    The Excelsior is still my favorite starship design from my favorite Star Trek film. It perfectly fits that 1980s futurism aesthetic, but doesn't look out of place next to the Enterprise-A or Enterprise-D. The perfect transition design. Probably why it was used for the Enterprise-B.

    Funny thing is that in the TNG Technical Manual, there's a section with tiny overhead & side view designs of the Constitution, Constitution Refit, Excelsior, Ambassador, & Galaxy classes...and the Enterprise-B shown there was the original Excelsior design (most likely due to the fact that the book came out before Generations).

    My take on it is, that the Enterprise and the Constitution class as a whole proved that much higher warp speeds than previously thought possible can be reached. This lead to the great experiment of the Excelsior with a more powerful warp core to push it even further. Overall it was a success even with the Excelsior class never quite making it to transwarp. As a result measurement scale of warp speeds were adjusted to the one of the TNG era and beyond.

  • @GoldenCroc

    Perhabs not the speed of the TNG ships - but the core design which was first tested on the Refit of the Enterprise and then used in the Excelsior proved, that ships could go much faster. So they then build the Ambassador class with an even bigger warp core to reach the maximum possible in speed. Then they made the core smaller and more efficient for the Galaxy and later classes. And in the 2370s a powerful warp drive would even fit into a Destroyer or Akira-class.

    I see it similar to that. "Transwarp" may not be a reference to a specific type of technology but rather a general terms for types of propulsion beyond Warp. Once the Excelsior test runs were completed, they stopped calling it Transwarp, because by then it had become the normal type of Warp.

  • @LeoH3L1
    @LeoH3L14 жыл бұрын

    "Transwarp" means several things in star trek, it can mean what the borg have, but with the excelsior it meant the ability to jump directly to any available warp speed, rather than going through them sequentially as shown previously, which obviously takes time to do, so over short trips it could make a difference. Later on in star trek going straight to a warp factor rather than 1-2-3-4-5-6 for example is shown all the time, so did it really fail, if that is what "transwarp" meant in this case?

  • @madmax2069

    @madmax2069

    4 жыл бұрын

    There was also a recalculation of what what warp speeds was. So a given warp speed in TOS was also different than the same warp speeds in TNG forward (warp 1 was always measured as the speed of light). I seen somewhere where warp 9 in TNG would be warp 18 in TOS warp scale due to how they measured warp speeds. So the transwarp for the Excelsior could very well be the warp 9 for the TNG era, or at least very close to it.

    From what I’ve read, and I wish I could remember twenty years ago lol, but the Excelsior’s warp drive was revolutionary because it was the first attempt to mate two warp drives per nacelle. It required a monumental computer and a strong core to power four warp field generators at once. I think the company/entity developing the drive was Shuvijinalis, a Vulcan conglomerate or something like that...

    I've never understood the claim, the idea, that transwarp failed with the Excelsior. The only reason the Excelsior failed to go into transwarp and catch Enterprise was because Scotty had sabotaged her. In Next Gen, the Galaxy class ships are obviously far faster than Constitution ones, and warp designations have been reconfigured so that Warp 10 is a theoretical impossibility being equivalent to infinite speed, while the original Enterprise went to much higher warp numbers on more than one occasion. Obviously, by Picard's time, warp means something different than it did in Kirk's.The only reasonable explanation is that 24th century ships use what was called transwarp in the 23rd century, but the terminology has been changed for some reason. How this relates to what the 24th century characters were calling transwarp in relation to the Borg, I don't know, but obviously the 24th century ships are using very different tech from the 23rd. It must be transwarp.

    For some reason I really love the original Star Trek III Excelsior bridge. It just looks so super 80s, with the stark white huge space, then those shiny black consoles in the back full of flashing multicolored lights. It reminds me of an old arcade or something, especially with the green lights on the bottom of the chairs and the old-school graphics on the Transwarp display. The Star Trek VI version looks more dignified and probably fits with the exterior better, but if I could step inside one of them, it'd be the older one. The Excelsior is also my favorite class of ship in Star Trek, I just love everything about the shape and colors.

    What I love is a description of the Excelsior's I read many many years ago, it was a theory as to why the Excelsiors were still so popular with Admirals and the bulk of the fleet by TNG. Due to the Transwarp Drive being designed into the ship, the hull were extremely overbuilt compared to any other ship of her era. When Transwarp failed, the Excelsior's design was still the best in the Galaxy so they went into production overbuilt design and all. I always loved that thought, explains the thick neck ;-)

    You've compiled a very effective analysis of the Excelsior from Star Trek! The design for the ship is interesting in various ways, even though it is somewhat awkward compared to other Enterprise iterations. Your background research is great, and the side by side comparisons are particularly effective, especially in the section on the recreated interiors. It is fascinating how the reconstructed set for the Voyager episode is different in so many ways, but yet still seems like the same bridge.

    I always loved the Excelsior. And I see the Sovereign as a TNG-era Excelsior, which it really is. It has similar proportions and similar positions in the timelines of their respective eras. They're both beautiful ships, long and lean, with stretched nacelles.

    I remember a negative comment from the magazine Cinefantastique who took issue with the look of Excelsior. To paraphrase; 'it looks something like a half squeezed toothpaste tube.' I laughed at that description, but reminded myself she STILL turned out sleekly beautiful. From those of us who followed Star Trek from the very beginning, there were NO other variations of Federation starship design. In TOS we seen other sister Constitution Class ships in other episodes. IN TAS there was one, the S.S. Bonaventure lost in the Delta Triangle a century and a half before Kirk and his crew voyages. We went from seeing ONLY slicked out refitted Enterprise in TMP to seeing a Oberth class-science vessel Grissom and ALL NEW heavy cruiser design Excelsior. Just as we felt back in 1982 TWOK, 1979 TMP and in the last season of TOS in 1969 none of us knew other new starship designs awaited our escapist delight...LOOK AT US NOW!
