I think you made the right decision with the convertible dinette and deeper back seat. We also chose the U shaped dinette version so we can have upper storage cabinets all around and a bed that uses the full width of the van with one side being a little longer to accomodate my husband who is 6.5”. We use two separate down duvets, because we like different warmth levels, and because after a few months of use, we decided to make our bed more of a U shape by leaving some space between the couches open toward the feet area. This allows us to get in and out of bed easily and have a space to stand (while in bed mode) to reach into the upper cabinets. ( this configuration, however, may not work for people who like to cuttle during the night :) In the morning we stuff the duvets in sleeping bags compression sacks which makes it easy to store them (although the duvet covers get wrinkled)

That's so interesting. Love how you guys have worked out a system for 2 different types of sleepers and a good method for storing the duvets!! 😊

So excited for you both on your new adventure! I am Team Dinette, one hundred percent. Van life for me is still a couple of years into the future but I doubt I will change my mind. The upper cabinet storage that is lost with a murphy bed, bed jack, and some fixed bed layouts is a significant downside. So glad you're going with the dinette; such an open feeling. CHEERS!

I love the whole idea of a camper van, and I love some of the self built ones I’ve seen. I have a very bad back. I need a fixed bed, and a dinette and bathroom. When I’m ready for an RV l think I’ll get a good used pickup and truck camper. It checks all of my boxes accept the convenience of getting from the living part to the driver’s seat without going outside.

That sounds like a perfect solution for you and I’ve noticed that a lot of the vans in Europe block the cab so it shouldn’t be too bad.

Jen and Guy Yeah. I’ve noticed that too. Most of the van lifers on KZread are 20’s to early 30’s. They don’t mind having to unmake a dinette or some other feature and make a flat bed and then make it up with bedding and in the morning undo it all and set up the. other feature. But I’ve also noticed that when they build out their next van, they want a fixed bed and they want a bathroom of some kind. A little older and wiser. KZread only recommended your channel to me yesterday. You are closer to me in age, so I’m interested in how your build goes. I wish you all the best!

One thing we found in our first build is if one person wants to stay in bed what does the other person do when they want to get up. We ended up sitting in the front passengers seat but would prefer to have a more comfortable arrangement. Just a thought.

@@JenandGuy We're working on a split Murphy bed where the larger part can be folded up leaving a smaller section that would allow one person to stay sleeping. I'm still working out the exact dimensions of each side.

@@JenandGuy My plan is to have the Murphy slip into two parts. After finishing the walls we have 70" wall to wall. We also have windows so that allows about 3" extra on each side so if you're tall you could put your feet into that space. I'm planning on making the drivers side the large side 46" and the passengers side 24". The bigger side will fold up while the smaller section will be fixed for sleeping or to use as a second couch. We would sleep side to side but if one person wants to stay in bed or wants to ly down during the day they could use the fixed side. WE plan to make the folding side 60" front to back in the van and the fixed side would be 72". My wife sows so she will make fitted bottom sheets for each side and we'll have one large top sheet and comforter when the bed is open.

Hi from Redondo Beach! That's the same floor plan I"m doing as well (wider back bench on the u-shape dinette). My build is being done by MasterOverland and I"ll have my van in January. One recommendation is to make the back bench hinged so you can access the garage from the inside. My dinette will be similar to this: sportsmobile.com/conversion-examples/67-sprinter-van-conversion/

@@JenandGuy Also look at the step up in the dinette ... that provides additional kitchen storage (floor is hinged to access more space), as well as a bit more garage room and some additional side bench storage. The only thing you lose is space in the upper cabinets (mine will be just a bit smaller). But if you aren't doing uppers, you can gain a lot of space usage by doing a step up :-) ... kind of a hybrid of the high fixed bed and the dinette option. Can't wait to see your van project unfold! love your channel!!
