V6E3: From Ancient Forests to Sandy Beaches

This week commences among the gigantic redwood trees of Northern California. Rainfall ensues as I make my way toward a secluded section of coast, where I experience the surf and sand, and encounter some wildlife! Thereafter, I make my way from Mendocino and wrap up the week in the mountain town of Groveland.

No music to get in the way, beautiful scenery, and just very well done. Thanks Chris and Andrew. Chris, you mean you can only open/close the pop top from the outside? We've had two VW Campmobiles and could do from inside.

I’ve camped at the same beach. Didn’t see any elk though. Fun road to get in and out. Iron Door saloon is awesome. I visited there in 1994 on my way to Yosemite. I remember some of the tables were thick slabs of redwood with a thick coat of varnish. Awesome.

You passed up my area which is along the coastal hill area south of SF. There is a state camp I would recommend named Big Basin State Park. It's beautiful, quiet, and well maintained with lots of camping options. It's located a bit north of Santa Cruz, deep in the redwoods there. From there it is about 1 hour to Santa Cruz along highway 9, which is a coastal town full of things to see and do such as surfing! Classic California beaches and surfing! Anyway, maybe next time! Yosemite is awesome and looking forward to seeing some video of that next week. The park is closed due to the giov't shutdown, but it may be open now that they've opened up for biz again as of last Friday. If hwy 120 in Yosemite (Tioga Rd) is open (typically closed during winter), you can drive through Yosemite's high country (Tuolumne Meadows) and down hwy 395. If you do end up on hwy 395, stop at Lee Vining at/and Mono Lake. Also about 1 hour north of Mono Lake, and before the town of Bridgeport, off hwy 395, is Bodie State Historic Park, which is an old gold mining ghost town. Lots to see and camping along that 395 route, all the way to June Lake and beyond to Death Valley! Good Luck!

Really great shots in the Red Woods man, very nice. And I'm again going to recommend Arizona. Yeah, it's going to be nothing but low altitude desert now, but it's pretty. And there is lots of space and its low on the dirtbags. Look into Alamo Lake, you can get to a comfortable 2000 feet. There are some interesting places around there and mines to explore too. Look at a USGS and you'll find some things. A few hints are: Maggie, Six-Mile, Swansea and McGuffie.

Lots of free camping in those hills. Look around in the Hwy 101,25,and 198 valleys. Weeks of exploring if you’re so inclined. You could head back over to Hwy 1 as well, over and through the Ventana Region. Should put you around Big Sur. Enjoy the videos and hope to see you out there.

Have you ever looked into a DVR system for your Jeep? Pros: 1) Record what happens to and around your Jeep when you are out exploring, 2) Automatic video of where you've been if you want to add it into your weekly videos. Cons: 1) Cost Money, 2) Takes power (amp hours). I record video out the front and back of my vehicle the whole time I am driving...backwards is fun to watch (suggest you try it...with the beautiful scenery that you drive through, be beautiful also).
