will not produce mass crops but its healthy and in the long it makes economic sense.

Ill advised, yet advice still taken, and without any proper field testing before a widespread ban. During a time where Sri Lanka's sovereign debt should have been it's main concern. Maintaining stable GDP on their exports meant taking no risks until they economically could. That said, although I do think Vandana bears some responsibility here, so does responsibility lie with those in formal positions of power for Sri Lanka. I am inclined to believe that there are multiple factors at play.

"In June 2014, Indian and international media reported that Navdanya and Vandana Shiva were named in a leaked, classified report by India's Intelligence Bureau (IB), which was prepared for the Indian Prime Minister's Office.[47] The leaked IB report raises concerns over the foreign-funding of Indian NGOs whose campaigning activities, the report claims, are hampering India's growth and development. In its report, the IB said that Indian NGOs, including Navdanya, receive money from foreign donors under the 'charitable garb' of campaigning for human rights or women's equality, but instead use the money for nefarious purposes. "These foreign donors lead local NGOs to provide field reports which are used to build a record against India and serve as tools for the strategic foreign policy interests of the Western governments," the IB report states.[48] Investigative journalist Michael Specter, in an article in The New Yorker on 25 August 2014 entitled "Seeds of Doubt",[10] raised concerns over a number of Shiva's claims regarding GMOs and some of her campaigning methods. He wrote: "Shiva's absolutism about G.M.O.s can lead her in strange directions. In 1999, ten thousand people were killed and millions were left homeless when a cyclone hit India's eastern coastal state of Orissa. When the U.S. government dispatched grain and soy to help feed the desperate victims, Shiva held a news conference in New Delhi and said that the donation was proof that "the United States has been using the Orissa victims as guinea pigs" for genetically-engineered products, although she made no mention about that those same products are approved and consumed in the United States. She also wrote to the international relief agency Oxfam to say that she hoped it wasn't planning to send genetically modified foods to feed the starving survivors."[10] Cases of plagiarism have been pointed out against Vandana Shiva. Birendra Nayak has published on her plagiarism involving copying verbatim from a 1996 article in Voice Gopalpur in her 1998 book Stronger than Steel.[51] Several paragraphs of an article by S Faizi on the Plachimada/Coca-Cola issue published in The Statesman in 2015 were plagiarized by Vandana Shiva in an article she published a year later.[52] Journalist Keith Kloor, in an article published in Discover on 23 October 2014 entitled "The Rich Allure of a Peasant Champion", revealed that Shiva charges US$40,000 per speaking lecture, plus a business-class air ticket from New Delhi. Kloor wrote: "She is often heralded as a tireless 'defender of the poor,' someone who has courageously taken her stand among the peasant farmers of India. Let it be noted, however, that this champion of the downtrodden doesn't exactly live a peasant's lifestyle."[53] Wikipedia - Shiva en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vandana_Shiva#Indian_Intelligence_Bureau_Investigation

Fool! Shiva is a total fraud. *Shiva has attracted intense criticism from the scientific community for perpetuating long-debunked myths about agriculture, biotechnology and food safety. * "Shiva is scheduled to speak in late January at Stanford University and the University of California, Santa Cruz on “equitable and sustainable” farming methods. Her positions on a variety of issues have irked and at times outraged scientists who consider her a disseminator of misinformation who profits at the rate of $40,000 a lecture (or more) to spread propaganda critical of mainstream views of biotechnology. Raised in prosperity, this Indian Brahmin was formally trained as a philosopher, embracing and promoting a form of Quantum Theory that is now widely dismissed. She often falsely claims that she is a trained physicist, and those false ‘scientific’ credentials are often echoed by her supporters. The GLP has carried numerous articles about her history of misstatements and fabrications (here, here, here). She was the subject of a scathing critique, “Seeds of Doubt,” by Michael Specter of The New Yorker, which documented her history of misleading claims and what Specter maintained often verged on anti-science gibberish. For more than three decades, she has relentlessly campaigned against globalization, focusing on food and agriculture socio-economic issues and an opposition to GMOs, free trade and intellectual property rights. She alternately promotes land redistribution, indigenous and peasant farmers’ rights, organic-only food production and ayurvedic health practices over conventional medicines, all of which she characterizes as an “earth democracy” movement necessary to restore “harmony,” people and nature. Shiva receives financial backing from high-profile activist groups such as the Center for Food Safety, which shares offices with her in Washington. Among her most controversial talking points is her false claim that there was no hunger in India prior to the Green Revolution. The truth is almost 180 degrees the opposite, as the Green Revolution, marked in part by the introduction of synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides enable massive increases in food production. A recent review of the evidence shows, “the production of cereal crops tripled during this period, with only a 30% increase in land area cultivated.” Shiva also blames the Green Revolution for increasing poverty, indebtedness and despair among farmers. Her notorious allegation that the introduction of insect-resistant GMO crops in India led many farmers to commit suicide has been evaluated and dismissed as inaccurate. Shiva is also a fierce opponent of so-called Golden Rice, a crop engineered to combat vitamin A deficiency in developing countries. In response to the scheduling of her two talks at Stanford and UC Santa Cruz, 39 scientists from around the world co-authored an open letter to both universities protesting the invitations. The signatories told the GLP that their aim is to alert the events’ organizers, participants and attendees to the numerous falsehoods in Shiva’s philosophy. The letter, reproduced below in full, blasts Shiva for her “use of anti-scientific rhetoric to support unethical positions.” Neither university has scheduled a scientist to present the evidence-based case for crop biotechnology." geneticliteracyproject.org/2020/01/14/39-biotech-experts-open-letter-protests-anti-gmo-activist-vandana-shivas-anti-science-talks-at-stanford-and-uc-santa-cruz/
