V6E12: There's Something About Big Bend
This week kicks off with a day-trip to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, where I explore New Mexico's stunning subterranean landscape. Then, I venture south into Texas to experience Big Bend Ranch State Park, both by Jeep and on foot. After experimenting with various foods at camp, I make my way Terlingua for a proper burrito.

Yes, there is something special about BB. There is a quiet elegant beauty about it. It feels special and you don't know why. It's different from the enchanting feeling of the NM desert. Big Bend has then zen like peaceful energy. Thanks for sharing your adventures!
Watched this video again... Liked it even more the second time.. Simple pasta.. Garlic powder Garlic salt Parsley chopped Olive oil Butter.. All to taste. Throw in grilled chicken or steak or not. Hope this might help with an easy meal Chris.
GORGEOUS SCENERY COLORS VIEWS VIDEO ! LOVED THE MULES & LONG HORN CATTLE TOO ! GLAD YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR THE WATER . BEAUTIFUL PLACES TO VISIT ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS ! ENJOYED !
Nothing like enjoying a warm sunny Sunday morning sitting in my Jeep enjoying the river and watching your video. Thanks Chris!
Just got back from Big Bend Ranch State Park last week! Stayed at the Rincon 2 campsite because of this video. Made it there in a stock 2012 forester on falken wildpeaks!
My wife and I just returned from Big Bend National Park and primitive camped. We even ran our Jeep through Black Gap Trail. Very warm and dry, but an experience that should be on an adventurists bucket list for sure. Great video.
You missed one of the prettiest sites in W. Texas, McKittrick canyon! It is near Guadalupe Peak that you videoed as you were coming into Texas. Thanks for visiting our great state. Kick back ans stay awhile and you come back now, ya hear!
Good job Chris, thanks for transporting me from Morgantown, Pennsylvania to Texas. Love your posts. Thank you
I’ve been going back watching all your old videos while waiting for this one to come out. Keep up the great work, Chris!
Your videos get better every week Chris. Your videos have become my Friday night routine. Enjoy all that beauty!
Chris, I'm late to the party but was immediately hooked on your channel. Binging to catch up. Much respect for having the stones to follow your passion and live life on your own terms. Living vicariously brother!
The Road to Nowhere in Big Bend RSP is on my bucket list for sure. Great video!
Very well done! I like your style of presentation and your videography. Safe and happy travels!
Absolutely awesome content.... Sir, y’all awesome Thank you for sharing your videos
Beautiful scenery, looked like some fun hikes as well, that burrito looked awesome! I enjoy your vids and look forward to watching them. Thank you for the relaxing entertainment!
I love your video's Chris. The amount of work you do to properly capture and present your journey is really stunning. The solo travel, in the manner you have chosen, has a very strong appeal. I look forward to walking in your footsteps.
Another relaxing and inspirational video. I’ll be taking my Jeep out very soon for some trail riding and exploring, until then you got me covered!
Your videos make me relaxed and like I’m there with you, Great work!
I discovered your channel recently and have been binge watching and really appreciating your outlook and insights! I'm not sure what I'm going to do now that I'm up to date and have to wait another week for a new episode... Keep up the great work sir!
Canyon wrens galore! Every time you hiked into the canyons, those descending bird calls were canyon wrens! Great episode!
New subscriber. Great production values. Very Very professional. I used to hike over rugged terrain, but at 73 knees a bit shot so I'm joyful to live a bit vicariously through your videos. Thanks.
One of the most likable Jeepers on KZread, no doubt. I just took mine out to Big Bend during spring break (had a little better luck with weather) and there's so much to see and explore. A quick note, though, from this Texas History teacher: It's just called the "Rio Grande". "Rio Grande River" essentially translates to "Big River River".

Hey Chris, started watching your vids 6 weeks ago and have now finished all of them. Much admiration fo what ya do. Just started getting my 2018 jk Golden Eagle ready for over landing. Cargo steps, CVT Shasta tent, CVT awning, 67 designs options and it's just the beginning. I will be supporting you soon. I'm a 54 yr old corporate guy with a desire to explore and a fly fishing freak. I'll see ya out there some day. See ya on the move next Friday.
I like your style. Welcome to Texas
Thank you. "If a man has no destination, any road will lead him there"..
I have been to Big Bend three times and now thanks to your video, I am feeling the draw again!
Those are the lower flatirons of The Solitario Dome in the background @ 16:24. It's one of my favorite places in the Big Bend area.
I have been to big bend four or five times and to Carl’s bad caverns love them both
I definitely enjoy watching your videos and travels.. It would be nice to be able to travel this path of yours.
The warm weather is great. Nice episode
Love your videos, that cave was amazing!
Thaks for the wonderful video. I grew up in SW N.M. and have been to Carelsbad Caverns six times in my life. I have never been to Big Bend yet but its on my list. I have been all over New Mexico and there is so much to see. I have a 2007 jeep jku and it has 263,000 miles. My son and I did a loop in SW New Mexico. We hit the Gila Wilderness, Valley of Fires, Three Rivers petrogliffs White Sands NM, City of the Rocks and the Gila Cliff Dwellings. I tyr to never miss an adventure.
A really nice video, my wife and i have been to BBNP and Terligua, one of my favorite places in the world is the Starlite.
Very good video and above all good place to rest and meditate, I congratulate you I know over there I've been several times
I Love Big Bend. I just did a 40mile hike there in November(Outer Mountain Loop + South Rim). There is something really special about that place. I can't wait to get back out there.
30 sec. in and I'm amazed at the time and effort that must have taken! Keep it up!
I luv the quiet desert. I go every summer for the last 20 summers. Big Bend is special. Can't wait until I retire so I can visit it in the spring.
Beautifully shot. Great footage
Big fan of Terlingua also. Been there twice in 4 years. Tried to truck-camp outside the Marfa Lights viewing area back in November and about froze my cajones off.
Your videos are always amazing.
This video is exhausting, from the viewpoint of a solo videographer and an editor. Well done.
Wow, you do a great job, and I know all of those walk by captures are a lot of work but greatly appreciated. Beautiful footage.
This dude lives like a king.
Love Carlsbad Caverns. Safe Travels Brother and God Bless!
I like this guy’s approach on this trip. Going it solo instead of descending down on this beautiful place with an army of overlanders tearing up the countryside.
Very nice! The Jeep looks great!
100% agree on you with Big Bend. I’m 19 now and have gone every year from Dallas and it always draws me back.

@@Sabbathissaturday I actually moved out there last summer and worked in Lajitas at the general store! Hoping to move back for a few months/year and work with my friend at the High Sierra. Such an awesome place.
Awesome video! I’m definitely headed there soon! Be safe.
chris, once again great video, also perfect edition, beautiful places.I'm waiting for a video in very green closed forest and waterfalls, the dica.parabens.no is waiting for the next anxious video.
Always enjoy Chris . If you get to the Sun valley area in Idaho . Let me know I'll buy you a beer.
Chris, excellent video! Your episodes bring this calm feeling over me every time I watch them. The production value is on par with a major motion picture. The video shots also remind of an old CBS News anchor by the name of Charles Kuralt. He had a soothing similar format for his Sunday Morning show. Big Bend, Texas is beautiful. You didn't mention all the stars you could see at night. Anyway, keep up the good work. Let me know when you're in San Antonio, Texas. I'll take ya out to some good pizza. :)
Manos arriba. Two thumbs up 😀
Awesome!! Don’t forget about the Marfa Lights.. :)
Watch out for them Chupacobras. Thanks for another great video.
Another great video, thanks
Oh yeah man you know how to live life I am glad I found your channel.
Great video; those caverns reminded me of the ones in Luray, VA
nice video,,,, good use of the jeep,,,,4 wheeler and RV all in one,,,,,good job.
Glad you kept the hat on, I burn on overcast days just as easily as full sun days. I was thinking you might need that.
This year was our 7th trip to Big Bend. Great shots and footage.
Really enjoying your travel adventures, Chris!
Awesome pictures and a wonderful trip 😃👍🏻
Me and my two sons went last summer I absolutely love that area of texas
Beautiful video.
On your drive from Carlsbad to Big Bend it looked like you blew right past El Capitan which is in Guadalupe Mtn Natl Park. It is really worth a visit there are great hikes and views and the highest peak in Texas. No roads though you have to walk. Great video glad you enjoyed your visit
Look forward to this every week, love the channel. Makes my life seem depressing though.
We just got back from Big Bend National Park and spent 3 nights primitive camping in the backcountry. We drove 50+ miles on 4WD roads from east to west on the River Road in the southern part of the park. It was great scenery and fun driving. Lots of things to explore - old mines, old ranches, hiking. You can camp for up to 14 days by getting a $12 backcountry permit, no other fees. Sites are assigned when you get your permit at the backcountry office at the Ranger Station.
Nice ,I love iT Evert time I Watch a video from you .👌
Beautiful Scenery. NW and Texas
Great video. I live in El Paso, so Big Bend is not far from me. My family are just now getting into Overlanding and camping. You've earned a new subscriber.
Also, since you have a boat, consider a “boomerang” trip into Santa Elena Canyon. Paddle upriver about 5 miles, check out Fern Canyon on the Mexican side, and then return back to the mouth. It’s an awesome place. As long as the flow is not too high, it’s an easy paddle up stream. No rapids to speak of.
I would watch out for the mountain lions and/or bears!
Awesome episode Chris!
I was at Big Bend NP at the same time! It did get very hot in some of the canyons.
Amazing!! We were just at Big Bend and our perspective was completely different 😜 Nice meeting you at the campsite the other day!!
Big Bend is my happy place. The title of your video sums it up, There's Something about it....it's hard to pin down, but it calls to you.
Very well shot and relaxing video mate. Even the style of the shoot makes me feel as though I was winding down for the weekend's adventure! Good work sir
Great video 👍🏼
Awesome episode as always
hey - V4. another good show. thanks.
Loved your video. You do a great job editing them. I have not been to Big Bend, Texas but I need to go there since I live here in Texas. This is a good time of the year to go because it sure would be hot during the summer. The shots of the rams coming out of the cave were very interesting. You didn't let us know what the story was with the rider less horses. So how many miles do you have on your Jeep now 130,000? What is your long term plan for your next vehicle? Thanks for taking us with you
Great video
Years ago I’d planed a trip to the Big Bend region. Plans changed in route, wound up in Palo Duro Canyon, Las Vegas NM, Santa Fe NM, and a night at Earth Ship (100% off grid housing) north of Taos NM. 2000 miles of unplanned traveling in ten days before heading back to Dallas where I’d lived at the time. I love traveling.
Back in 1979, I was on a work assignment at Hume Lake Christian Camps east of Fresno. A certain Dick Shontz, an electrician from San Jose, I believe, brought his family up for a work-vacation stay. Wonderful people. Any connection?
Tacos, burritos, enchiladas are simple and can be made at camp if you’re tired of the same stuff. Great video as always.
I enjoy my Saturday morning entertainment with coffee watching your progress Chris. What's the flags/bunting in your tent and often see it in some of the places you visit - just decoration?
Campsite 1 - My buddies and I stayed there a year ago on our bikepacking trip. We left the Jeep in Terlingua and rode up there.
You seem to be heading Eastbound. Think about Tray Mountain in North East Georgia on your way back. Great hiking, photo worthy waterfalls and a good time of year. I'll meet ya up there ;)
While in the neighborhood catch the Christmas mountains 4x4 trail if you can. Heck of a view at the end. Enjoy. Added on edit. There is also a nice slot canyon just east of presidio on river road.
I like the camp in the rocks at the end. Did you ever see who was riding the horse?
Whats up Chris, that was an awesome trip through Big Bend Ranch
those cavers were awesome
I love the video, but I was hoping that you showed your viewers the amazing Guadalupe Mountains National Park. You drove through it in your video. It is not to be missed. The highest peaks in Texas are there, and it is a wilderness park, meaning that it has minimal intrusion by humans. I have been just about everywhere out west, and I put the Chihuahuan Desert portion of the United States (and northern Mexico)to be one of,if not the most, spectacular region on the continent.
Awesome work. Keep it up. My dad and myself are heading that way to Big Bend soon. But were going through Balmora to Ft Davis and going towards that direction. He will be on his Ural motorcycle and i will be on my Harley Davidson. With a chase truck with my brother in law.

IMO the drive between Ft.Davis and Alpine is probably the most beautiful stretch of road in Texas. If you like that kinda terrain.
I can't wait to check it out
Yo heading north central west Colorado, Grand Teton, the mighty Yellowstone? Keep up the great work 🤙
At 23:20, you summed up Big Bend really well. It’s a magical place indeed, and it’s hard to explain to others how cool it really is. If you should come through San Antonio, hit me up and I’ll treat you to a meal and a beer.
Quite well done, very creative. Pleased to meet you, I just subscribed!
Big Bend looks like a good Adventure Trip
hey Chris, have you considered setting up an Amazon store? It would be an easy way for people to find the stuff you use that has worked well in a full-time travel environment, and make you a little extra money in the process without costing people anything. Things like the BihlerFlex Bungees, RAM Mounts, the much-lauded multi-purpose toilet/table, camera equipment, computer accessories/drives, and cooking equipment would all be candidates for a store. I personally plan to purchase the BihlerFlex Bungees based off of seeing them on your channel, and would gladly use a link that helped support the creation of more content if one was available.
