Ойын-сауық
PART I: • USS Enterprise Star Tr...
This is PART II of an in-depth retrospective of the original Constitution Class TOS USS Enterprise NCC-1701. It includes:
- Star Trek The Animated Series
- Star Trek Phase II
- Star Trek The Motion Picture
- Star Trek The Wrath of Khan
- Comparison of the original 1966 and 1979 refit design
Part III will cover the interior, origins, destruction, other appearances and stuff.
This video is possible because of the individual work of fans around the internet. I'm basically just pulling together random articles and picture collections, then packaging them in the form of a video, so thanks to all you wacko internets out there for sharing your material.

"Minor Refit" *tears entire ship apart, replaces 90% of it*
@kamipollna225
Жыл бұрын
Yes you are right they basically teared apart the whole entire ship and re-fitted that
Just a tweak on the facts, if you don't mind. Thank you for the kind words but, yes, Richard Designed the warp engines - and as the rest of the ship was detailed, it was his engine's look that drove the final detailing look of the ship - so the ship ties in with his engines, not the other way around. :-).

+Andrew Probert I just wanted to let you know I've followed your career since I was very young. I specifically found out who you were and made it a point to learn what you'd done. Your work is a big part of why I became a fan of science fiction. You're responsible for a large chunk of my childhood and my lifelong appreciation for science fiction and production design. You're nothing short of a legend and I think the genre would not quite be what it is now if not for you. So thanks for all the memories.

+Jackson Handrick Hello, Jackson - what is your question?
The refit Enterprise stands as the most beautiful and timeless starship design in all of Star Trek. It doesn't have the 60's cheesy factor or some of the over-designed/busy qualities of later entries in the franchise. Without being explicitly told, you would never know it was designed and built in the 1970's. It's perfect. I would argue that no one has had as much influence on so many beloved science fiction properties as Andy Probert.

I take exception to your use of the word "cheesy" just look over at deviantart.com and all the homages to the classic design ethic of the 1960's. Not only in the reproduction of the Enterprise but of the original designs based on that ethic. Like the Crossbow class.

This type of refit actually happens with naval ships. Like seriously, totally different ships after the exterior and infrastructure redesigns, but they're the same skeleton essentially

Came down here to post this same thing. Look at the FRAM, GUPPY, SCB Series, and a ton of other refit programs that WWII warships ended up in. Some ships were taken damn near down to the waterline and rebuilt, but to the Navy they were the same ship.

Yes, even today large ships are sown in half and entire sections from top to bottom inserted. Minor refits. That’s a thing...
The TMP era refit is the best looking ship in the whole franchise.

Mr. Junkball? You're the most scrutable man I know.
Thanks for another awesome video! I love this series so much. ❤ Two things: 1) Please never stop making these analytical Star Trek videos. They are superb. 2) NEVER STOP PLAYING BILBO BAGGINS! ❤❤❤
"The designers weren't expecting the audience to pull out calipers and scrutinize every little measurement". Damn, they didn't know us at all. As a teen, I used to study the line drawings and photos in "The Making of Star Trek" with a jeweler's loupe! My bits of 35mm film from Lincoln Enterprises were each scrutinized for hours with a 50x microscope. :)
My (late) grandfather was one of the animators on TAS (Larry Silverman). He didn't remember much of it: to him it was just another animation job. I implored him as a kid to get me something from the show. He got me a bunch of drawings and animation cels, and stressed to me that I should take care of them, as he had to sneak them out of the studio (he wasn't allowed to take them). Being, of course, a little kid, who didn't appreciate what I had, I lost them all over the years. I may still have one or two SOMEWHERE, but have no idea where they would be, or even if I DO still have them.

The budget numbers for the original Star Trek movie are deceptive. The Phase Two budget was included so it was not as expensive as it seems. It's a lot like Superman Returns' budget. It was called the most expensive feature ever made but the Superman Lives development budget was included so it really wasn't.
@Scripture-Man

Interesting, thanks! :)
You commented that the sophistication of the effects in TMP surpassed any we'd see in the next 5 Star Trek movies... So true. And, as a result, the Big E never looked better than she did in this movie. The detail is stunning, right down to seeing into the arboretum in the secondary hull through the windows. Man, what a thing...
What I love about the refit 1701 is that, even today, it looks thoroughly modern. The original ship is legendary, but I'm finding that, visually, it's finally starting to feel it's age. But her refit suffers no such problem, and I can't really imagine it ever falling out of style.
Or the neck wasn't replaced entirely but extensively remodeled like the saucer and secondary hull, it was probably shifted back a bit since they made the saucer bigger.
The Phase II Enterprise model is on display in Planet Hollywood in Florida at Disney Springs. Doesn’t matter if the saucer didn’t align considering the saucer section could detach. That’s most likely how they refit the ship, with the saucer section and the secondary hull separated. By the time we see the ship on screen the two parts had been joined together properly.
...Is the entire premise of Futurama a riff on the story Gene Roddenberry tried to get on the air three times?

"Principal Skinner, you've been referred to as 'the funny one.' Is that reputation justified?"
I loved how they updated the Enterprise for the films but explained it away as a 'refit'. There is a book which explains that the original ship had it's warp engines blown off in a Klingon battle. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.
Your videos are as fun as they are informative. As a die hard Trek fan and sci fi tech enthusiast, I thank you and urge you to keep uploading great content. It always makes my day to see a new video from you.
30 years as a Star Trek fan and I must admit I've never actually watched the first movie, it always just looked so boring. But watching this, I'm highly impressed with the model shots! They're outstanding. I love the refit design. I also LOVE the sketch at 3:06 - it reminds me of the greatest starship design ever - the Enterprise D.
It's interesting to see the triangular engineering hulls of the "phase II" concept art, and how it's been carried over to the Discovery, which is very reminiscent of these designs.

After a suspended animation accident.
I remember the animated series and as a teenager was saddened that it only lasted a year. It had potential.
I was just watching TAS this morning. Remember that one episode where Spock has a wizard fight with a magic pilgrim to save Satan from execution? No kidding, that actually happened.
I love how we finally got a time travelling Dylan Hunt with Andromeda.
Loving it man, you gave me the perfect thing to wind down. Keep it up!
What I've always wondered about refitting, in a realistic way, not just for a movie and an updated look, but how much of the ship can you replace before its not even the same ship anymore. Is the underlying structures all still the same besides the exterior differences, or is the vast majority of the ship different, and I don't mean just jumping from 60s style and TV budget to an 80s movie budget. Perhaps its similar to the parable of the wooden ship, if you replace one wooden plank on a ship, but eventually at some point you replace all the wooden planks and somebody saved all the old wooden planks and reassembled them, which ship is the namesake.
Nice. I wonder if Starfleet found it more economically viable and/or efficient to build the refit around a small bit of skeletal structure of the original hulls rather than just make a whole new one from scratch. They don't use money in the future (except for when they do) so I guess any economic reasoning is out. I guess they had to keep it as a "refit" in the narrative so that we as an audience would accept it as "The Enterprise". The refit model is my favorite model. Love the design so much.

Game Sack, well... according to beta cannon, after the Enterprise was refit, starfleet decided to continue with the then partially completed refit of the ship that was to become the Enterprise A (although beta cannon also says that the Enterprise A was a scratch built new ship that was renamed shortly before launch. Anyway, I'm getting off topic) after those/that costly refit (referring to time and material cost), starfleet decided it would be faster and easier to scrap the constitution class and build any future constitution refit class ships from the ground up.

Its 6 years ago since you posted this, but I dont care. :) You are right when you are saying that there is no money in this utopian future. But costs are existing in form of how much material you are going to need, or how much energy. Extracting ores, processing them, deliver and storage them, to then form parts out of those, etc. Also the working people need to have a living space, food, hygene, medicine, etc. Maybe they have just reused the ground structure of the ship.
your presentation is so good im surprised you dont have more subs! good vids dude
2:11 dad from nightmare on elm Street. Great video. Refit from the movies my favorite version

Gene Roddenbery seems to love the idea of suspended animation. He even made it a thing in TOS. (Khan)

Totally. He had a few plot devices he liked to reuse, like running into alien beings that viewed humanity being a “baby race.”
I think it is obviously a new ship im sure everything was simply placed in familiar places so that the crew which is very well trained does not have to retrain all over again which allows the crew to reach peak performance right away. We see this in updated vehicles all the time, keeping the same feel ,and similar appearance, while improving performance and changing aesthetics with the times.

Depends on your point of view. essentially the Enterprise refit was essentially a full on rebuild. realistically they likely pretty much tore out everything in the original frame except for the skeleton frame and rebuilt and modified as needed. essentially its still enterprise at least as far as the ships original skeleton is concerned everything else was essentially a new ship. The closest we can get to something similar would be the massive refits done to one or two of the essex class carriers and the Midway carrier as they likely required massive refits to be able to function jet aircraft and the tech to support them.
I've heard two stories about the reasons behind the Enterprise's refit. One when Paramount Pictures went to make The Motion Picture, they've asked the Smithsonian if they could have the model back. The Smithsonian said no and then Paramount went to the original model makers to come up with a new model of the Enterprise. Two Director Robert Wise who directed The Motion Picture felt the original model was not really worthy for the film.
I think the editing is cute and clever, and the jump cuts to Nimoy's "Bilbo Baggins" are clever, and remind me of the Mr. Plinkett (Red Letter Media) jump to non-sequitor(s) in his critique videos. BUT- there is a lot wrong here. 1)The "Geometric enterprise" -as it's referred to here - (the one with the somewhat triangular secondary hull) was actually designed for "Planet of the Titans" one of the movie concepts before the efforts were made for Phase II, and later the Motion picture. Good find, though, in on spotting the model(s) used both in Space Dock scenes and later Trek Work 2) Some of the who/what/where/when regarding the Phase II vs various versions of the Movie Enterprise isn't nearly as clean cut as has been outlined here. 3) Regarding Gene Roddenberry's early 70's series The first wasn't called Earth II, it was "Genesis II" then Next one (with John Saxon) was called "Planet Earth" (Earth II was a 90's show on NBC) 4) Gene Roddenberry had little to nothing to do with "Strange New World" the third attempt to use his original Genesis II/Planet Earth concept(s). This pilot was created/used by the Studio/Rights holders to leverage/reuse some of which had come before. Love the concept of these videos- but some fact checking' please!

+Chris Miles 1. The TV movie Trek productions evolved into Phase II and eventually TMP, thus the reason why the Adams/McQuarrie concepts are folded in. The information is correct. You appear to have issue with my organization rather than facts. 2. Again, the information is correct. I'm summarizing a sequence of events without belaboring a single point for 20 minutes. Since you are not providing a counter, I'm not sure what you are saying other than the presentation isn't to your satisfaction, which of course is matter of opinion instead of fact. 3. The title card on the screen clearly says "Planet Earth" as does my text overlay indicating that the previous production was called "Genesis II." 4. Yes, Roddenberry wasn't as involved with "Strange New World," but I think you're missing the point.
@cm1701a
8 жыл бұрын
+Junkball Media At 2:01 your voiceover does say "Earth II"- but I'll go with the facetious thing- as on screen - your text reads "whatever". Also Saxon wasn't in the first one. Show the other guy- Alex Cord- it would have taken, like 5 seconds, not 20 minutes But it's important to know that Roddenberry had nothing to do with Strange New World.= as a lot of what he did during that time (Questor) related directly to TNG later. And really - the Planet of the Titans was a whole other thing entirely- Star Trek made to look like Star Wars. (Star Destroyer Geometry). That would have been worth a mention- whole other vibe. Anyhow all that was folded in only in the sense that TMP had to carry some of the budget for all these past efforts Anyhow- Sorry to have gotten your irish up- this was a lot of work on your part.
6:59 - love the use of Street Fighter 2 music..especially this Blanka part.
Yay! Welcome back!
I've watched all of your Enterprise videos and a couple of things came to mind. 1) You only mention the saucer separation in the D video when it was a feature on all of them. D was just the first that could go back together without being in dry dock. 2) I had a legacy chart for the ships that would bear the name Enterprise and NX-01 was not on it. I know that it was before Star Trek Enterprise but I think you should have mentioned that as well.
Great stuff, I love the use of the old SF2 themes
Thanks Dude! Love these videos
That animated series theme song hits me like a wave of nostalgia. I'm now expecting to hear a mutual of Omaha commercial after.
yup the refit Enterprise was pretty and best looking bride in my opinion.
Definitely see lots of the new Discovery ship in some of these concept drawings.
I get more laughs from your videos than any sit com on tv... Have you made a video for the enterprise A? There's a debate that it was originally the uss Lexington, that received the same re-fit enterprise did.
Dylan Hunt... Dylan Hunt... What other Roddenberry show have I heard that name? Oh yeah... Captain Dylan Hunt of the Andromeda Ascendence. Who after spending time (or lack there of) in the accretion disk of a black hole is hauled out to find the universe in chaos. Go Kevin Sorbo.
The Trekkie in me loves these videos, but the intros are on another level
I really enjoy your videos. :)
Actually, the Discovery looking Enterprise isn't from Phase II, but it's actually from the abandoned move "Star Trek: Planet of the Titans."
Your back!!!
2:53 that would be the Planet of the Titans Enterprise, a movie that was in the works int he early-to-mid 70s, and not related to what they were doing for Phase 2.
@OpenMawProductions

+OpenMawProductions Also, on the Phase II redesign, the weapons port at the base of the neck was going to be the new phaser array, not a torpedo launcher. It became a torpedo launcher when Probert took over on TMP.
The new series titled Star Trek: Discovery. Is using the geometric phase 2 concept ship named also discovery apparently it's post TOS 5 year mission Pre TNG I can't wait to see where they take the new series !
Richard Taylor designed the entire base design parameters of the hole ship and drew the blue prints for its manufacture. Andy Probert only designed the small bits, like the Impulse engine and little blue core dome, an the officers lounge. Paul Olsen designed the interlocking Aztec Pattern and was the airbrush artist specifically hired personally by Richard Taylor, who painted the whole model in 8 months. The engineering section which it a greeny bluey grey, was painted by another model maker.
In the animated Enterprise, the starboard nacelle should be rotating clockwise ie. in opposite rotation direction of the port nacelle.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the scene from ST TMP that showed the set super structure. The scene is the one where Kirk exits the ship to intercept Spock on his Vger contact.
I like your Videos a lot more than those of more reloaded.
Hooray!

I wonder what possessed Nimoy to make that weird hippie Hobbit song, especially seeing how reluctant he was to come back for the Star Trek movies?
I 😍 the refit design
Tmp can be a little dry at times But i thought it had some of the most stunning cinematography shots ever. No short cuts were taking you can see the painstaking details in the shots. I really enjoy watching tmp i thought it was a great intro in the star trek franchise. It is an underrated film. I believe schools should show the movie for its stunning model design's. Cgi is nice but to see hand made models is spectacular.
How many gene Roddenberry characters are named dylan hunt? I wonder if they are all the same character. I am referring to the dylan hunt from the series andromeda as well as the one in... What was it? Earth 2?
Dillon Hunt you say..... Could you do a retrospective on Andromeda?
What do you think USS Enterprise NCC-1701 Kevin timeline ship toy hull font numbers are that toy so I can rename her and Iam making fanfilm and Ill make sure you get a link because since there is no USS Discvery NCC-1031 Crossfeild Class Starship.

HA! i always noticed that ship tucked in the back of the space station! iddint know it was the phase II ship!
Where do you get your music?
Among your cut ins, you did not show the arcade version of Star Trek. It was actually decent for the time
The new warp nacelles of the Enterprise refit remind me of the Klingon D7 warp nacelles.
Given that the new Warp Core is in the neck, it makes sense that the neck would be entirely new.
Where's the link to the fan film?
I would and the spaceships should be, considering the fan base size.7:14
So they painted the model a light grey for the second movie? was that the entire model or just parts of it? namely where the light reflected off of it? and this would explain the excelsiors paint job in the third movie as I always thought it looked grey, and that when they reverted its paint colors back to a TMP like paint job for the DS9 background shots with the CGI models. something it was never ment for, caused it to look much less new and advanced from it. and Andrew Probert actually showed up for the enterprise D video? wow, I wonder if Doug is gonna show up if you do one on the NX refit, or if he did already. also that makes a lot of sense that those wood panels were actually storage lockers on the D, I wonder how gene missed that as that's a rather military-esque thing to do I gotta wonder though did I point out that phase 2 bridge thing too late for you to include it in the video? or is that going in the next one, also forgive my self indugence but did you show him my modernized sketch of the refit that I've also shown to the geekology guys on twitter? or could you rather lol as I'd love to see what he thinks of my work, as its my alternative to the JJ that I started doing after seeing into darkness, as it was my okay that's enough I'm going to make my own modern with that one lol like literally I nearly said outloud in the theater my god that thing is hideous! when it poped through the clouds at the end lol IE a Connie Mark 3, with the aerodynamic touches and advances of the Miranda and the Excelsior classes it ran into in the movies now incorporated into its design while still trying to retain its overall look and soul without going into a parody of it. as it really does look like the bad days enterprise in that movie. and my thinking behind it came from seeing ST6 and seeing scotty looking at the refit design in the dining room, with me wondering back when i was a kid, okay scotty just what are you up to? a new mark 3 connie?
Dylan Hunt was reused in Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda
If I remember, those "missing color" images were decoy balloon ships.
Interesting, I'm surprised that Roddenberry convinced network execs to go with such a slightly tweaked version of Buck Rogers. Both GENESIS II and PLANET EARTH hit television only a few years after the original Buck Rogers comic strip ended so there's little chance the famous sci-fi hero would have been unknown to execs. EDIT: Wow! STRANGE NEW WORLD marks 3 times with the ever so slightly repainting of Buck Rogers. And still significantly less than a decade since the original Buck Rogers strip left newspapers

I really like the long space doc scene but after watching the extras on the DVD for it I found out that it's actually more than just showing off the new model the music that plays at that point is a love theme for the enterprise and how kirk feels. as well as a fantastic use of the model, which i have to agree with people is one of the best looks spaceships in sci-fi
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus Sure you've heard of the above logic thought problem. Your narration on the refit brought that to my mind! Thanks!

Supposedly it's the Yorktown. He mentioned it in one of his other videos how in Star Trek 4, the captain of the Yorktown was having his engineer try to make some makeshift solar sail to generate enough power to keep them alive. Well, things didn't work out, they all died and rechristened the ship as Enterprise A. I presume they removed all of the corpses first. I laughed so hard when Junk Ball Media said that it didn't work out. Classic. Surely Enterprise A is haunted with more than 450 ghosts.

+Cragnous Enterprise A? Bah! When they blew up the Enterprise in "Star Trek III," they completely fucked up the mechanical bloodline for the subsequent movies. Annoyed the crap out of me. How do you have "Star Trek" without the Enterprise? And in the end of IV when they had a spare starship kind of lying around and they slap "Enterprise" on it and now everything's all better? Talk about bullshit. Blowing up the original Enterprise was one of the worst writing mistakes I've ever seen.
at 1:20 thats a balloon to mess with the Romulans
5:40 song name?
I'm going to have that Bilbo song stuck in my head for a week. JERK!
Not sure if anyone cares but I'm pretty sure "Apple Trek" was a simpler, text based game (used a grid to represent a sector of space, ported to many home computers of the era, probably from mainstreams) and that was just the Apple II port of the Arcade "Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator"
I noticed that one of the Enterprise designs looks a lot like the USS Discovery.
It's the Trigger's broom dilemma. How many new parts can a ship have before it's no longer the same ship?
