V8E1: Kicking Things Off in Pisgah
A new year of adventure begins! This episode kicks off in Pisgah National Forest, on the outskirts of Asheville, North Carolina. While OK4WD finishes up work on my Jeep, I do some exploring around Linville Gorge in their Alu-Cab equipped Toyota Tacoma. I visit Asheville Vehicle Outfitters, and enjoy a succulent pizza in the River Arts District. If you've never watched venture4wd before, this episode provides some introduction and backstory!

Elderly IT guy here...Might think about something I did: Moved to teaching! Local area Career and Technical H.S. hired me on the spot. I teach intro courses in networking (Cisco Networking Academy) and CompTIA A+.....Work 180 days/year and have almost three months off in the summer for .....playing. There is a shortage of instructors in many locations. Pick the location that suits you and check it out.

As soon as my youngest is in college, I will have flexibility to do a lot of things. Not sure what drove Chris in the new direction, but I bet it has a lot to do with how things change and quite frankly I don’t have the drive or desire to change with it at this point. At least with my current employer. Sometimes you do what you have to do at the moment I don’t have to do that it will be a glorious day

You are a loser ! ..... just trying to help ..😬
Please don't change your filming, smiling and speaking style when you get viral or popular. Don't be like other youtubers who get too fancy and different when they reach a lot of subscribers. You are the best. Wish you health, happiness and a lot of adventures!
“Lest it take flight” that one made me LOL. Cheers Chris!
Welcome back Chris!

I think I would have tried some rope or string and a piece of bent wire as a hook to retrieve the mic, if I had such with me.
Happy New Year Chris, glad to see your back, been having withdrawal symptoms for the last few weeks.

Oh man you had me busting up in the first minute. Life is kicking me in the butt right now. Your videos are a weekly reminder to live life at its fullest! I recently bought a Tacoma and plan to take my family out and have some fun. Thank you
"In the spirit of avoiding death, I bailed." A motto to live by.
Wow! I’m a 44 year old guy, I’ve been a merchant mariner for 12 years. I’m at my whits end. I’ve been working on my 1st gen Tacoma for the past few years getting ready to sell the house and go full time. I can’t wait! Also, I live about 40 min. From Wiseman’s view. Loved it on that road! Lot of good campsites. Liked and subscribed.
We all love what you do now Chris. Keep it up as long as you can/want.
Loved this. So many folks that travel full-time and do the RV life. We enjoy the outdoors, camping, hiking, etc. Nice to see some really nice trails and great camping. I caught a few of your very first videos and the beginning of your adventure. Now just catching this video. Missing a bunch in between I need to catch up on. I have to say....the smile on your face says it all. I believe you made the right decision for yourself at this time in your life. You are a happy camper. We are excited to take our camping adventures a step further as well. We just purchased an 80 series Toyota Land Cruiser in 2019. Had some maintenance done mainly so far. Trying to get it set up for some backroads trips. Loved the forest road track you took. Don't want to do anything crazy tuff.....but see some beautiful "off the beaten path" kinda places no matter where we are traveling. Thanks again. Keep up the good work.
BREATHTAKING BEAUTY COLORS SCENERY VIEWS VIDEO ! DEFINITELY WOULD HAVE TO WATCH LITTLE ONES THERE & YOUR PETS . LOOKS LIKE AN AWESOME PLACE TO VISIT & EXPLORE ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS ! ENJOYED !
Glad you're back. I'll be even happier when the Jeep is back in your life. lol
Saturday morning coffee and venture4wd. Great to have you back in the saddle again. Happy 2020 to you!

Your videos are infinitely more intellectually satisfying than those of van life. My proof is the the patreon...meaning, we support you and not they. I look forward to the return of your Jeep. This is a great video as always; Amy, Bella and I enjoyed it. Happy Trails!
New year, old habits = spaghetti with tomato sauce and spinach. Welcome back, Chris!
Love the Tacoma, but looking forward to the Jeep. Thanks for sharing.
Chris, you sould show the nice places in the nature, like waterfalls, creeks, views from mountain tops some seconds longer! Just a little bit longer, to give us an opportunity to enjoy these wonders. That's one of the main reasons why I go overlanding: to see and enjoy the beauties of nature. That's one of the main reasons why I watch your channel: you show me beautifull places, from which some are unreachables for me. (at least for now). Otherwise, your channel is superb, keep goin', we love you! A fan from Europe, Hungary.
OMG. You are in my next of the woods. I’ve been following you for the last two years and have watched all of your vids (most of them twice). Hope you enjoyed it here. Keep the vids coming and be safe out there on the trail!
I love that Tacoma!
Yes, let's go on an adventure. We are looking forward to another year of watching your amazing videos and, witnessing your wonderful travels.
Hi Chris , hope you enjoyed your holiday ,but now it’s time to get your nose back to the grindstone entertaining us ! Great to have you back , drive safe and mind the ditches 👍🏽
Good to see you back at it and I look forward to seeing where 2020 takes you! Happy trails!!!
Chris, like many others, I've been to all of these beautiful locations, hiked them, camped there and enjoyed the beautiful Pisgah National Forest areas! Thanks for sharing - great memories!
Great video. Really liked the testimonial for the first few minutes. Reflecting back on where this all started.
Chris, Glad to see you back in the saddle. Wishing you a great year!
Happy New Year Chris! All the best in your 2020 adventures!
Happy new year, full with new adventures. Good to have you back on KZread. Hope you had a great time with your family and enjoyed spending time with your son. Looking forward to see the jeep and the new improvements. Take care, safe trips.
Great to have you back, hope you had a great break. Looking forward to another year of your travels.
Great to have you back Chris! I’ve been with you 2.5 years. I’m so glad you’ve finally added the most basic creature comfort (heat). Keep up the great work - looking forward to seeing the new boat - I’m an inflatable convert 👍🏼👊🏻
Great to see you back on the trail. A new year of journeys around the states. Can’t wait to see where and what you have for us. Can’t believe how fast 3 years went by.
So good to have you back Chris! I love your channel and I'm looking forward to all the new adventures in 2020!
Nice to have you back Chris. 👍
I like the conversation, very informative, and the flashbacks to the rescues at those various spots.
Happy New Year Adventures, Chris. Good to see you back on the road.Have a great 2020.
Happy New Year Chris. As always, enjoyed your inspired exploring video content and I have added some new waypoints in my GPS to explore Asheville on my next trip down that way. Following you for the past couple of years and supporting on Patreon has inspired me to outfit my Subaru Outback for exploring. Although I don’t live out of my Subaru, my job takes me all over the eastern half of the US and Canada so rather than taking airplanes, I take my Outback and explore along the way. Thank you for the inspiration to explore and wishing you continued safe travels. Cheers.
Hey, discovered your travels the other day and joined up for Maine through Ontario. I have been in the Merchant Marine for nearly 50 yrs and am now 80 and retired fm professional travels. I really miss the adventures. I have visited a number of the NE places by sea that you saw by land. I am kind of a boat guy but 4x4 camper also looks interesting. Keep up the good works. Courtenay Barber
Nice that you are back. See the truck,Oh he did trade. That was very beautiful country you was in. Tks for the ride.
That's a funny looking Jeep 😂
Great episode. As always enjoyable and peaceful.

I take offense at you comparing that 'Toy' to a Taco....carry on...Taco out.
Good VLOG Chris…30-35 years back I spent a lot of my free time up there in the Pisgah area and all along the Blue Ridge Pkwy up into Virginia. Did some "wheeling"…along with lotsa of camping; and I was involved in Volunteer Ground Search & Rescue (in my spare time)…so there was lotsa training trips into the wild as well as a multitude of actual real-world searches and vertical rescue of climbers who had fallen, etc. Watching this video and seeing all the rhododendron bushes along your hiking trails, brought a flood of memories for which I've just gotta say "thanks"!!
Welcome back, missed you :). Happy, safe new year to you and your family.
Going back and watching your older video. The Toyota truck through me off a bit until you explained that your Jeep was getting some upgrades and some much needed TLC for a dealer. This channel could be helpful for a lot of travels. As a retired webmaster and designer I know all about burn out! I happy to see that you found something you like.
Digging this! Very Cool and good work. Thank you for doing all of this.
Nice, did not expect this video, have been catching up on old ones I haven't seen, BONUS!
I'm glad I watched the whole video before spouting off about how your truck is not a Jeep. Better to keep my mouth closed and let people think I don't know what I'm talking about than to open it and remove all doubt. Interesting lifestyle.
Happy New Year! Great episode, thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. I watch all your vids and rarely comment but just wanted to take a moment to thank you for the always interesting angles and perspectives you find. I know it takes work and thought to come up with all the great shots you capture for us, and your cinematography is one of my biggest inspirations...alas, I’m a long ways from producing content that is anywhere near as visually compelling as yours. Thank you for maintaining your high standards week after week, these videos are truly a pleasure to watch.
Ohhh yeah venturing4wd once again. I stumbled upon your channel about halfway through season 1 and have been enjoying ever since. Safe travels in 2020, can't wait to share in the adventure.
Happy 2020 Chris! Welcome back! Wish your ' Rubicon' is back soon !
Great video Chris... Thank you.
Happy New Year! Glad to have you back.
Enjoyed this first episode... Excited for all of your new content for 2020...
Hey Chris thank you for the excellent content! Best wishes.
When you were hiking down to the falls, I could smell that path.
Happy New Year! Just watched with my 11 year old daughter and got inspired to plan our next trip. Thanks from Sacramento and look forward to seeing your “out west” adventures.
Happy new year Chris! Great video and I’m looking fwd to following the new adventures in this new season. Cheers from Austin, TX.
Ah Chris great to see you back at it. Hope you had a great Holiday season and the New Year came in well for you. I look forward to where the road will lead this season with you as our humble guide. Perhaps North and South Dakota can make it into your itinerary. There are some beautiful parks up there awaiting your visit.
Only time I have been in Pisgah was mountain phase of Army Ranger School. A grueling "adventure" is an understatement.

I have a dear friend, known him since he was 3. He's now 45. He went to West Point . He did ranger training in north Georgia. You are probably familiar with that post.
The Webasto will keep you cozy for a long time. I had one (diesel version) in my first car, salvaged from a totaled semi truck - well, mostly because my parents wouldn't allow girlfriends to stay over night - don't ask :-) This was 35+ years ago and the Webasto heaters worked great back then - I imagine they're still top of the line. Today I have a similar appliance from Propex (gas heater) in my offroad trailer. Advantage of both is that it's a ducted furnace type system so you don't introduce moisture like you do with a catalytic heater. If you have a propane tank onboard, the propex sips gas (I went to Yellowstone this fall and we heated the trailer every night for 2 weeks to a cozy 68 degrees - we used half a gallon of propane. Of course it wasn't freezing yet, but in low 40ies - still very efficient). Nothing says comfort more than a thermostat in your camper or other vehicle that guarantees you a cozy night. Of course those things come with a little noise but I'll take that any day over icicles from the ceiling and a cranky wife. BTW: good call on the microphone. Sure those things aren't exactly cheap, but also not worth risking serious injury over.
Good to have you back Chris! I’m sure 2020 will be another awesome year for adventure!
Good to see you back. Can’t wait to get another year started. Your friend in Pennsylvania.
👏👏👏👏he’s back!! great to see you again!!
Glad you’re back. Happy New Year. Definitely more room to move around in the back of that setup, but I am sure the Jeep is far more nimble in the places I have watched you go.
Glad to see you back on KZread. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, sir. Glad you're back and taking us along on your adventures. Looking forward to 2020 and all that you have to show us. My wife says thank you as well. Says thankful I will no longer be pouting on Saturday morning while having coffee! Guess that's just a way of saying you were missed these past few weeks.
The Toyota had lots of real estate on it -- a home away from home ! I’m looking forward to seeing the new additions on the Jeep too ! Thanks for taking us along and I hope you get more Patreons to support the journey . The Way markers are worth the money 😎
Glad to see you back! Happy new year
Glad to have you back, from Quebec.

Happy New Year - Hope to see the Jeep again soon. Meanwhile, good to hear you decided to eat healthier :D
Man, That's one sweet Taco....but It's not your Jeep. Really looking forward to the next episode and seeing all the upgrades to the Wrangler. Over the holidays I watched almost every episode to get up to speed and wow. What an amazing journey the past 3 years have been. Keep it up Chris! If you ever come back to Quebec, I'd love to meet up with you!
Happy new year Chris, good to see your back into the swing of it. All the best for the year ahead from Oz
Pay no attention to the cat taking a selfy. It was his last, but a great picture of my dogs. Love these type of adventures. Hope to see some more.
Man that’s our stomping ground my wife and I four wheel there all the time. We really enjoy your show. 😎
One of my all-time favorite movies back in the day was "Never Cry Wolf" 1983 starring Charles Martin Smith. It was a film that reached down in my soul as "Tyler" explored the frozen arctic studying wolves and their behavior patterns. Forty years later I still find myself mesmerized by the film and the solitude of exploration by the main character. When I now clicked on the recommended video for your channel, it was the first one I had ever viewed and almost immediately, I was taken back to similarities I found in "Never Cry Wolf." Your back story had me smiling and released the inhibition of freedom in myself I would have loved to imitate in my own life. Thank you for this channel and I will be looking forward to many new adventures.
Happy New Year, man!!!! Missed your videos!!!
Welcome back Chris! You’ve been missed!
Welcome back Chris😊
As a former long-time IT guy, I can relate! Great adventures! 👍👍😎 ~Maverick
