This was the first Van Beuren Tom & Jerry I watched in my life. All thanks to the Toon Factory DVDs I've collected.

I never knew Tom and Jerry had voices, until I watched this cartoon. Characters back then rarely revealed their voices, they only made noises like screams, grunts, groans, and etc.

The voices here were done by the pioneering black comedy team of Flournoy Miller and Aubrey Lyles. Some of their works can be found elsewhere on you tube, and they were said to be the direct inspiration for Amos & Andy. Lyles died a few months after this film in 1932 from tuberculosis, and Miller would later write for Amos & Andy.

Weird...Tom & Jerry were human...and they wern't trying to kill each other.

Isn't it wierd that Joseph Barbera who worked on Van Beuren's Tom and Jerry in the 30's later met Wiliiam Hanna, who together created an animated cat and mouse named Tom and Jerry in the 40's, to avoid confusion Van Beuren's Tom and Jerry were renamed Dick and Larry, I am dead serious.

Their real names ARE Tom and Jerry, and these guys beat out the Cat and Mouse pair by nearly a decade. However, they were renamed Dick and Larry to avoid confusion when another company bought them.

I'm not sure if the fact that this doesn't bother me means that I'm used to/ignore racism, or that I've just been educated about history enough that I'm aware of the different social conditions in which cartoons like this were made... On another note: those skeletons were pretty cool.
