I used to live in Glen Rock, NJ ('80s) and would fish at Ramapo Lake occasionally. I remember the ranger that lived in a house lakeside had a flock of Guinea fowl. Those birds used to follow us all around the lake looking for hand-outs. It was about a mile hike uphill from Rte. 208 in Oakland. I could see the castle ruins from the lake, but never explored them. Thanks for this video, it fills a curiosity I had about this place.

Wow that was fantastic. Some pretty views there. Turtle and lizard were totally gorgeous. What beautiful stonework that is, how stunning was that, was so worth all those wows. Really loved that. Thanks for taking me along. Please stay safe and take care

Excellent video! Was a great day for sure! You were right about that turtle. When I showed Danny when I got home, he did say it was semi-aquatic. :-) Great day with great people indeed! Have a great one!

We appreciate all you do to let us 'come along'. I love hiking but us 64 year old ladies really shouldn't be doing that alone these days. I have some buddies that I hike with and we have a grand time. Thanks so much for sharing this fabulous video!!!!!

Yo, homeslice, that's my home town! Ramapo Mountains, Oakland! It is summer, you're missing out not hiking up to Ramapo Reservation from there and take a swim! I used to love hiking up there, I miss it, but have since found bigger and better hikes up here in New Hampshire!

We were just there last Sunday! Its neat how the trail literally goes right through the castle. If the castle walls could speak, what stories would they tell?

Is Ramapo lake over in NY? Years ago I watched a show on the history channel about the haunted history of New York and they had a story about a vanishing hitchhiker named "Lavender" who was buried in the Ramapo cemetery. This was over 20 yrs ago that that show came out. They also talked about Beardslee Castle somewhere in NY.

Cliff, That darn graffiti really bothers me, to many thoughtless, brain-dead people with no regard for our history. There seems to be more than ever..(sigh). Thank goodness there are still a few educators like you around! Rik Spector

I agree, it bothers me as well. I know that Cliff say that it’s just the way it is and to look past it, but I really struggle to do that.

Another famous person to have died from gallbladder surgery was Andy Warhol, he birth name was actually Warhola. Would have loved to have seen this castle in it’s hay day. Outline of NYC was awesome perfect timing for a 9-11 vid.

If you get the chance a video on Sleepy Hollow (AKA North Tarrytown) would be fantastic! I have just been looking at some that are currently on KZread and they for the most part are REALLY BAD, not worth watching!

Do you know the date of when that home or castle was built? That's one thing that we didn't hear you say hon unless you don't know when it was built, how long it has existed there. Enjoyed the video like always !

Cut and paste from Wickapedia. The home was built by stockbroker William Porter in the 1900s. He named the property Foxcroft, as it was built on Fox Hill.[1] The property was abandoned by the 1950s. It was subsequently burned by vandals.[1]

That turtle sure had long legs when it wanted to. It reminds me of the tortoise sprinting for the finish line in the old 1935 Silly Symphonies Tortoise and the Hare.

You got my curiosity going so I looked it up and many of your observations are dead on. It had been renamed Foxcroft and then renamed Van Slyke Castle for the reasons you presented. The property was abandoned in the 1950s and of course vandals burned it as that’s what jerk-wads do. That’s why you found many of the timber’s burned.
