V-67 Class A 8.3 Cummins Diesel Oil Change How-To

Class A Oil Change How-To. I'll show you how to service a Class A diesel motorhome. From taking off the old filter to replacing and everything in-between. I use Donaldson filters and they are the best, IMO.
You'll notice I didn't change the trans filter. We travel, on average, 8,000 miles a year. I do a thorough service on the trans every 50k miles.

I have a 93 Cummins 8.3C 300HP engine and it's a real pain to add oil via the valve cover. I've always noticed the lower spout right below the compressor fan belt, but just wasn't 100% that was for oil. Looks like that's the opening you used to refill the oil, so that will make my life a lot easier using that now.

Getting ready to hit the road this summer in our converted school bus with a Cummins 8.3. I'm getting ready to change all the filters and fluids later this spring. My wife was shocked at the cost of filters. Lol. Bus/Coach maintenance isn't cheap, but cheaper than repairs from neglect. Lol.

I've been using Donaldson filters from Amazon they're very reasonable and the fuel filter eliminates the clear section which likes to leak !! Also check and see if you have a small filter by the injector pump !!

Fumoto oil change valves instead of a bolt in the bottom of the oil pan. Used on heavy equipment for many years and I put them on all my passenger vehicles- way cleaner to drain and you have a quick and easy shut off if you need it. Not expensive. Good for you and thanks for posting. Love your massive black toolbox for the road!

Oil filter leaked last time - possible reason. I always wipe the sealing surface for the oil filter on the engine block before installing the new one. The old oil tends to get on the sealing surface and is contaminated with small crud. That will stop you from getting a great seal.

Highly recommend when you fill the fuel filter never dump the fuel down the center put your finger over it and block that and dump it down the side because that’s the direction the fuels gonna go in and if there’s any debris some you may not see too small to see it’s got a try to go through the filter first or if you dump it down the middle straight to the pump Biden it’s not good it’s a six and a row jim again

Check your particular engines oil capacity before doing this. My cummins ism11 takes close to 40 quarts or 9 gallons. That 5 gal drain pan without a shut off style drain valve would be a big mess. Also some engines have 2 oil filters, primary and bypass so some extra oil for the second filter is required. Secondly: a hand pump that fits on the 1 gal container can be useful in hard to reach filler necks . It may be slower to pump but no mess. Oil Hand pumps are found in Wally world too or any automotive supplier. Lastly: some oil filters have an inner small rubber o ring, remove the old one and replace with the one provided with the new filter. Always wipe mounting surface clean and coat the rubber o rings both inner and outer with a light coat of engine oil. Keep a rag over the top of the prefilled filter before going under and remove cover rag as you install. It keeps grit which can fall from the underside as you bumbled your way under. 1/4 turn with tool after hand tight is recommended by most filter manufacturers. Run engine 5 min than stop and add to full mark. Happy motoring.
