V8E7: Rendezvous in the Desert

The week commences in the desert of SoCal, off a long-forgotten track. I settle in for a couple of nights, explore my surroundings, prepare meals of varying quality, and perform some tests on my Webasto heater. Later in the week, I backtrack to Quartzsite, Arizona, where I attend the 10th Annual American Adventurist Desert Rendezvous; a family-oriented gathering for vehicle-supported adventure enthusiasts.

During my time as a Army tanker our tanks used a simular style heater. We had a couple rules when it came to using the heater 1. If we turned the heater on it stayed on for no less than 1 HR. 2. When you turn it off it stays off for at least 1 HR . 3. Avoid running it on high, don't go from high to off let it run on low 30 minutes or so first. 4. Carry a few extra parts igniter ,starter , burn cup, fuel line hose and hoes clamp etc. This may help extend the run time of your heater. Stay safe

You do love a toasted sandwich. In Australia we call them toastie sangas. I know it was probably a joke but m and ms on a sanga???? I laughed when I saw that. Still the best overlanding series on KZread.

I was going to say something about the M&Ms as well...of course, if it has been up here in Canada, they would have been Smarties. But then again, M&Ms are a copy of Smarties, which were "cloned" in the 1930s by Forrest Mars after seeing Smarties eaten by British and, I would guess Canadian troops during the Spanish Civil war. Smarties have been made in the UK since 1880's, and Canada since 1918.

@@FarrellMcGovern that's interesting, we have a smarties here in Australia and I had them where I grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand. I like them both but not on a sandwich. I'm not showing my kids this video or they may get some ideas.

@@JC-zt1zu re: not letting your kids see the M&Ms as a sandwich ingredient... VERY SMART!!!! :-) I am guessing that Smarties are available in most former Commonwealth counties. There is a candy in the US called "Smarties", but they are very different, and are what we have in Canada, but are sold under the name of Rockets. Yes, candy naming can be a confusing place....

Hey... memories....that green and white fj-55, guessing a 72' is what I learned to drive in. Dad went and sold it to a neighbors kid. I was so peeved I didn't talk to Dad for a month. Had many many great camping trips in very remote areas. Back then it was just called Camping so it cost much less than Overlanding though.

One nice thing about Jeeps is the fact that there are an infinite amount of third party add-ons available. The down side is there can be problems such as with your heater. However, I do admire your attitude and problem solving techniques when problems arise. You adapt, persevere, and overcome; with a successful solution as an end result. Great episode Chris. Glad you had a great time.

Having owned a pizza shop for 35 years. Discovered that the shredded cheese had too much surface area and dries in package. They don’t melt well at all . Used sliced motz you will see the difference. Also takes up less room , no air in sliced cheese.

That's kind of nonsense though. The reason shredded cheese often doesn't melt well is that it is often coated in corn starch to make it not stick together in the bag. Decent quality commercial cheese shouldn't have the coating and will melt fine.

the area where you camped and hiked looks like a remote area where my husband and i camped before it was called overlanding in 1995. the old roads, concrete remnants, and metal were from general patton's desert training center used around 1942. it was extensive - according to wikipedia: it stretched from the outskirts of Pomona, California eastward to within 50 miles of Phoenix, Arizona, southward to the suburbs of Yuma, Arizona and northward into the southern tip of Nevada. where we camped, the concrete slabs were from barracks.

I had a similar issue in my 2013 jku, lurching, and dash indicators. Also would get milder symptoms like just having the lights flash once or twice, speedo needle jumping, and cruise control kicking off without the lurch. I never had a rough idle though. Ended up being as simple as a bad connection at the negative battery terminal. The clamps are terrible. Anyways, just seemed worth sharing. Absolutely love your videos, I never miss one. Safe travels!

Your videos are awesome. Love the footage and your super upbeat personality! A few random questions: 1) do you have an alarm or video surveillance security system for your rig? (Fearful or anyone stealing your gear or breaking into your car when you’re out on a trail?). If so what system do you use? 2) Thanks for the great mechanical tip when car was sluggish! How did you know where to find what part to unplug? (Did they send you a photo or video?). 3) I like the black table and chair you’re using? What brand is it and where do you store it when not in use? Does it fit on the roof rack? 4) what brand roof top tent do you have? Or is this the Ursa minor? (What a dream!).
