I saw someone who used a large bucket with lid where she’d put items of clothing in with water and soap, seal it up and place it in her foot area of passenger seat while she was driving. When she got to destination, she rinsed and hung out. The agitation and sloshing about from driving was enough to clean the clothes. She called it her on-road washing machine.

Love the simplicity of this! It allows for soaking and agitating with no effort.I carry a black 5 gallon bucket and stuff my sleeping bag in it to make use of the space during storage. The bucket helps me warm water in the sun. The same bucket could be used for laundry! I usually use a Scrubba bag (mentioned her Lady Bug Out's video as used by "Jonnie." But if I have dirty clothes and will soon be driving anyway, this "traveling washing machine" is the way to go.

Thank you for sharing your laundry suggestions. At 76, I am hopeful that young people learn from your video as it amazes me as I watch volumes of RV videos and the young people are totally unaware of how to 'hand wash' clothing. Even with limited water it is possible. Very enlightening...Thank you.

I watched it thinking 'but that's just hand washing, nothing new there??' and then it occurred to me that there must be generations (after mine!) that have grown up knowing people only using washing machines for laundry.

@@onewomanandherdog5219 I never thought of this before, but you are right! I'm 56 and know how to handwash clothing, but I'm not sure that my children (all adults now) know how to do it. I'm sure they have seen me handwash some items over the years, but since I have all boys (who learned how to wash their own clothes starting on their 8th birthday!) I bet they would never consider handwashing. It's a good skill to have. As I type this, I am remembering that my eldest son (now 33 years old) was a Boy Scout and he did learn the plunger/5gallon bucket method of washing clothes at scouts.

Another way to reduce laundry is just to air things out thoroughly. A tiny clothesline strung up outdoors while you’re relaxing with a book or working can do a lot to refresh clothes.

Yes, what starts to smell, is build up of bacteria, and the sun kills that. So it isn't your sweat that stinks, it's bacteria living on the old sweat, so just keeping yourself clean, good hygiene, will help minimize the need to wash your clothes. 😊

Some hikers use Ziplock bags as "mini washing machines". Clothes, detergent, water into the bag, swish it, drain, then rinse. There are commercial brand laundry bags (like the Scrubba) but Ziplocks work just fine for a fraction of the cost.

Unfortunately the environmental cost of using cloth diapers can be too high in a drought. Thought you might like to know about ECO NUTS / SOAP NUTS. They are actually berries that grow on a tree. They last a very very long time doing laundry. Biodegradable when they fall apart & no longer are usable. No softener or dryer sheets necessary. Hydrogen peroxide will whiten if needed. I put them in a lingerie bag that closes. Bought the wool dryer balls too. Essential oils on them smell delightful .

Thank you for taking the time to produce this video. My best hack for laundry is a large ziplock bag or dry sack Dr Bronner's. I use merino wool, bamboo or silk for my base layer all of which have odor repellant properties. Usually just airing stuff out between washing works great. I tested all my clothes hiking and the merino wool can be worn a week and still not reek. Be wear, if you pop a synthetic anything over your base layer it will get stinky fast and getting the smell out of synthetics is really hard, especially rain gear. Thank you again for the video. Safe travels.

For hand washing, I saw pet grooming rubber gloves with spongy bristles on the palms, so great as a sort of old wash board effect, between your hands, not so great for plates but good for hand washing clothes. I had to wash clothes by hand for a year and I used to wring them, then get a towel, fold it into a square on the floor, put wet clothes folded piled up neat, then a fresh towel on top, then stand on it and trample squeezing out the water. Clothes were only damp then, and dried fast

I love your Bolivia laundry footage! When I lived on and off in Mexico, I did my laundry similarly in a basin on the back balcony. It was a lot of work, but somehow it was more rewarding knowing that I did my wash as the locals did. It was a small thing that made me feel more a part of the community. Thank you for the laundry tips and tricks!

Traveling with Anidaso health for medical missions, I take a waterproof bag (think scrubba bag minus the nubbies), it cost me $6.97 on clearance. and a cotton pillowcase. After wringing my clothes, I can put them in the pillowcase and give it a whirl…like a human centrifuge. I then hang them up to dry via a pocket clothesline from REI or hang over anything…railing, chair, etc. I use a small (3.2 oz or smaller) bottle of Bronners that I found at a Marshall’s/TJ Maxx. I use the washing detergent sheets at home! Less plastic and they’re wonderful.

Mist clothes with white vinegar mixed with water 50:50 in a spray bottle and hang to dry will keep them fresh. White vinegar is an excellent anti-microbial and deodorizer. The vinegar smell disappears when dry. If you have heavy or large items, like jeans or sheets, hand wash in a bucket and take to a car wash to rinse them since it takes a lot of water. It’s cheaper than a laundromat.

Once, when one of my daughters was backpacking through Belize, she asked a resident if he knew where she could do her laundry. In John Steinbeck’s book, “Travels With Charlie”, he hung a clean, plastic garbage can on bungees in the shower. He had a pickup with a camper on, and Charlie was his standard poodle. In that hanging can, he had laundry with hot, soapy water. He stopped after a while and drained the soapy water, and put in rinse water. Maybe did two rinses? At lunch time, he hung the laundry on lines rigged in the camper. Clothes air dried to be done by supper time. You also may enjoy the whole book. A similar book is “Blue Highways” by William Least-Heat Moon. A couple of fellows who trod your path a bit ahead of you. Cheers. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

Enjoying your videos. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom. I make my own collodial silver; which makes this below, very inexpensive... Collodial silver is a natural germ & bacterial destroyer; I have a tiny vehicle diffuser than connects to my cigarette lighter outlet or my jackery & have an electric home diffuser also; using these 24/7 to kill germs in the air; which is what created odors. I add my homemade mix of various essential oils like cedarwood & tea tree oil, which kills those pesky dust mites; which is usually the cause of most allergy sinus & asthma problems. Spraying a light mist of colloidial silver; on your hair, clothing, skin & your bedding .. will also kill all bacteria and germs on you & in your bed ... the diffuser kills the bacteria in the air which is the cause of odors in our vehicles. I also add collodial silver to my upper & lower berkey compartments; which keeps my water purified & free from bacterial slime; in btwn cleanings. In 2016, I was barely walking from severe black mold poisoning ... and it was the colloidial silver that restored my health and got me out of bed & walking again. Mold & fungal issues are an rv/van hinderance. (silver is how the romans purified their drinking water 2,000 yrs ago by throwing silver coins in their pools & fountains) Sorry this is so long; but as we pay our hard earned dollars looking for others inventions; most is already with us; in our household items like silver, non-aluminum baking soda; sea salt, coconut oil, hydrogen peroxide & regular bleach. Have those handy, you can make quick toothpaste, facecream, bodysoap, deodorant, laundry soap, fabric softener, water purification & so much more. Keep your awesome videos coming. Your van is beautiful & so are you! God bless.
