Wow your trailers look awesome! If you’re ever looking for a channel to sponsor… 😉 We loved Idaho! It was almost a perfect SxS overlanding destination. I say almost perfect because we found out afterwards apparently we weren’t supposed to drive for more than five miles on certain sections of highways…. And there’s just no way that could have been avoided where we were. A little confusing but no one hassled us and we had a great time. We’d love to get back there again!

Long drive to get out to location for ride, but scenry and peaceful country worth the ride. Can't wait to see part 2.

Thanks for sharing your trip guys! I've ridden Idaho years back, but on two wheels vs four. Your kids, at least on your video (lol) are soooo patient. I remember taking our one son Adam, and his sister Rachael on our Idaho trip. A lot of "five more minutes" and we'll be there moments! But once we got in the mountains, there were lots of scenic views to keep the kiddos occupied! Thanks again for sharing, great fun to ride along with your family.

Thanks Randy!!! They really are pretty good. They have their moments of course, I suppose we all do at times and we don’t use that stuff to create drama for the video 🙄 - we figure everyone has enough drama in their own lives 😆 But they are really great especially for their age. They get along great with each other, they help out and at least so far they seem to enjoy our travels.

Just subscribed, really looking forward to this!!! I have A decked out Polaris turbo xp and a 2022 Ram power wagon, next getting a topper/camper! We go to Utah 1-2 times a year for a week each plus a lot of local AZ stuff….. Just got back from Kanab and Escalante Utah….. heading back to Utah in August! Montana in September to pick up new camper topper….. I’d like to start exploring Slot Canyons….. Thank you for sharing your adventures 😊

That sounds like an awesome setup for some serious exploring. We’ve thought about getting a bigger pickup when it’s time for an upgrade and doing the topper. Might be tight with four but we can always bring a tent too. I like the mobility you still have and that you can pull a SxS without having to double trailer. Your videos were part of why we went to the black hills. We tried the camping for one night from the rzr but the air mattress popped. We stayed at nemo guest ranch for our trip. I saw your episode with the moose swimming, now it looks like I want a trip to Idaho. Great vids

LOL. Yeah... no offense to my East River friends (we used to live in Mitchell) but it can be a dull drive until you hit the Missouri River. Crossing the Missouri there at Chamberlain was always the gateway to the west for me ever since I was a kid.

What chainsaw do you have? That looked like a great trip, I've only traveled to the north part of the Grand Canyon in my side by side and camped on the top rim, we plan on making more trips like this, just subbed to your channel, keep making memories with your family.

Thanks! It was a lot of fun. The chainsaw is an Echo CS2511T. Great little saw. A little cold blooded to start when cold but overall good power and super small. I own a bunch of Stihls too but this one is nice for riding and camping. I’ve thought about getting an electric though just to be quieter on the campsites. But overall I like this Echo.

I have also wondered if this was possible in alaska, I think in a year or two I will start planning for something like a 500 mile trip also thanks for inspiring me and several others

Idaho is on my list of places to explore. Would you go back to ID or would you explore in another area of ID? Question for you: I’m looking at getting an RBO rack for extra gas cans as well as my 30” 2022 General XP 4 1000 spare tire. I believe the 2021 Generals also have 30” tires as well. RBO says 30” tires are too heavy for the expedition rack. What has been your experience with the Expedition rack? Gorgeous scenery … thanks for sharing.

We want to go back there already - I don’t want to give it all away yet, but we wound up by Stanley and we wish we had more time to explore around there. The place we finished up was incredible too. You’ll have to watch though for that sorry! 😆 We love the Expedition Rack. We have a video review on it with more details. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nWepyaqgXZyyf7w.html We were hoping to visit RBO they’re in Mountain Home, ID but we ran out of time. I’ve heard the same thing about the 30” tires. Not sure, we’ve put a 27” and 28” up there without issues. Im not sure how much more a 30” tire weighs over our 28s. I’m sure the rims matter a lot. I “adjusted” (hammered) the pins on the frame the bed hooks to down a bit to reduce the play in the bed a bit. The boxes wiggle a little even without being loaded up. I’d like to figure out how to bolt down our bed to the frame since the only time I need to raise it is for maintenance. But we’d buy the RBO rack again in a heartbeat.

Got a question for you. I basically have the 2022 version of the same thing you drive. How do you keep the mud off everything? If I drive 10 feet through several inches of mud, it throws mud all over everything in the back of my UTV. If I drive any distance at all, it also gets into the cab as well. I.e. on the seats, the ceiling, speakers, interior rear window, everything. The main reason I got this one (I had a can-am commander 2 seater) was so I could convince my wife to go along as well as take my 2 daughters which love to go. If she gets covered in mud there is no way I'm going to get her to go along. She doesn't mind getting dirty, she just doesn't want to be caked in mud. I had the windows on this spring so it wasn't a big deal, but I don't really want to put them on in the heat. Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

We don’t! Especially with how much our 4 year old loves puddles! 😆 There was hardly any mud out there, it was rocky and fairly dry and we still managed to get it dirty after a couple days. If you see some of our Black Hills videos or the recent one from Black River Falls, our machine is coated. After any kind of ride, it usually needs a wash, inside and out.

Yep! We put out five year old in a booster seat, to see better and for safety with the belts and all. Our 9 year old is super tall, and she’s able to see pretty good.

What roof rack did you go with? Did you end up bringing more gear compared to your last trip in SD?

We bought the Tusk aluminum roof and roof rack. It was the most affordable option out there. We really didn’t bring any additional gear, in fact we left a few things at home, but it made packing stuff up and accessing things much easier.

I "just" put a cutoff switch in my X3, from Amazon. It failed on my first trip and I had to bypass it.

Yes! We came through Tensleep, down through Thermopolis, went through part of the Wind River Reservation. Stunningly rugged, remote countryside. Beautiful.

Just to protect the windshield from rocks and such. We used to take it off but we added a rear window and that’s harder to pop off.

Why would you go to DMV to register your car in Idaho. I live in Idaho and visitors do not have to do that.

We were registering the UTV, not the car. The UTV needs a special plate / registration to legally drive on the street.

😆 150k on the Tundra and other than routine stuff only thing that went was a $35 sensor. The General has been pretty good to us though and we got a nice deal on it :)

I like driving but 10-13 hours in a car anywhere gets rough. But still way better than I-80 through Nebraska… or west of Salt Lake which I drove last week four times 😴

Yeah it’s the one thing I don’t like about that truck. 12-15 is common on the highway, 8-10 while towing. We took our other vehicle on two other trips this summer we didn’t have to tow/haul and it saved us hundreds of dollars each time.

Just out of curiosity, when you planned this trip did personal protection come to mind? Camping out with your family out in the open with no one else around. What would have been your plan if a grizzly bear showed up?

Oh yes, definitely a concern. I did some research on bears before we left. Surprisingly there are no grizzlies in the Sawtooths. The only grizzlies in Idaho are in the panhandle. That said there are black bears, wolves, lions - and honestly what I’m most concerned about is who knows why kind of people you may run into in the middle of nowhere. Overlanding is about self-sufficiency and protecting yourself is part of that. For this trip as well as our South Dakota trip I carried a 9mm Glock and my wife had one along too. That way if I have to hike somewhere for help she can stay at camp and we both have protection. We also brought bear spray.
