VAN BATTLE! Ford E350 vs Ford Transit - Cost conscious ways to get your van life on!

Спорт

Curious how the trusty Ford Econoline stacks up against the modern Ford Transit van? After crossing several states together and riding mountain bike trails all over the South, Drew's Wolf Wagon E350 squares up against @JeffLenoskyTrailBoss's, the Trail Boss himself, Ford Transit. Both Jeff and Drew are budget-minded vanners, and found great ways to build and buy their respective vans without going into debt.
Would you rather spend under 12 grand for a stylish Econoline or over 25 grand for a more spacious and modern looking Ford Transit? Each van has it's strengths, and we point them out in this video and hope you enjoy the ride inside two road-ready Ford vans.
Thanks for watching

Personal opinion is, 10k buys a decent amount of fuel, and mods. Idk, standing upright is cool, but nothing makes me more comfortable than 10k in my pocket. Lol e350 for me, if you haven't picked up on it. I'm also a guy that enjoys customizing my vehicles, I weld, and do carpentry, basically if it can be built, I'll build it unless the cost offsets the build.

The transit is the worst on dirt/gravel roads. E350 with a loft and 4x4 conversion is what I'd take.

Also consider the Econoline is body on frame where the Transit is unibody. The Econoline has different axles and springs when you go from E150 to E350, but there isn’t much difference in a Transit between a T150 and T350.

I own both of these for my small business. $52k. 14k miles 2019 3.2l turbo diesel Transit mid high roof. $11k. 55k miles (it was ATT fleet) 5.4 CNG 2011 e350 Only used for worth though. Transit is 10x more comfortable, more visibility, better steering double the power AC. Im old school though so i love the e350. Also at $1.71! per gallon equivalent, the e350 is a money saver!! Especially these days

Let me say this. My dad owns a 2007 e350 and drives about 5-8k miles a month with it. He also tows at maximum capacity. He does an oil change every month. He has never had any major problems. The van has 600k miles. He brought it with 110k.

I love that story and that your dad is out tooling around. I bought a 2008 E 350 a couple of months ago with108k miles. I plan on driving the tires off it! It’s a passenger van, so I took out the seats and put in a cot, table, chair, luggable loo, ice chest and a cabinet. All stuff I already had from a lifetime of camping. Loaded up the dog and went for a 3 week, 3000 mile tour of the southwest. It was a lot of fun!! I even went to the Tahoe Van Expo. Hubby is totally supportive and wants to stay home tinkering in his shop. We are retired and enjoying life! PS, I got 15-16 mpg driving the speed limit.

@@nancyst.john-smith3891 you'll probably only ever need transmission swaps, and sometimes the 5.4 will spit a spark plug out, needing an experienced mech. who's "been there, done that". Mine has 230k, fresh tranny 20k ago. And one spark plug repair. A heli coil is the easy fix, evidently there is a better fix, I will ask the mechs. at my local ambo service what that is (fleet of 80 rigs) ...they've done it ALL to the e series.

I am no mechanic but this is what I have gathered from experience and research. 1. The Transit has a better design both aesthetically and as far as room is concerned. 2. The Transit is better on fuel. 3. There has been alot of complaints about the transits reliability and I have no doubts there will be more as time goes on. 4. The Transit is underpowered and does not have the same payload being a V6 engine. 5. Transits, Promasters, Sprinters seem to be a better fit for 'vanlife' due to the Cabin size, however the Econoline, Savana and Express are cheaper, more reliable and there are ways to increase cabin space. Like a popup roof or buying an ooder conversion can like a Starcraft or Express.

We Went w/ e350 model over the sprinter or transit b/c of the unibody construction vs steel beams running the length of the e350. Something to consider. We are in our mid fifties. So we have a local Emergency Service that is semi rural. They run a fleet of 80-90 vans over 2.5 counties. I know the mechanics. They HATE HATE HATE the new Promaster (front wheel drive) AND the new Transit (rear wheel dana 80). They are extremely hard to work on ...taking 5-7 times longer to swap out transmissions. The Dana 80 is hung from some silly boxed sheet metal (not full framed anymore) We live in snow country....that isn't gonna cut it 5-8 years in....it'll rust away. We have just bought the last two hightop (medium height) wheel chair vans. A 2011/2013 E-350s. . I just got back from a cross country job, six weeks ..took my XR650 and hung it off a custom rear bumper I made. I LOVE these Econolines. They are as common as pond water and you can parts ANYWHERE....and everyone our there knows how to work on them. They are the ultimate sport utility vehicle. Gonna throw an axle under the front of mine next summer.....until then...studded tires ROCK!

I have a stock E150 4.6L Chateau, I consistently average 23.1 mpg on the highway at 65-75 mph, 19 mpg city driving, I do drive somewhat for mpg so I am gentle on the right foot. I have always been amazed at the mpg this Ford van gets for its size and its wind resistance. I have had many different vans my entire life and I never had a van get this type of mileage, even in the mini van that I currently own and have had other mini vans in the past that have never been this good on th mpg. I am really liking the 750+ mile range per tank of gas this van gets on trips, wow.

I’ve had 5 vans, currently have a 1997 GMC 1500 conversion Savana that we use for an everyday driver and an adventure camper van. Love a 5.7 V-8, I added magna flow dual exhaust out the back, sure the gas mileage of average 14ish MPG could be better but truthfully the new 6’s will get better but my GMC was a paid for 10 years ago and I can buy 2 more GMC/Chevy for the cost of one transit/ pro master. On of my favorite pastimes is to ignore trends and innovate with what’s older and create value while enjoying the same experiences that others may pay triple to do……that’s just me, I dont want a white van.

About five years ago we switched our fleet over from E350's to Transit 350's and haven't looked back. Ours are low roof 15 passenger models that are strictly for moving bikes & people. Low roof so it's easier to load 15 bikes (or e-bikes)-oof.. on the roof and getting folks to the trailhead. And gotta have Eco-boost to haul all that weight from 2,000' in St. George, UT up to the North rim of the Grand Canyon at 9,000' - while towing a trailer full of food, camp gear and beer for a week. Needles to say we give them a proper workout. Someone should do a video showing all the different shuttle vans of Moab - there's at least 8 companies. Cheers!

I have both. One for MTB trips with my wife and kids (Transit) and the other built as a Moto van and more camping (econoline). Pros and cons of both for sure, but hard to argue with the significant initial cost of the van. 40k vs 10-15k. Can get a much bigger lift under the econoline. Ecoboost motor outperforms the 5.4l though gas mileage is laughably similar. I did passenger version for both, like the flexibility with seats, rear AC, rear 12v, windows. Great vid :)

@@TheLoamWolf If you haven't already, try a tuner on the E350 from someone like 5star tuning. You can get one with "eco" for better mileage, "performance" for giving it more balls and "tow" for better shift point when pulling a camper up a pass. It's noticeable improvement all the way around.

Jeff might be crouching rather than "standing up" at about 2:30 (while positioning himself onto the two back seats) and later (while positioning himself on the garage seat). It might be wolf, not Jeff, that states that six-foot-four can stand up in the Transit. Of course, standing upright is more of a concern for someone living full-time in a van.

really different vans for different purposes. I have had 5 ford vans, 2 dodges, 3 chevys. Prefer the Fords. Presently have a 04 E350 and a 2019 Transit medium roof 3/4 ton. The E series is more heavy duty. the transit is available with all wheel drive and a diesel option. I don't go off road, so rear wheel drive is fine. The Transit drives much nicer, more comfortable and gets 18mpg vs 11mpg. Transit is much roomier inside with 5' 10" interior height. I use the transit as a diy camper, works great. The E series is superior for hauling. Just depends on your intended use.

Dude Ford Transit is a lot nicer vechicle than the promaster (Fiat Ducato etc.) there are quite a lot of small but annoying things that are just poorly made in the Ducato. Also, imo rear wheel drive is better than front wheel drive in this type of vechicle.
