Little tip for you next time, many truck stops offer free oil changes if you buy enough diesel through them... you just have to sign up for their loyalty program... so look into it, the catch is it has to be a diesel engine, because the mechanics they have are diesel mechanics at most locations... my grandparents used this for many many years for the oil changes on their diesel rv they had.

Right on doing everything yourself, as a diesel mechanic myself I can tell you, you saved some good money, I had to laugh though when you said 6 gallons, most of what I work on holds 10 gallons of oil, good job

I bought a Diesel a couple months back and I did some of the changes not all of them yet. I give you a ton of credit.

Lol me and my dad got a repo that didn’t have any service done to it for 18 years. It took a whole week to fix the air dryer! We had to take the canister off with a saw zall

Eye protection is very important when working under the vehicle or changing fluids like that.

Thanks Mike! The fiance and I are planning an RV purchase in a few years and never realized how intense maintenance can be! Guess it's just something I never gave much thought to, but definitely a necessity!

Nice work! It's always fun trying to figure out what a previous owner did (or didn't) do.

Wow! 6 gallons of oil?!!! That's massive. Yeah, my dad told me years ago to change the oil hot for that very reason. Good stuff.

That is a lot, but think, depending on mileage you may get by with doing the fluid change every 12 months, maybe a little longer. Air filter might last 2 or 3 years. Yes its a lot up front, but the cost is low over its lifetime.

OH MY! $1000 in fluids and filters. That is a lot of money for maintenance. However, you are very smart to do all of this. It is no different than spending $1000 on upkeep of a "stix and brix" and most people wouldn't think a thing about doing that because you don't normally do it all at once.

We use forums a lot and love rv Geeks! Got lots of good tips from them on switching to led lighting 😊 great job!

I'm looking forward to the video of when you put the hot rod flames down the sides....

Don't forget to lube the chassis. If it's a spartan then it probably has somewhere around 18 to 24 lube points that require a grease gun and a high performance NLGI 2 grease. Don't overfill the boots as they are about 100 bucks to replace if they rupture. 2 or 3 pumps should do it, unless it is completely dry.

Great tips for DIY and for saving money! That maintenance would have cost a fortune at an RV dealer.

Though that RV has Florida plates and probably has less need of antifreeze, looking at the coolant that you were draining out of the genset, it was no where near the proper mixture of antifreeze. There are other reasons besides cold weather to have a good antifreeze mix. In my career, antifreeze that weak in the system usually meant that there was a leak, either existing or in the past. If I were you I would keep and eye on the coolant level of your genset...

Mike, did you replace the fuel filter? since it is a diesel, many times when they sit for long periods the diesel can grow micro bacteria and plug up the fuel filter, i would highly recommend changing it and running a full tank of fuel with some sort of additive for cleaning the fuel system

on the rc sharpener what did you check cant get mine to start

To be honest, I never bought into the idea that you had to run the engine and get the car hot before changing the oil. I have 30 years of experience as a heavy duty/diesel mechanic. It was always my opinion that if you are constantly changing your oil at the proper intervals you aren't going to have much in the way of sediment in the first place. Also, for me, the pain of coming into contact with hot surfaces always overrode any minor advantage in getting EVERY last speck of dirt. I've owned and serviced my own cars for 40 years and have never had engine trouble in any car/motorcycle I have ever owned. Having said that, it is probably a good idea to do on any engine with no service history that you are servicing for the first time.

Warm is fine, hot is overkill. It takes a short period of time to do that. The time were cold oil would be more of an issue is in cold weather/cold climates.

There is no way they changed that generator oil.. That was pretty black.. Unless it was just the lighting on the camera... The only other exception I can think of is if they used that thing massive amounts since the maintenance.. And considering the shape of the rv.. I doubt they were full timers.... Hell to be that black.. I would think full timers with a LOT of boon docking

knowing they are done and done right are priceless, the rv place wouldn't have even changed the generator oil

Love these new vids, some cool advice to save money next time, Don't buy water for your batteries. Boil home tap water, let it cool then use that instead.

James distilled water is cheap to buy, your idea of boiling the water and cooling it would just kill bacteria in it, which would be useless, you need to distill it to get rid of any minerals in it.

I hope you didn't leave that valve on the oil plug screw, it's dangerous to leave it on, it could opened while driving and loose all the oil.
