Driving a 2006 Chevy 3500 Duramax. Bought it brand new $33,000 it now has 180,000 miles. Biggest maintenance issue has been the flex plate broke Ac phase a leak TCM went out other than that. Just oil changes.. first brake pad and rotors lasted 110,000 miles. dual batteries lasted over 10 years on my second set now. It’s a beast I’ve had 4000 pound pallets in it multiple times drives absolutely with zero effort. In the late 90s it was all about the Ford, but I think the Chevy is more refined.

I own a 2012 chevy express 2500 with a 4.8 in it and it has 213,000 miles with no issues. I am an electrician and I use it 6 days a week. The thing is a tank.

@cottonballs9 I change the oil every 3,000 miles along with the air filter. I change the transmission fluid, filter and power steering fluid every 50,000. Change the brakes when needed. I get the chassis lubed every other oil change

First guy is a gm guy for sure and doesn't know what he's talking about. Ford didn't use 3 valve 5.4 with variable cam timing which he claims in the vans.

I was going to bring that up. Also if you over torque the spark plugs in the ford modular 2V motors to 22-25 ft pounds (instead of 13) they don't blow out. He said there was no fix for that. He was also off on the years on many things.

I'll add a few items. The Chevy side barn doors from the mid 2000s had issues with the hinges breaking and are very expensive to fix. The Chevys have more torque at lower RPMs than the Ford modular motors. The Fords have issues with the exhaust manifold studs breaking. They all have their different issues.

@@willall8103 If I were to choose between a Chevy Express and a Ford E Series I would buy a Chevy. (after owning an E250) A few months ago I decided it was time to buy a nicer condition van and after driving some Chevys/GMCs and some Ford Transits I bought a Transit. They are very different animals but for me it was the better choice.

I just purchased a 1999 Ford E150 conversion van with 104K miles. A missing window, one of those large custom windows on the sides of conversions, proved to be a challenge to replace but with that done, i can move on to other issues. One is a very low brake pedal. You mentioned tons of videos but I've been unable to find them. Please guide me to 'em!

This is an interesting comparison! Unfortunately I would recommend neither but if you need a van you have to choose one right. Here is my personal experience. I worked for a company that bought these things in fleets The one that I drove and maintained was a 97 with the V10. Completely rusted and fell apart to the point will one day hitting a bump the suspension actually came through the back floor. It had all kinds of electrical problems. The van had 97,000 on it and was junked. I was then given a 2007 with the 5.4 V8 that van ran great when it started constantly jump-starts having all kinds of electrical problems at 75,000 Miles I just want to blow it up. When that van was getting service which was every other week I was driving a 2009 Chevy van. That van ran like a top mechanically it was great. Now here comes the but, everything around and in the van fell apart. Half the time lights wouldn't work, climate control wouldn't work, radio wouldn't work, it was like a rattletrap riding down the street. It only had 120,000 miles on it. Whatever you do don't wash it the paint would fall right off. So if you're worried about a nice exterior you can buy a Ford with shiny paint in between all the rust or a Chevy with patches of shiny paint and then the rest being bare metal. I no longer work with the company moved on but most average van died at 80,000 to 130,000 miles whether it was a Ford or Chevy. This was a trucking company mechanics were on site for fleet maintenance and the mechanics hated them both as well. They were constantly busy keeping these things running.

I just got a 2011 Chevy Express 3500 6.0 15 passenger a few months ago, I had 330,000 miles on it, I know right, but it is a former fleet vehicle that had impeccable care minimal rust some on rockers and hood and small spots here and there, not bad for northern Indiana, which was much better than our 05 Express 1500 V6 which was almost %100 rust. All the miles on it are highway miles, all ever did was hull Amish back and forth form Elkhart area to Florida. I love it it runs like a brand new van and it was cheep enough it pay cash up front for it.

the gm 4.3 came I many models for a reason even now they still use the 4.3 281 hp with 310 tq

I have a 6.0 E350 man she’s been a champ and in my opinion easier to work on then the f-series with the dog box.

I've owned several of each and know people in repair shops who maintain even larger fleets of vans and the GM vans are far more durable as far as engines and transmissions go and since those are the two most important (and expensive) components to repair/replace, the GM's are the only way to go. Several years ago I ditched the Fords and their seemingly non-stop engine/transmission issues and have bought only GM's and never looked back. Most of the GM's have the 5.3 engine which is a good compromise between power/economy although the 6.0 is a better choice if you're towing heavy trailers regularly. The 5.3 does it but the 6.0 does it noticeably better and the mileage when you're towing is basically the same. Don't bother with the 4.8 or 4.3 if you're towing anything bigger than a small utility trailer. As far as steering/suspension goes, the older 1500 and lighter GVW 2500 GM's have rack and pinion steering which is much simpler and precise than the recirculating ball steering boxes and their linkage setup on the heavier 2500 and all 3500's. Both are better than the Ford steering setup and the older Fords still had the archaic twin I-beam front suspension that's difficult to align and eats tires and shocks while delivering a terrible ride. Newer Ford vans finally ditched that stone age setup and went to a modern front suspension which is much better.

I like the ford but I’m getting the Chevy. I do not like ford engines and that’s what I have a problem with.

Never met a mechanic in east kentucky hill country that would advise a ford over the gm..

Not much in-depth review on vans, thanks Gents. Went with a Ford E250. Maintenance record is key because your monthly deposit into repairs is more affordable than a set price each month to the dealer....CHOOSE YOUR DESTINY!

Yeah the V10 doesn't get the greatest mileage, that's true. But coming back from Utah the last trip, mine got 15 running 75. And it has a high top roof. And it will absolutely pass anything on any grade. I'm pretty ok with it.

I guess all mechanics see different things. I'm a diesel mechanic. an the difference is any diesel mechanic can work on any engine but a gas mechanic doesn't usually understand diesels. That said diesel engine is always better. Every advancement in gas engine was already used in a diesel. From roller lifters to turbos. Diesel are built to last. Now chevy is cheaper to work on by yourself. Ford is more expensive for parts. Also chevy ride is next level compared to ford.

@@godzilla6490 first off the Chevy is 3/4 ton the ford is 1/4 . That’s a huge difference if you want to tow or put any weight in the vehicle. Chevys are easy to work on. Between a 1500 and a 2500 the bigger always wins. Secondly look for rust . Both can have rust if they weren’t taken care of.

Please fact check what information you’re putting out. I’ve never seen a 3v variable timing V8 with the 3 piece spark plug in an Econoline. In addition the 4R series of transmission in the Fords are very problematic. I can’t count how many I’ve rebuilt or replaced due to blown planetary gear sets, burned out direct clutches, and failed torque converters.

On my fourth rebuilt trans in the company E250 “Super Duty”. 285,000 km /180,000 miles. Other than that, just the regular wear and tear

hard to beat late production 5.4L for smoothness, power and reliability. Always 500-700k mile e350 passanger vans available for sale. Ex fleet experience i know 200k is limit for 5.7L Chevy 6.0L good for 300-400k. GM 4L80E and Ford 4R75W are both great but the 4r75w may be more sensitive to overheating so keep it cool. Both last life of the vehicle

My faves are Chevy vans from the 90s with a V 6. Dependable, good on gas, plenty of power for passing. The small V 8 s i have owned were gas hogs ! Highway i got 18 to 20 with a V6 vs 10 to 12 or 13 with a V8. If $$$ and mpg didn't play a major role, i LOVE a 350. Unfortunately , $$$ does play a major role, especially on cross country road trips.

Should have touched on how crappy the paint of GM vans is, after some years it just flakes in patches way worse than the all the ford vans.

The Chevy Express up until 2014 half tons used to come with all-wheel drive at least some of them did. The only four-wheel drive van that Chevy made I believe.

That's funny you should mention about the week breaks I had lessed a brand new and 2001 a cutaway Chevy van and I got less than 5,000 mi and the front brakes and rotors were completely destroyed. And I wasn't beating on it I didn't have too much weight in this I work for myself. It was crazy I was astounded at the brakes could be that gone that until I saw just the size of the calipers and brakes and was like well no wonder it burned up so fast like a tiny these things are they're like Mickey mouse toys on a big cutaway van???

The Triton engine is the modular engine.

only GM made an AWD version. mine is a 5.3 1500 AWD. beast in all weather.

They never put the 3 valve triton in the Econoline. They are all 2 valve so no fear of breaking the plugs

I could not afford my dream van the Transit so I had to settle for a cheaper 2008 Chevy Express with the 6.0L. Still waiting for delivery but I am no stranger to Chevy so I hope it all works out.

Smooth suspension and tight turn and excellent braking plus OK power and fuel economy (mine is 14.7 mpg average and has the 6.0L). I made a short video about the sliding door if you want to check it out. My van was a little more banged up that I expected but the drivetrain is solid.

6.0 is GUTLESS for its time but reliable. I used to stock exhaust manifolds for those because we had a fleet of 135 g3500 Express vans as one of my customers when i sold parts to fleets/ garages. Keep away from delco junk Chinese spark plugs (or any gm branded parts) and it should be good for 3-500k miles Fleets that gor 200k vs 500k+ miles were the difference between synthetic oil vs conventional FYI

What they don't talk about are the longer vans... The Ford has a longer frame for the longer body. The Chevy's frame is the same length for both the long and the shorter versions..... Not sure what difference this makes other than turning radius....

Actually, you have that backwards. The Ford has the same wheelbase whether standard or extended length. The Chevy and GMC extends the wheelbase on the extended vans.

Really depends on the daily commute. They run "almost forever" in back country and highway driving, but soon a banging grinding expensive letdown when daily commute is inner city where it's breakfast and dinner is "1-2...Red light"....1..2...Stop sign. 1...2...Red light" It literally burns out the first gear then the entire thing is scrap. Highway driving you eventually lose OD which is no big deal you can still roll fine on 1-4th no more 5th. What I've seen with both GM and Ford. Neither takes inner city where the city put vehicle sensors under the asphalt to signal a red light as you approach (& everyday traffic jam where you are crawling at 20kph in and out of first non stop.

The gm has more horsepower and torque in the 4.8 v8 then the 5.4 v8 ford thats funny

The V6 is as soon as you put any weight in that that gas mileage I figure you had getting good mileage before all the sudden you're getting far worse mileage in a V8 would ever get. Even run on six cylinders that V8 will get better gas mileage in your 6 cylinder while running out all cylinders. You just cannot add weight to a 6 cylinder and expect it to perform. I have one of them 4.3 engines in my 1500 GMC pickup from 1994 and that thing was gutless

So econoline with a ls

In 2024. At least until September all you can find is the 4.3 l V6 and all of their 1 ton and 3/4 ton vans. And all of the Fords and Dodges come with v6s or smaller.. turbocharged four-cylinder.. anything that carries weight like a 2500/3500 cargo Van need V8 as far as I know Chevy is the only one that has a V8 into the 2020s. It's a 6.6 l. I'm about to pick up a 2023 brand new one 3500 cargo van with 6.6 and 6-speed automatic. 2924 has 8 speed transmissions.

A hello they didn’t use the 3v cam phaser motor in the vans that I know of. So your speaking of truck problems there.

Exactly. The most common E series Ford engine was the 5.4 two valve which is a very reliable and durable engine with an excellent reputation. I never heard anyone say they had cam phaser problems with their 2 valve 5.4, so you're probably right it doesn't even have that feature.

I have a 2003 Ford E150. Terribly squirrelly steering. I have replaced every front end component, also installed camber caster bushings and added a steering stabilizer. 90% better than before but still scary as he** at highway speeds. Regret buying it.

Set caster. Twin i beams like to run allot of caster. W/ 5+ degree it should give good on center feel and be stable at speed. Of course your load needs to be balanced too. Putting 500# behind rear axle, for example, can cause stability problems

Ford just lost me at OHC. I’ll take the reliability of a pushrod engine.

This guy doesn’t know much about Ford vans. Yes the 4.2 had issues its first year in 1997, but was nearly bulletproof afterwards. The 4.6 outshines all others but it’s underpowered for heavier applications.

I got free e250 that’s how I made the choice

I would never buy a Chevy van. I had one one time I do construction they’re junk every Ford E250 I’ve had his lasted anywhere between 4 to 600,000 miles.

get the Ford with the 4.6 V8, they are all two valves. all the way to 2014. he can also get the 4.6 in the e250 which is by far the perfect model. This guy has no experience with Ford Vans and I would debate him any day of the week

Guys, Ive driven both. this is my take. GM Van has a way better powertrain and that makes it come out on top. 100% . now, driving position for GM Van sucks, rear view mirrors are way too small. suspension feels a bit soft or wobbles a bit but that tranny/engine feels so good working together. now Econoline, driving position is awesome, they feel really solid , the more load you put in them the better they drive, 4.6 engine is way too under powered for this application . I'd recommend the 5.4 and even that engine feels a bit under powered. Now, the biggest issue with this van is their Transmission. It sucks ! and it only has 4 gears ! Ford, what are you doing ?! only thing holding the E250/350 back is the power train, because its even better looking than the GMC/Chevy van. NOW, I'd take any van from GM/Ford than the one from Ram. believe its the promaster ? Holy shit what a load of crap ! 🤣
