NX 01 Enterprise Star Trek Analysis Retrospective Therapy

Ойын-сауық

This is an in-depth analysis of the NX-01 Enterprise, the starship from Star Trek Enterprise. It covers:
- The production history behind the NX-01 Enterprise
- Breakdown analysis of the early concept designs, prototypes and final model design
- Evolution and modifications to the ship's exterior and interior
- Random tid bits
This video is possible because of the individual work of fans around the internet. I'm basically just pulling together random articles and picture collections, then packaging them in the form of a video, so thanks to all you wacko internets out there for sharing your material.
Therapy is a video series that’s part review, part retrospective and most just stuff… like random background information, trivia, mistakes, observations, etc. Hope ya enjoy!

I loved Enterprise. People say it’s not different enough, but it actually is! It was a prequel, it explored the birth of the federation and alien races that were largely forgotten in later series (i.e. Andorians). It really picked up in later series and could have actually shown us the refit NX-01as well as the moment that possibly Archer, T’Pol, Shran and a Tellarite writing the Federation charter. It respects the canon and frankly, it’s better than Discovery! It had the potential to be incredible and was just picking up...

All of the above, as well as more in depth looks into the Andorian Mining Consortium. People hate on Enterprise but I loved it too. It's not the best Trek, but it did good at what it had. It also had to deal with Aliens and Technology that was reminiscent of Trek, while being vaguely new. Klingons still bug me, I wish they were shown to be a little more like TOS era. Like if they were shown as like Second class citizens in the Klingon homeworld due to weak genetics that spread to higher clans, as well as showing they were limited to like the Klingon Defence Force and kept away from major Battles. But anyway, good show, poor timing with the Network

Honestly, this is just my opinion, it didn't really feel like Star Trek. It suffered from a bad case of: "See, I'm adult, look too crew members are having sex and swearing and other crew members are just being assholes to one another, see, take me seriously! I'm adult, I'm adult!" Like it or hate it, Picard, to me, successfully does the adult Star Trek, in the same vain as DS9, only with more swearing.

I think that one of the most underrated aspects of ENT is the interior set design. Having everything connected together allowed them to create some really cool "walk and talk" shots. Also season 4 was great, and the show was just starting to hit its stride when it was cancelled.

@Jip Jackson Yeah, Enterprise still sucks. Only Season 4, after they got rid of the trash writing team did it show signs of recovering... but, by that time fans had moved on and never went back. But hey, if ointment rub downs are your thing, who am I to judge. As far as comparing flaws in TOS, everything the did had to be a practical effect or models.... now it's gotten a very nice overhaul on Amazon but that in no way compares to the budget and CGI they had available to them for Enterprise. As for current Star Trek, it suffers from the exact same thing Enterprise did.... writers who don't give a damn about Star Trek. This isn't a case of be careful of what you wish for, this is just rinse and repeat.

Enterprise was a good show in retrospect. I think what killed it wasn't entirely the prequel idea, but rather a host of issues: a bit of franchise fatigue, the fact that it wanted to mirror the Next Generation instead of trying to be a unique series, being on a failing network (UPN as a whole had low ratings) and competition (and no, not Battlestar, but Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, both of which became the first sci-fi shows to pass a Star Trek show in ratings ever. Their ratings were also much higher than BSG's). That's why when they changed up the format in the forth season, the ratings actually started to recover, but by that time Paramount was set to can UPN, and all of its content. According to an interview with the creative team, there must have been talk about a fifth season because they actually pitched the idea of the Romulan War. Its just that the CW, UPN's replacement went more Vampire stories than space opera and Sci-fi didn't pick it up.

I still blame Berman and Braga. The first two seasons aren't bad, but they keep trying to emulate TNG and pretty much ignore the whole prequel aspect. Instead, they kept bringing in new enemies and had their whole Temporal Cold War nonsense. Season 3 mixed it all up and now they were actual explorers, there's reasons for new enemies, there's a mission, and they face many moral challenges along the way. Berman and Braga by this time have given up, so we start getting better stories. Then Manny Coto made Season 4 the realization of the concept of a prequel series. Now we were getting stories that dealt with elements of TOS. Then this great man, this would be savior of Enterprise, the creator of the great Odyssey 5....he goes on to be partially responsible for the worst seasons of 24 and Dexter ever made. Meanwhile, Braga continued to shag Jeri Ryan.

The writing was terrible. I remember one episode where Archer offended a newly contacted alien civilization...by allowing his dog to pee on their tree. The dog gets sick and the entire episode features Archer and Flox in sickbar arguing over the stupidity of the aliens with a fake dog in a water tank. Then there were all of those decontamination scenes where the crew sensually rub each other over with oil... The whole time travel arc was idiotic and made no sense and the Xindi plot, while an improvement, was more StarWars than StarTrek. I didn't deserve one season, never mind four.

I'm not saying I hate it - I can watch it and enjoy it. But for me, it's not real Trek, and doesn't come anywhere near close to the other series. It's actually a shame because I really wanted it to be the best series ever. All the ingredients were there. I love Scott Bakula, but he wasn't born to play a captain. And Linda Park's beauty speaks for itself, but, criminally, they gave her terrible styling and made her look incredibly plain. The show needed: 1. Better male casting 2. Better male characters 3. Better visual design, to make the ship look more attractive and exciting.

What killed Enterprise for me was the lack of focus in the seasons, I mean hell, a prequel of Star Trek where humanity is finally getting to explore space the way the want has almost zero first contact missions or diplomatic missions. Instead they focus on this BS "Temporal Cold War" Rule of Thumb: Don't start your show off with time travel UNLESS it's a show about time travel. I would have liked to see more of the Klingons, Romulans and Andorians in season one, maybe save that time shit for seasons 3 or 4 when they were REALLY struggling. I think, in retrospect, DS9 had one of the more compelling series arcs: Cardassians, Maquis, Dominion and then out. The story flowed so much better when there was a central threat that was recognizable. No one knew what the Xindi were, no one gave a shit about the Suliban. We knew the Cardassians from TNG, we got to know the Maquis because they were set up through the story and fleshed out in Voyager even more. The Dominion were kind of a "oh shit somethings out there" since season 2. Enterprise seemed like shit just got poured out all at once in one or two episodes then they had a few monster of the week episodes, then the finale. Just to clarify, IT WAS NOT A BAD SHOW, it just suffered from lack of focus and some poor writing. Also, RoboCop is kind of a dick in the Star Trek Universe.

The purpose of the show was to identify WHY the Federation operated the way it did with things like the Prime Directive.

  • @ThePorpoisepower

    @ThePorpoisepower

@@Clenched.Cheeks Exactly the first couple seasons were about a fledgling Starfleet making mistake after mistake while learning how to be part of an interconnected galaxy. Diving head first into Menchura class planets only to get poisoned by the local flora. Losing highly advanced technology on primitive worlds and almost starting planetary wide conflicts. But here's the thing... the crew learned, and got smarter, and in some cases very paranoid. They were all flawed people, some worked through their issues, some even got arguably worse. Time travel as an indicator of poor writing, is a tired trope. It can be handled really well, it can be handled poorly. How well you think Enterprise handled it is really up to you. I think the Dominion wars were okay in concept... but I think they wasted a lot of potential on having the Dominion basically rely on drug addicted super soldiers. They are species of shape shifters that could infiltrate any galactic power's executive functions and be nigh on undetectable. Especially if they don't reveal themselves as such. They could have been far more dangerous and chaotic if they got all the major powers to go to war on each other instead. I mean they tried a little but it was mostly out in the open, instead of being all Machiavellian. The Xindi arc was a much bigger deal than the T.C.W... the T.C.W. was mostly a few filler episodes here and there.

If you try to actually quantify it, 75 thousand Starfleet capital ships is actually a pretty low number in the grand scheme of things. There are between 100 and 400 billion stars in the Milky Way. There are a variety of ships Starfleet needs to keep its scheme going. Even if you want to say that there are no military ships they need a lot of ships to keep the Federation going. Diplomatic ships, Science vessels, scouting vessels, repair ships, cargo vessels, colony vessels, Private ships, and more (I added more because combat vessels are not official for a while). If it takes 6 years to design and build a ship and for that number to make sense it would mean that some 600+ ships would have to be built, even that can make sense if you think about it. How many starship wharfs are under Starfleet control. If you think about all the member planets then having enough wharfs to have 3600 capital ships being built all year among thousands of planets is not an impossibility. I personally think the low number of ships is to help keep things in perspective, especially when you think that it could be appropriate to say "The number of capital ships in all of Starfleet matches the human population at the end of the 20th century."

When the registry NCC-1701 was made, the explanation was it was the 17th class of Federation starships, and the 1st of that class. By that logic, the Intrepid-class was the 746th class, which seems like a huge amount. Voyager would be the 56th Intrepid-class, which doesn't add up at all given how new the class was. Beginning with DS9, however, the starship designers just started giving numbers based on whatever they felt like, so it's all nonsense anyway.

  • @Croftice1

@@gmjaken Voyager was the very first Intrepid class ship, so shouldn't it also end with 01? Like NCC 74601 or something? It's pretty clear, they just picked a random number for her. I think Berman confirmed it somewhere, or at least didn't deny it. By the previously mentioned logic also other Enterprise ships shouldn't have NCC 1701 and a letter, instead increasing the 01 at the end, like the 1701A should be 1702, unless it's a refit of the original, which it surely isn't, since it's a different class. It's ok to bear the name Enterprise, but inherit the registry number with it and only a letter added seems pretty off, if you ask me. The registry number 1701 was associated with the name Enterprise, so they just decided to put a letter at the end for whatever reason and call it a day.

I thought it deserved to last as long as TNG! it was a great idea to set a series in the transitional period from post war earth to the federation and it was a great shame that they had to rush it at the end! it would have been great seeing the early federation for a couple of seasons, the introduction of new ships and other technology, I imagined it almost linking up with the early TOS era by season seven.

I think Rick Berman is ultimately responsible for the show being cancelled. I had no real problem with Backula does not bother me at all really. Franchise fatigue is also a issue. If they had waited at least 5 years I think it would have been great. When Enterprise was announced I immediately thought "So soon?"" I'm a BIG Star Trek fan too. The interior only bothered me a little. I accept that you can't make the ship look that much more primitive that the TOS series (the captains chair was made of ply wood). I did have a problem with the concept of the tech being used so early. The transporters seemed to operate better than TOS. Imo they should not have had transporters at all. Phase pistols and photonic torpedoes were both cop outs to bad writing imo. The earlier pulse weapons and missiles made more sense in that era. Don't get me started on Romulan tech. Why did they have early phasers in that era while a century later they were using lasers and laser cannons (The Cage). Hmmm. Don't get me wrong I don't hate the show and did have some good episodes but a lot of things could have done better. With me it kind of a love hate thing when it comes to this show.

A few things in case it wasn't mentioned: 1. X designation is from the military and stands for experimental. So, the NX-01 was following that type of registration. 2. The ships were named after the Space Shuttles and in order of their naming. Columbia was bumped up in the list due to the Columbia disaster in 2003 and they did it to honor those who died. (So, no, the Prime Directive wasn't violated.) 3. A lot information from First Flight about the NX program would have been worth bringing up in this episode, especially with future Captain Jonathan Archer being part of the test pilot team along with Lt. Cmdr Trip Tucker figuring out the intermix that would allow them to crack the Warp 2.5 barrier. 4. The Vulcans held the NX program back so that's why it took us almost a century to go from Warp 1 to Warp 5. As for what killed the series - poor writing and an uneven tone. It also suffered from fans whining about the opening song (which I happened to love and feel inspired by). The show really hit its stride in Season 4 and that's how it should have gone into Season 3 - not with the Xindi arc. I know they wanted the crew to go into some situation where their morals were questioned and they had to things to add drama, but most of Season 3 isn't worth watching. They could have achieved the same drama with different situations and not always doing a wink to the audience about "this is where the Prime Directive comes from." Also, the Temporal Cold War was foggy at best and not well thought out. (I am happy Star Trek Online explained and fleshed this out in their story line).

I read an article a while back that said They originally wanted the show to be set on Earth before the lead up to the Earth-Romulan war and before the Enterprise launched. I always liked the lore from that period of Star Trek with the Humans not knowing what the Romulans look like so anyone on earth could be a spy. The resulting Red scare situation would have made for good television. That and there was a plan to expose Porthos to something would make him talk........

TV & movies were drastically changing back in 2001 too. Reality TV was changing audiences narrative expectations and the post 9/11 cinema movement with Battlestar Galactica or the Bourne Identity series made ENT feel really staged. Taking a year or two off before starting a new Trek series would've really helped the franchise restrategize their approach.

Junkball Media I definitely agree. The producers also wanted the show to be similar to the previously established franchise. There weren't supposed to be any transporters, no two nacelles, it was going to be fresh. But the executives screwed it up real bad, because they wanted it to be "relatable" to the previous works. I would have preferred it if they waited till 2004 to start this show. Better graphics, cheaper cameras and screens, and no post 9/11 bullshit with the Xindi weapon. And they should have had the Romulan war happen in the show, much better enemy then the Xindi, and historically accurate. The NX-01 is still my favorite though, along side the Defiant.

I'm currently binge watching Enterprise on netflix now and I really really like it, as a matter of fact the episode where trip gets cloned is one of my all time favorite star trek episodes. To answer your question though; I don't know why I didn't watch enterprise at the time; maybe 9/11 had something to do with it? the internet was also taking off at the time too; there were a lot of time consuming games that nerds like myself were playing at that time as well. I don't agree. The Xindi Arc is when Enterprise actually got good. Season 1 and 2 were extremely weak. The Xindi Arc gave the show purpose. In an idealistic world, the best episodes of seasons 1 and 2 should be combined together, tossing out all the utter crap, then season 2 be the Xindi arc, season 3 being what we got as season 4, and then a final season 4 doing all the stuff that was left on the table. Television is relentless and unforgiving. Many great shows don't last more than one season (I'm looking at you, Defying Gravity) yet Enterise got three seasons to figure its shit out. I do understand that some people thought the Xindi arc was too long, but it was really needed to make the show about something like DS9 was about the Dominion War, and Voyager was about getting home. Before Xindi, Enterprise was just about uhhh being a Star Trek prequel. That's it.

I wish the writers were more clever with the Xindi Arc though and had it actually tie into the Romulans somehow. Now that would have of stayed true to Trek History and allowed a more plausible explanation for the war between Earth and the Romulans. I do agree though that show got a purpose with the Xindi Arc...and it actually got really good by season 4. I wish they had gotten more seasons.

I actually thought the Xindi story arc added a sort of purpose to the show before they where just bumbling around getting into and out of trouble, now they had a mission, it gave the show direction, the problem was they stretched it out to far and that resulted in tons of filler episodes to make it last the whole season, it was at most a half season story line worth of content.

  • @Snotnarok

    @Snotnarok

Isn't that the idea of Star Trek and the Enterprise? To bumble around and explore? Discover new things and find things while dealing with the consequences? The Xindi thing was a goofy War that pinned the focus on humanity and Earth vs what Star Trek should be about, new strange worlds. The early seasons were immensely interesting as they not only were finding new interesting things in space, the ship itself was new and interesting. Transporters were intimidating & scary, phasers weren't even online and the ship was meshing new species...lightly. To me, Star Trek should be far, far away from Earth, exploring and dealing with situations with diplomacy and firing only when that fails.

  • @fabianfeilcke7220

Actually i think they didn't stretch the story arc far enough. More or less the entire Season 3 was "We are in deep shit". They should have done it like in DS9 with the dominion. Introduce the Xindi slowly as a mysterious background force. Then bumble around in more light hearted way for the rest of the season. Then in the next Season BAM, wipe out Florida, spend a few episodes on figuring out that it was the Xindi and bring the story arc to a conclusion within 3-4 Episodes. Then you have 4-5 Episodes left to start the next cliffhanger-plot..

Can I pick "all of the above." Actually, I like Scott Bakula. He was just wrong for the role. He was a little too... nice... for a military captain. It would have been better if they went for a military hard ass who had a character arc that turned him into an explorer, than the other way around. Rick Berman and the way they made the ship (seemingly more advanced than TOS) were the big killers. Fatigue didn't help, but if the show tried to be different instead of more of the same, things would have been fine.

I didn't mind Season 3. As others have commented, it gave the show direction. Viewers are used to story arc TV series these days, and the old-fashioned style of show, where all of the episodes are discrete stories, with essentially no tie-in to other episodes just isn't as appealing to viewers anymore. I've come to prefer the story arc style myself. That said, the Xindi were pretty hokey as villians, and point to something that had become a major flaw with all of Star Trek: there are just way the hell too damn many alien species in the Federation's part of the galaxy and ALL of them look like human beings with weird protuberances on their foreheads. The problem this causes is you see them, and then you never see them again. Remember the Zakdorn from the TNG episode "Peak Performance"? They were supposed to be a race of tactical and strategic geniuses. Sure would have been useful to have some of those around during the Borg and Dominion wars, but they are conspicuous by their absence. The Xindi are an advanced alien species with technology ahead of Earth's in the 22nd century, who supposedly eventually joined the Federation. And we never even heard of them through all of TNG, DS9, or Voyager. Blame Berman and Braga. They were the primary showrunners for most of Star Trek since late in TNG's run, and they populated the alpha quadrant with a zillion aliens of the week, among their many, many other sins. With Enterprise, they also pissed all over the TOS continuity, because they never particularly liked TOS and refused to be constrained by its continuity. By contrast, with Enterprise's 4th season, when Manny Coto, a true fan of TOS took over creative control, the show got really good, and actively tried to tie into TOS continuity and mesh with it. I may be wrong, but I don't recall any new alien of the week species being introduced that season either. If Coto had been running things from the start, I suspect Enterprise might have made it 7 seasons like its predecessors did.

This. The temporal cold war in and of itself wasn't necessarily an issue. If they had just made it an occasional thing it might've worked out. But it took WAY too much of the spotlight, and made them too busy dealing with timey wimey shenanigans rather than being a prequel.

"The Battle". The one where Picard gets the Stargazer back from the Ferengi. The only thing that's said is that they are in the Xendi Sabu star system, and have visited Xendi Starbase 9. (Yes, it's spelled different.) Nothing else is ever said, and it sounds like they're talking about a star system rather than a race. You could put a spin on it and say they're talking about the Xindi but it's a stretch.

+dave19941000 But funnily, if you not count TOS EVERY Series of Star Trek sucked in the first two seasons. TNG became better with the Borg and evolving away from the TOS premise, DS9 became interesting with the Dominion, VOY was also interesting after this punks in space (Kazons) were left apart and they could finally face the Borg. The forth season with the little arcs was really good, the third was sometimes a bit stretched, as they had one arch over 26 episodes.

Nipp-on-AiR Yeah, but the difference was that TNG, DS9 and Voyager 1) while they had bad opening seasons, where never AS bad as Enterprise, and 2) where all using different formula's that requires experimentation to get right, while Enterprise was effectively copying TOS but 100 years in the past.

  • @acmenipponair

well, also Enterprise needed experimentation. I mean in the way, that they wanted to make a series, that was playing in the TOS part of the universe, but wouldn't just copying TOS. Although you wondered, what they have done the 100 years since Cochrane, as they had quite no understanding about the political situation between Andoria and Vulcan, seemed to not even have made scientific journeys to the nearest 10 light years around us (and that would not have been a thing of a century even with only warp 3)

I always thought that Cochran names it Enterprise after Picard’s ship. Pre-FC time travel, Archer’s ship was probably called Dauntless...since Voyager encountered a fake USS Dauntless NX-01-A and no one commented about the in discrepancy between the ship’s name and number.

The only , ONLY, person that killed Enterprise was Les Mooves. When he bought UPN, and Enterprise, he wanted to make changes. Putting warp nacelles on DS9, having Jolene remove her pointed ears because "shes so much cuter without them" and having a band play every week in the Enterprise mess hall. Berman just threw them in the trash. Mooves didnt get what he wanted so he cancelled the show...hired a bunch of "yes" men and came out with Discovery. Not the ratings, not the fans, not the sponsors, just one spoiled brat of a man who just didnt get his way. Read about in "Star Trek: The Fifty Year Mission" book 2.

Waste processing was what Berman and Braga used to produce scripts for this show it seems. Berman should never have been involved in writing. Especially after insurrection. Braga should have kept a good relationship with Ron Moore during the voyager years and kept him onboard. BSG showed how totally awesome Voyager and Enterprise could have been. Both shows failed to reach their potential. Yes, Scott Backula was awful. He conveyed not authority as captain and was just as hammy as Shatner sometimes, but at least he had authority in the role. But fundamentally the character of Archer too was an idiot. Small minded, ignorant, self righteous, unbelievably stupid and a proponent of genocide. This is a man who was a trained diplomat (apparently) and thought it was a good idea to bring his dog to a crucial diplomatic meeting, and then gets angry at the aliens when the dog offends them. I mean please! Seriously?? Also the scripts relied too much on the incompetence of the crew to advance plots and create drama in the scripts. Epic fail.

Richard Warner the character was wrong for the role of captain, and the actor was wrong for the part. They needed a very different character to fit the show -- more of a military-minded captain, who had to learn to appreciate/invent the role of an space explorer. There's a lot of issues with the show, but getting the whole character and actor wrong for the lead was the biggest one. It's not Scott Bakula's fault, either... he's a great actor, this was just the wrong part for him.

Berman is responsible for implementing the god awful generic musical scores post season 5. It wasn't until he was show runner at voyager and particularly enterprise that his influence began to tell.

Got to laugh at comments talking about "bad writing". Guys, Star Trek has NEVER been Shakespeare, it has always had campy bad writing. Yet people like it which is all that matters. I'm watching this series for the first time now and I'm really enjoying it because I'm not expecting it to be Shakespeare. It is what it is, just enjoy it as some light entertainment. P.S. I actually love this version of the ship, if it was a car it would be a 1990's Toyota - reliable, efficient, tough, and not enough safety features😂

Were Voyager was Commissioned around 2370 a good 218 years later. So its possible that many ships have been built for Starfleet. NX is used for Prototypes.
