Van Beuren's Tom & Jerry - Pencil Mania (1932)
Фильм және анимация
This is NOT M-G-M's famous cat-and-mouse cartoon team, but a Mutt-and-Jeff type duo that starred in about two dozen cartoons produced by the Van Beuren studio between 1931 and 1933.

I always love how the Van Beurens and the Fleischer Brothers could play with the whole medium of animation like this, you just really don't see anything like it anymore. Sad really :(
They're just lucky neither of them drew an evil sponge!

I was thinking the same thing! I was linking a lot of this to Frankendoodle. I'm even convinced that the person Jerry drew that started causing trouble was an ancestor of Doodlebob! Haha!

The girl look like dee- dee from dexter's lab, the strong hero looks like Fred from Scooby Doo, and the Ugly evil guy looks like Waluigi from the Mario series.

Disney did sue Van Beuren, but it was not over a cat-and-mouse couple, but a male-and-female mouse couple that bore too much resemblance to Mickey and Minnie. Two of the cartoons that featured these mice, "Circus Capers" and "The Office Boy" (both 1930), are now playing on my channel.
Now I was right Tom & Jerry didn't always immediately start out as the cat & mouse duo we all know & love. 1st they were humans (1930-1938). Then the cat & mouse Funny Duo in 1942 Nearly 4 Years later...

The voice of the woman who appears at the 4 minute mark (the one that was the tomato) sounds very much like the voice of Olive Oil in the Popeye shorts. Is this a correct guess?

Jerry's use of the hybrid pencil/pen was very ingenious, turning one surreal (and metacartoonal) gag into another and another and another flawlessly, and making the whole cartoon into a rhythmic masterpiece. It's a shame that so many excellent Van Beuren cartoons only exist in collections like "Cartoons That Time Forgot Vol 9". They are an essential and vital part of the glorious age of black and white cartoons. Luckily there are lots of them and most are now here on YT.
ahh i remember watching this on a DVD when i was little. (idk but we had a dvd full of these types of cartoons) too bad cartoons back then were vile with racism and that sort of stuff.

My pleasure, glad to help. Steve Stanchfield at Thunderbean is sort of the patron saint of lost cartoons. He has some more amazing video restorations up his sleeve too. Also writes the weekly "Thunderbean Thursdays" post at Cartoon Research.

Gene Rodemich was the "Carl Stalling" of the Van Beuren studio, 'woofer', from 1930 through 1933. He had a knack for adapting popular music and mixing and arranging them with his own "cues", as did Stalling!
Thanks Jeff, - My love of these old cartoons started about twenty years ago after seeing a documentary on Max Fleischer, I loved everything about them from the music to the quirky images and bizarre ideas. I have managed to obtain several DVDs but there is not an abundance of them over here I'm afraid. I shall continue searching for more gems- thanks for your information.
These cartoons might be labeled "Dick & Larry" instead of "Tom & Jerry." The company who issued them on 8 and/or 16 mm film in the 1940s renamed the characters because of the better-known MGM cartoons.
We would watch this in the ghetto movie theater until 5 am when they kicked us out to sleep in the streets. Ah those were the good old days. Thanks FDR.

6:21 RULES OF NATURE
The most complete and very best quality DVD of Van Beuren's Tom & Jerry is available from a company called Thunderbean Animation. They have lots more of the rarest cartoon collections around.
I see Popeye, Tom and Jerry, (maybe) Betty Boop and (maybe) some Disney mixed into this. I can't say this for sure, but since this cartoon was really old, is it impossible for it to have inspired those cartoons?

is there an evil guy in this episode?
Wishing you good luck and good hunting for the cartoons you want. I did not know until now that you were writing from England. Actually, as far as finding unusual cartoons in the stores here in the US, it's much the same. Disney and Warners are about all that's generally available, though there were a couple of excellent Walter Lantz collections released several years ago.

No. In fact Disney sued Van Beuren over a cat & mouse couple appearing in some of his cartoons.
Very close! Bonnie Poe, who performed in this and other Van Beuren cartoons, was one of the early voices of Betty Boop before Fleischer settled on Mae Questel.
