Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

I loved that you were so honest about: "It is a drawback that you do need to go and find your showers/toilets!" So so many other people just brush over it like it is nothing. That has never made sense for me. Now, when you say: "There was an adjustment period" My mind went like: "Ahhaa, finally REAL information about the van life and what it is REALLY like!" "I CAN do it! I CAN adjust to the change if I want to" Thank you! This is much more important and inspirational than all the beautiful "coffee moment by the sea, life is perfect in the van" -videos. Thank you for your honesty and openness! It makes your videos pieces of gold! I will check out your other videos about nomadic life-style! Thank you so much for your great video!!! Many blessings on your path 💗💗💗
Thank you for answering the biggest questions I had about van life. After what we’ve been thru in 2020, I’m seriously considering a major life change by going on the road. In the 90s I traveled constantly as a photojournalist, then life changed and I planted roots. The song of the road still plays in my heart. It’s time I listened. Good luck and continued success in all you do! Keep creating, you have a wonderful vision.

Yep, often the toilet and shower aspects are discussed little if any. And this is probably what would steer me to a different lifestyle, at least at my age. If I was in my 20's still I might do it for a period of time as I do enjoy adventure.
I must admit when I first saw you, I was skeptical. I'm not any longer, I'm impressed by your energy and your confidence. I am aware of the artistic aura all around you and I can't say enough about how amazing what you're doing is. Be safe, be well, and be an artist.
when I was 8 nyears old, I told my mon that I wanted to be a truckdriver, when getting old. My mun said WHY?? I said, because you live inside the truck. duh! today I am 52 and I still get inspired and dream of living on the road :-) cheers!

You should follow your dream my friend. Before I discovered a way to make a living on the road, I held a job at the YMCA (maintenance) and lived in my sprinter van. "Livin in a van down by the river" heh! But anyway, one day, I stopped making excuses and just did it. Kept my eye out for the right van at the right price and jumped. Found a 2011 Mercedes sprinter van 👍!Looking back, my only regret is not doing it sooner. Oh and I learn to put money back. I'd put back all the money you can. The occasional breakdown can happen at the worse time. I didn't manage my money starting out and it almost cost me the whole set up. Transmission went out while I was between camp sites. I got lucky in the form of awesome friends but it could have been a nightmare. Now days, I can cover ANYTHING that may happen top👆 to bottom 👇and I'm able to go anyplace, anytime I wish. I keep a small dry storage locker near Cleveland for things I just can't let go. IE photo albums and other sentimental items. I don't do van life vids but, may someday. I like helping folks in person mostly, I'm a somewhat skilled van builder and have a pretty good imagination lol. If you plan on going solo, I'd get a small pet. My lil 5 lb dog name Lynard has been great and kinda makes it so I'm not technically all alone. Maybe a insecurity issue, I guess. Wish you much happiness in whatever you do. Love peace and prayers. 🤟✌️🙏

Not in my case, just go, do my business and left. I always promise myself to start working out but never happen...I must confess, I am renting a room now because of the pandemic, and the fact that my van was written off in March. Sleep in a Ford Mondeo for a month but second lockdown here in the UK make me move to a fix place for now. Looking for a new van to build. I find depressing being in a brick and mortar place.
Just wanted to give a little tip about the truck stops...if you get a professional driver or expedite rewards card, you will get a half shower credit for 14 gallons of gas or a full shower credit if your tank can hold 28 gallons. Showers are about $12.00 if you want to pay for one. Or even go to the kiosk and when a driver comes in, ask them if they will put you on as a "co-driver". It doesn't cost them anything extra, and don't worry, you don't have to share the shower with them!!! :)

Love this van, my one addition would be to put the shower tray under the floor and have it hinge it like a hatch, use a wrap around curtain that can be tucked away and a rain head fitted within the ceiling, then the shower can be in the middle floor if you needed as a back up or occasional use option when the gym is inconvenient 😁

= @@ChristianSchaffer = I recommend to get a composting style & separating toilet. . Most people only have to empty them about once every 2 to 4 weeks.. .If your still using other washrooms a lot, they probably last more then 2 months between emptying.. . A proper design does not have any smells, and they do not use any water. . There is no black water tank to empty. . You can build your own for less then 50 dollars ... Research key words - separating toilets, or Urine diverting and composting toilets.
I am inspired to fix my van just like this because i love travelling. Youre awesome and very cool. I am now your regular viewer and follower good content. 😊

It seems like you have the best of several worlds, Christian: You appear to be well grounded; you have the freedom to travel after working and saving; meaningful work (that you would do, even if it didn't pay) and demand from others who have specific types of work for you to do (something different, to help you grow and stretch you beyond your comfort level), enough money to develop the lifestyle you care about; patience to try other types of work to see if they fit you; you are articulate and seem comfortable in front of the camera; AND your sense of adventure and fearlessness is obvious. I have done whatever I could dream up, all of my life, and luckily my wife didn't complain, and helped make our life interesting and enjoyable. I say: GO FOR IT (whatever it is) YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE!!

I'm at the other end of the trail. I started out shooting in the US navy in the late 70s. When I got out, trying to make a living as a travel adventure photographer was extremely difficult. Film costs alone made it almost impossible, and unlike now, there was no easy way to display a portfolio. I'm retiring in a couple of years, have fully jumped into digital imagery, and am looking at spending some time on the road. So, making a living isn't my main focus, but how to live comfortably is. Your van is amazing, and I'm assuming amazingly expensive. Like you, I may start out in an SUV or converted minivan. Happy trails!

As an over-the-road truck driver, I can totally relate to the potty and shower situation. Most truck stop shower facilities are quite good, having undergone upgrades during the past five-six years. Showers are free with the purchase of 50-60 gallons of fuel (at a time), otherwise they run $10 - $15. Loves Travel Stops are the least expensive but Petro Travel Centers have the best shower facilities.

Then you’re screwed like me. But anytime fitness Queensland ones are open now finally! I have been dying. I stayed at hotels sometimes or used gross public bathrooms ones. I’m gonna puke if I go there again.

@@rachnamarshall3907 Here in the US, truck stops out on the main highways have clean showers. They average about $10 to $15
My only concern would be getting mail, securely, and promptly. I've gone paperless everywhere I can, but there are still a few holdouts that insist on licking a stamp.

Doc, North Dakota is the most nomad friendly state you only need to stay one night in the state. The service is called virtual mailbox and if you have magazines, Bills, etc. for a small fee they can send them to you wherever you are at.

Steve Yi - Yes that’s true but it would be a sort of anchor unless you planned on staying in one area for an extended period.

Ed Smedley It's actually not a North Dakota. It's South Dakota. But there are some other things to consider. I've heard that health insurance is expensive in SD.
Your van is light and cheery.
Both of your videos are really interesting and informative, thanks so much for sharing :)

Que astral legal!! .....boas energias e uma doçura de menina ..... gatissíma!! 😻
When you have to do legal stuff, what do you say is your address for mail or filling forms? Do you use a friend’s, po.box, on the road....

Greaaat question. One of the biggest headaches of living on the road, tbh. I use my Mom's address in Florida...which is kind of a pain because I have to pay for everything to be shipped twice and pray I intercept it in time before moving on to a new location. Amazon prime is helpful though, I can pick up packages easily that way. Also, general delivery. Great topic for a future video ✌🏼
I would love to see where you stay while living the van life. I have considered doing this but my biggest concern is where to sleep! Any tips?

Yeah that's a big one. I'll try to cover this in depth at some point. City ordinances vary, as do parking regulations. For the most part, I stick to BLM, National Forests, Campgrounds, Wal-Marts, friend's driveways, etc. I've been living in a vehicle for 21 months now and I haven't had any issues
