V6E4: Rough Terrain and the Grand Plan

It starts in Yosemite National Park, where I set forth on a strenuous, yet beautiful hike to the Upper Falls. Followed by a visit to Sportsmobile West, where we get a tour of some extremely capable four-wheel drive camper vans. The desert is calling as I venture toward Barstow, California, and explore the surrounding wilderness. There, I evaluate the Jeep and consider my extended travel plans!

Pump up your outlook on life. Enjoy everyday. Jeeps can go almost anywhere. They are not built to last. I have a Tundra Pro. It can do almost anything you do with the Jeep. Less problems.

Rodent tip, prop your hood when you make camp. Let it get cold. They only love engine compartments because its warm. While grabbing and shaking stuff do your control arms, tie rod, and drag link. Its all diy, just time consuming and most special tools you can borrow from the major auto parts stores. If you are still in that area check out excelsior mine road, not too rough, seldom traveled and neat ghost towns. You are always a state away by the time i cimment anyways lol. If you end up wherever im at i also volunteer my time tools and hands.

One bottle of Trader Joe’s peppermint extract in a squirt bottle full of water - shake it well and spray the entire bottle in the engine compartment and under the engine and the mice will leave you alone. Repeat as necessary if you are driving in water a lot.

For the mice--put some moth balls throughout the engine bay. This deters mice and squirrels from munching anything in the engine bay. No animals can stand the smell of the moth balls.

It seems tempting to think ' the grass is greener' regarding switching to an earthroamer or sports mobile or toyota something or other,,,but in all seriousness you do have the best option in my opinion, dimensions of Jeep, ease in which to set up camp, compactness, capability/ mobility, etc..a proven chassis and you are familiar with it,,just add that needed recovery gear and you are golden..

I remember camping in the White Mountains of NE Arizona some years ago. I spent 5 days in one camp waiting out some bad weather. When I packed up and fired up my Nissan Frontier, the engine sounded horrible. I popped open the hood and discovered that mice had chewed through two of my spark plug wires. My only option was to head the 30 miles back to Springerville running on 4 cylinders instead of six. On several of the steeper hills on the highway, I had to shift down into low range to make the climb. To add insult to injury, the auto parts store charged me $150 for a new set of plug wires! Hope your battery wires were a lot cheaper. BTW, you're having great adventures.

Oh man, the balloons. You know those fun little parties people have, having such a blast letting their silver shinny balloons go into the air... Guess where they always wind up! Yep, the forest. I can't count how many times im in the middle of nowhere hiking, no trails straight bushwacking, and come across those balloons. If you all see people letting the balloons go, remind them they are littering the forest for some stupid photo op. Maybe they don't teach it anymore, but "what goes up must come down".

@@takayama1638 .. Works yes! Rodents hate peppermint. Sticky mess, possibly. Actually, I think grinding them into a powder and melting into some light oil like 3 in 1 oil and dabbing it on various places around the engine bay would serve reasonable expected results without worry of a sticky mess. Or do the same thing with straight peppermint oil, dabbed or spritzed here and there would do the same thing.
