I love the idea that because you have to figure out the action, damage, delivery, and duration and what mana it will cost - it literally behooves you to write it out beforehand AS IF YOU ARE AN ACTUAL WIZARD CRAFTING SPELLS IN YOUR PERSONAL SPELL BOOK. That is so fucking cool. Not only that but it also encourages other players to SHARE SPELLS they've created with each other - you've taken the wizard mechanic of scribing new spells to be an IRL mechanic.

Command was always my favorite spell in 5e, specifically because it was a little brain teaser for players that allowed for essentially unlimited creativity. It looks like this system would basically make every spell something that you can play around with and come up with stuff that nobody else could I'm already imagining making use of a fire essence spell where it's just "What if I made this room slightly uncomfortably hot to get these people out of here lmao"

First off, great format. I've been curious for a long time about Vagabond but don't have the time to watch full livestreams. Second, that's a cool magic system. Creative and cinematic spells with a solid mechanical backbone is the perfect thing for a tactical fantasy RPG. It's also really smart to remove the need for extensive spell lists cause that's a lot of words to write. Third, the thing with ammo looks excellent, I'm eager to see more about martial. I hope you apply the same philosophy of giving characters creative expression of a skill set rather than hyper-narrow actions.

I am more excited for your game more than anything else. Watching your design streams has inspired me to create my own cottage core community building ttrpg called Evergarden. Once Vagabond comes out, I will probably drop Pf2e for it simply because I love all of your content.

This reminds me a lot of the way Mutants and Masterminds 3e handles power design. Very cool! But also slightly concerning in that it is famously kind of hard to come up with new power effects on the fly. It just gets so complicated so quickly, adding the costs and figuring out the DCs and all that. So as much as I think that the flexibility you’re presenting is a really smart choice, those signature spells are going to end up being REAL important. This seems like it might end up being the 5e replacement I’ve been hunting for. I’m curious how you’ll handle martial combat; personally I’m very tired of the NARRATIVE of weapon/unarmed combat being so much more fun than the actual MECHANICS of it.

You could add "Life" as a damage type. It heals most living creature types, but deals damage to certain creature types like undead, non-living and cursed creatures or something. Would be cool I think

I’ve been a fan of yours for some time now (maybe like 8 months) but I somehow completely managed to miss the Vagabond content until now. It’s just my luck that my favorite game design KZreadr happened to make a ‘selectable spell feature’ system in their own game system a mere month after I thought I’d had a novel idea when drafting the same in a very prospective system of my own. On one hand, I won’t be able to help feeling my system is derivative, but on the other it’s sort of reaffirming that someone I think has a really intelligent grasp of game design had a similar idea! Anyway, this all seems so sick. (I know it’s been half a year but hush lmao)

Lots of great ideas here, but I would have to see how the spells/miracles/rites can be used (any effect you want to achieve requires a corresponding essence in this system, so there would need to be enough essences to cover the effects that are desired)

Another thing you might playtest is the equal/opposite effect. For example, you get a d6 fire damage from an effect and you can spend the same amount of mana to negate d6 of fire damage with the appropriate ability.

I haven't had time to check out the long design streams so far and only watched some parts of the earliest ones; love how far this system has come since then! One potentially cool idea for a variant rule might be casters having to discover tomes or find a teacher in order to learn modifiers. So maybe a caster starts out with the ability to deliver damage via Bolt and Touch, but they have to discover a signature spell that contains Sphere in order to gain access to that method.

As someone who's always loved magic but hated the heavily restricted magic system of DnD this is absolutely perfect I have all the power to craft whatever spell I want as long as it's still within the bounds of my essences perfect balance of player agency and not letting players go way too crazy

I had a similar idea for a magic system, but instead of just basically cantrips the metamagic on leveled spells to create more interesting spells. Basically an actually cool version of 5e metamagic but still having leveled spells so that nothing is off the table by figure of not being able to be crafted by the system

@@FireallyXTheories Healing specifically could be similar to damage where you can cast in shapes/increase potency with Mana potentially also extra mana to make it only target allies you choose in said shapes but that could also just be a base thing for healing magic to do just some concepts of the top of my brain

I’d think some sort of “degrees of success” system, where more mana cost and/ or beating the resistance roll by a certain threshold is the difference between (a 5E) “charm person” vs “dominate person” type effect.

I'm very curious to see how same-cast-list (IE: Arcane/Divine) classes will work now, like Sorcerer, Mystic/Bard, and Wizard. I really liked Sorcerer having liquidized spellcasting and metamagic, but now that that's built-in, what is a sorcerer and how is it different than a wizard? Like, arcane casting before gave them similar spell lists, so what would that mean they share here or would it just be "spells" instead of prayers and rites? Very excited to see how you handle the answers down the road!

I dunno, I think the perspective of the bard as "a musician who's so good at music that they can cast magic" that everyone seems to have is just failing to grasp at the actual class's fantasy? Like, the bards of Earth weren't just musicians, they were storytellers, historians, genealogists, positions with deep ties to community and their pasts. Bards not as a master of song but as a master of stories and storytelling, and the deep occult connections that that grants them, that I think is compelling and that might warrant some magical ken and ability. I'm playing a bard in a 3.5 campaign, and they're a historian who empowers their allies through legends which rhyme with current circumstances, who gets sort of lost in those stories from time to time, and it's been a blast actually engaging with that aspect of bards and doing flavorful things with that.

I see that you pulled a Warhammer for the ranged weapons ^^ stands to reason! It's a different approach to stuff, but being very visual is, at least for me, quite easier to handle. In an old sci-fi setting, I had gone the extra mile and formed the firearms system so that calibre decided not just damage and penetration, but also range (further modified by barrel mods) and jam chance.

I will point out, it's kinda stereotypical to say that Bards are just musicians. They can embody ALL forms of performances. I was never a fan of all bards having musical instrument proficiencies, because not every bard plays music. Nor SHOULD they. A Bard character I play is all in on theatre and a little bit of swordfighting. If it were me, I'd suggest Bards choose a performing art to reflect the abilities they have.
