We get this question all the time, and the answer is complicated! We go over using a credit card to set your grain mill gap setting, and why it can be helpful for those starting out, but a one size fits all approach isn't going to be your long-term solution.

There are so many variables with this topic. As another person here said, speed of milling is critical. Diameter of the rollers plays a big part in the quality and consistency of the grind. How about preconditioning your grain to keep husks intact? Even down to the knurl pattern on the rollers plays a part. I first bought an el cheapo and wore it out in a couple years. Went to an MM3 and I’m so impressed with the consistency of the grind and lack of powder. I set mine to .035” and it routinely delivers 80% efficiency with BIB.

Thanks I have been looking at tightening my gap for BIAG setup for my 10G batches - saw a big drop in efficiency since I started doing BIAB and i think i can go finer. typically a 30 lb grain bill

Well said, thanks for contributing, especially with your gap setting! We're talking more about efficiency on FBF this week too. Cheers!
I like that they teach along with selling.
The smaller size in crystal malts is largely due to the use of 6-row barley, especially by American maltsters. However, IIRC, Briess has stated a few months ago that they will be using 2-row for their crystal malts in the near future.

I think this happened longer ago than I thought. I see that Briess was already using 2-row in their crystal malts in at least mid-2021. Some listings I see online for the malts even call it “2-Row Crystal 15L”.
I tried this with a mill that I picked up second hand and I basically made flour 😂 adjusted it to about 2 credit cards and they seemed to crush well keeping the husks more intact
Thank you for all..
I like my maltzilla... makes flour but somehow leaves a lot of hulls
I use a digital caliper to modify a pack of post-it notes to my desired gap size. I couldn't find a set of gauges that would have the right size in them. And hand crank is the way to go for my modest needs, tried a drill once and it was way too hard to control. Besides, need the exercise.
How about a speed for grinding. Hand crank speed or Ludacris speed?

I noticed my el cheapo does better at a slower speed.

@@crashtke i have an el cheapo as well with a drill hooked to it. I get a pretty good dusting going on.

This is a great question, and probably worth us spending some time on to do a deep dive video! A hand crank will be more than sufficient at what you can generate yourself, but if you attached a drill or created a motorized unit yourself, the grain could get pulverized if it goes too fast. Let's do a deep dive and get back to you! 🍻
Do you know what size your crush is for the pre-crush grain you sell?

@@MoreBeer_ Awesome video! I ask because I have done several of your kits, and my mash efficiency has been lower than what the calculations tell me. I was considering starting to mill my own and run a little finer to see if I can boost my numbers up.
