Piano Tooners (1932) for Thunderbean Thursday

Here is the finished restoration of Van Beuren's 'Piano Tooners', one of three Van Beuren cartoons that we know of that the original camera negatives have survived. There may be others that we don't know about yet. This lovely element has been reserved by Sony and the Library of Congress. I thought we'd share it today since the master for the Tom and Jerry Blu-ray is going to replication tomorrow. Restortion/color grading/ cleanup by Thad Komorowski and Steve Stanchfield

Diffidently my favorite of the Van Beuren Tom & Jerry cartoons I've seen; Certainly the best looking! If you look closely on the left side of the screen at 1:19 , you can see the shadow of the ruffle baton used to keep the musicians in sync with the cartoon! A brilliant restoration as always; My compliments to the team! Edit 12/19/23: I just noticed something I hadn't before: The flapper lady at 5:56 is clearly a poor mans imitation of Betty Boop. The baby-like voice really gave it away, plus this was made at the Hight of her popularity. Don't ask me how I missed it untill now, I have no clue!

And it shows how those 16mm copies in circulation didn't do justice to the original sound OR picture quality. Makes you wonder what the rest of the Van Beuren output sounded and looked like when they were originally in theaters.

Gene Rodemich’s rendition of Doing the New Low Down is probably the most peppy this tune has been. That and the 1929 recording done by Lud Gluskin’s Orchestra

It seems he was a pretty well known bandleader in New York at the time. It also seems like jazz and dance music was his speciality. So yeah, he knew how to make music hot and peppery when the occasion required it.

I am wondering if I could ask about an old cartoon VHS I used to watch as child but I can't find it anywhere and I have been looking for years. I think it was called 'Party Laughs'. I have a still from a clip I saw it on an entirely unrelated video. Please let me know if anyone can help.

not to knock your restorations but i feel like old cartoons like this should have the dust scratches and gate weave, in other words, they look so weird when they're restored like this, the damage is just part of the aesthetic in my op.

Yes, but that's not how they were seen in theaters at all. Those damages are from age, they didnt come with the print originally, plus those types of damages can be worse in some cases like the Winkler Era Oswald's.

@@turboemerald9228 I see your point, but sometimes keeping the damages can harm some prints in some instances, there's a Oswald cartoon that suffered from determination because they just left it there.
