UTV Overlanding Part 4 - Idaho Sawtooth Mountains || UTV Camping [Polaris General 4]

We woke up to a stunning mountian landscape and bugling elk after our third night in Idaho on our UTV Overlanding Trip with our Polaris General 4. We made a quick run into Stanley to fuel up and resupply, and then hit an amazing mountain trail, heading up to some alpine lakes at over 8,000 feet elevation.
Navigation has been a breeze so far with our Polaris Ride Command and Garmin Tread. Every day of this trip keeps getting better!

    So glad you guys got to explore Stanley, ID. You'll have to come back and explore more of the area. There is so much more. Bonazza, Custer, Sunbeam, and more.

    I liked the gate opening at the end as from following your black hills trip and growing up beef cattle farm i wanted to at least go through one myself. Silly but it was fun when i finally got to go through one of those barbed wire gates.

    That’s funny but I get it. It’s part of the iconography of the American west. While I suppose in many ways it’s more indicative of the west being tamed, certainly for a midwesterner like me, there’s a novelty about it. Land parcels are so small here, you hardly notice when you cross a boundary, but out there that often means you’ve traveled a long ways.

We definitely plan on going back and exploring more of the area! You’re fortunate to live in such a gorgeous area of the country! I wish we had mountains here in WI!

    We live very close to where you were, I was shocked you were able to travel as far as you did on Hwy 21. There is a 5 mile limit for off-road vehicles even with plates, as well as a 45mph speed limit for any highway in a UTV. Glad you made it with no tickets.

    What a beautiful place to live! That’s really interesting info and I appreciate it. When we were looking where to go we went on the Idaho Parks and Rec site as well as some other sites and read up what we could on UTV laws. Nothing there mentioned any of that so I don’t feel bad. Part of the reason we chose Idaho was the apparent ease of accessing road routes. We had originally wanted to do some overlanding in Colorado but there were so many restrictions on road routes, we really couldn’t have done a multi-day overlanding trip. We passed several troopers and deputies on the road outside Stanley and waived. All we got were waives in return. That five mile thing is dumb - nothing in Idaho is five miles away! 😆You wouldn’t be able to get anywhere. I’ve been a sworn law enforcement officer for 17 years. I do what I can to follow the law of course but states / jurisdictions have a responsibility to make it reasonable to do so which means having the information relatively easy to access. I’m not going to read the entire traffic code for each state I enter so I guess if that means I get a ticket sometime, so be it. Would have been worth it 🤷‍♂️ That said - we also got kicked out of a bar 😂 We went into a “bar” that served food and had lots of tables, with our kids for lunch - 1 in the afternoon and were told they couldn’t be in there since they were under 21. No big deal but when I told them back in WI we have our kids in bars for dinner all the time they looked at me like I was crazy 😂 Anyways thanks for the info. I’ll definitely keep it in mind for next time. We’d love to go back and visit - it’s a long drive out so probably won’t be for a few years, but honestly I don’t think I’d let that stop me either way 🙂

    @@TheNorthwoodsFamily yes I’d have to agree it seems ridiculous and we just got the 5 mile law last year. My assumption is that most LE are not concerned and don’t hassle you unless your acting out. I’m also retired LE so thanks for your service! One of my biggest reasons for moving up here we’re all the close by trail systems.

    Is the five mile thing state wide then? If it gets actively enforced that’s not going to help ATV/UTV tourism. I can see if some wouldnt want machines all over Boise but going through the National Forest? In Wisconsin, ATVs/UTVs have a BILLION dollar impact on our state economy. Aside from the heavily populated areas, most counties now have lots of road routes - we can ride from out house in SW WI 650 miles to Lake Superior on roads and trails. It’s pretty cool. Small world. Thank you too. Like you said, for most LEOs, if you don’t do something to attract our attention and you’ll be good to go!

    It was good to see that you finally let Kim drive. After she filmed you going through some water crossings, I thought wondered if you went back to get her or she had to forge by foot. Good to see that the Dewalt boxes are holding up. I bought 4 of them after I saw you first use them and they have worked out great, especially moving gear from one rig to another. Great video. I was wondering what happened after a pause but figured you were busy.

    😆 she doesn’t much care for driving next to the big drop offs! When the drone is flying she’s usually driving too though she runs it sometimes as well. The DeWalt boxes are great. Keeps the dust out during the day and the animals out at night. It’s good to be back - we just had no free time at all even to edit videos so looking forward to more adventures again.

    I very much enjoy your videos with your family. Can I ask how you where able to ride state highways in idaho. I am asking because I am planning a trip next year and could not figure out how to get into Stanley without driving on 21 or 75 state highways. Thanks,

  • @TheNorthwoodsFamily

    @TheNorthwoodsFamily

    Thanks! We didn’t realize it until after the fact, you are only allowed to travel 5 continuous miles on State Highways where speed limits are 65 or over I think? So we screwed that up. One guy messaged on here and was a real jerk about our mistake but a few locals messaged us and laughed said it was a stupid law. It’s funny because we passed plenty squads on the trip and had no idea. Regardless we always try to follow all the laws and do our research before but there’s always some risk you’ll make a mistake. A ticket honestly isn’t a big deal - we just don’t want to set a bad example or give UTVers a bad image. Family of four overlanding like we’re some outlaw bikers or something 😂 So I’d have to look at the motor vehicle use maps, I’m not sure if you can get to Stanley the way we did (legally 😬) unfortunately. That said - what I would recommend is start at Stanley and go north from there towards Salmon. Ive been told it’s more scenic, higher elevations and there’s more interconnected routes you can ride without screwing around as much on the highways. If we did the trip again I think that’s what we’d do.

    Was it legal to drive on the hwy from idaho city all the way to Stanley?

  • @TheNorthwoodsFamily

    @TheNorthwoodsFamily

    Жыл бұрын

    Pretty sure it wasn’t. Of course we didn’t realize that at the time or we wouldn’t have gone that way. We passed numerous police vehicles and were never stopped, but obviously we wouldn’t recommend that. We want to do everything we can do set a good example and follow the law but on such a big trip, there’s always the risk of making a mistake. The issue is Idaho has a law that restricts UTVs on non-fully access controlled state highways where the speed limit is 65mph or less to traveling no more than five continuous miles, and only to connect to other trails, fuel, etc. We always read up on riding laws when we are planning a trip (we simply avoid places where we can’t ride legally) but missed that one. Has we realized it we wouldn’t have made the trip up to Stanley. A couple Idaho residents messaged us and kindly pointed out our mistake - they added there are groups trying to get that law changed as it really restricts (eliminates) overland travel in some of these remote places of the state where UTVs are used the most. I believe you could have better luck if you stuck more towards Stanley / Salmon and I’ve heard the riding up towards Salmon is more scenic anyways. We’ll probably do a follow up video on this sometime.
