Using Micro Spinners on a Tiny Stream!

Ойын-сауық

This was filmed at the same time as my last trout video. I decoded to get on the spinners in the hope of increasing my hook up ratio at this tiny stream and it worked! Those trout really smash into the baits. Hope yo guys enjoy and don't forget to leave suggestions for what you'd like to see in the future!

Stunning trout. When using treble hooks, I will bend one of the barb points so it's resting against the hook shank. That way you can avoid those triple hooked jaw locking hook sets. Makes it much easier to release the fish and it doesn't affect the weight or action of the lure. Give it a try.

You're fishing back to front in this clip. Fish these tiny spinners directly upstream, not down. Like Alexander wanless wrote about "upstream minnow". And be less inclined to get in the water, wading micro waters causes much disturbance, can bugger up redds under your boots too,, I saw a magazine mention of clipping off the treble, substitute a long shank snecked single with a bit of scarlet wool up the shank but keep the hook bend/point clear. I adopted it as a trial, never changed back. "Nibblers" get hooked on that set up that otherwise would only have been followers. and it's massively easier to free the fish from a single. I thought it'd impact hookup rates but if anything it improved that too. Remember, keep your feet dry and fish upstream, especially in fast runs, you could be surprised what's lying there, their dorsals barely covered. Quick retrieve needed to keep the blade rotating. My trout spin gear as a youngster with almost no £ was a (very) old mitchell 300 with the shallow spool, loaded with 2lb main line tied direct to the lure, usually a silver Mepps Aglia no.0. (No pike present) Fished on a soft solid glass green rod, a 7ft "Milbro Spinwell". Virtually indestructible, those were. Served me very well till I discovered fly tackle. You've had quite a season. May your next be twice as good! ...

In my experience with trout, small spinners are the best for enticing both big and small fish. I never usually go bigger than a size 2 mepps. Also, on a small river like that, an equally effective method might be trotting with a small bubble float and a daddy long legs (cranefly) on the hook

Here in the Cambridgeshire fens if you property backs onto a river you usually do own the fishing rights. So that chap may well have been entitled to ask you not to fish there, he was polite. He could have easily formed a small club to fish it. I'm sure that a stream like that would belong to someone. Its your responsibility to check with the landowners before you fish anywhere. I'm the bailiff, have been for over 30 years, for my local club and we have trouble with signs they often get removed or just wear out. Its an expensive job to keep replacing them. I've never experienced any trouble asking people to move, mostly they join the club.

Some people just don't like fishing and it seems a bit suspect that it was a 60 yard stretch, at the back of someone's property that had no signs up and he apparently owns the club. I wonder if the guy comes out to everyone who fishes there to check if they are a member of 'his club' lol. Maybe ginge should have enquired about the club and asked what it was called, how much it is to join to fish his 60 yards and if they have a website.

ALWAYS use wet hands when handling trout if you are releasing them again. it damages the slime on the body and can give and infection in the scales

Looks an interesting bit of river, something I like getting involved with an improving. Bet no one is doing anything to maintain it and yet it seems a good habitat. Does it flow into a main river (don't mention it) very close by? If so, I'll bet it's the main spawning ground for those trout! Nice vid!

It doesn't need improving. I know of dozens of waters that have been ruined by do-gooders interference. Nature is the best conservationists.

@@tonycamplin8607 I've a small river going through my garden, good population of brownies. May spring tides bring sea trout up from the north Devon coast, now they are good sport on light gear!!!

As usual, superb vid, amazing quality of brownies from that little stream. Don't know if I'd be inclined to fish up rather than down, and keep out of the water as much as possible. Wading does not spook fish in a bigger river, but that spot is tiny. I thought you'd be using your new found fly fishing skills! I've fished spinner a fair bit in my youth, but I find they fight better on fly, rather than all the thrashing, a good fish will set off on dazzling runs and airborne acrobatics! You'd love it man! Check out soul trader 57, big lune trout ( that's me last Friday) to see what a really good brown can fight. Now all I need is a good pike fishing vid!!!

2gm Abu Droppens (can't get them any more), I hardly ever use mine last few as I don;t want to loose them. 3cm Floating Rappalas great for floating down under overhangs. 5gm Tobies, if they are still available, trout and big chub attack them as if they are an abomination, not to feed, just to kill. Works for me.

Hi, great vids thanks. Have you tried changing the trebles to single hooks, all my bass kit now has single hooks and I don't feel the hookup rate has dropped.

I use singles on all my spoons and bucktail musky spinners for pike fishing. If anything the singles have improved my hook-up rate over trebles.

Have you used the tiny plastics? I found the 1" Berkley Gulp! minnows to be murder, and there was an American lure company that made this stuff specifically back when. It was called Renosky IIRC. Also, get a Rocky Jr. and Rocky Sr. Whoops, I just looked at the price, forget it. If you find a river that has BIG browns nobody can get to eat, the Cowboys out West here figured out MOUSE patterns at night did the trick.

I personally think that if its only a short section you weren't allowed to fish, i think the truth of it was, the home owner didn't want you fishing at the back of their property.. So ignore that, and research it first., 😉

The home owner probably owns the fishing rights. Here in the Cambridgeshire fens he would, I own the rights to a short stretch of river myself.

I'm not sure what that small fish was that got into your landing net but I'll bet that is what any trophy browns are feeding on. I wasn't surprised to hear you say that jigs work better than spinners on this body of water as they are more closely imitating the forage present.
