ABOUT GÉRALDINE
Hi! I’m Géraldine Lepère, the founder of Comme une Française (= “Like a French woman”) and your new French best friend. :)
Each Tuesday, I share a fun, fresh and bite-sized lesson on French language and French culture-from embarrassing mistakes to avoid to pop-cultural references to “get” !
For over five years now, with millions of views and students in over 56 countries, I’ve been helping people just like you gain the confidence to really talk in French. And better than the “textbook” French from high school!

No really it is really important to use the starting and ending phrases.

I started learning French in the 1970s. Of course there was no internet then or youtube. This channel would have been so useful back then. But I'm glad I found it now!
I am retired and living in assisted living so I appreciate your free courses. My last name is pronounced ,"Pauls", or with a low "a" sound.
Enfin un livre en Français!
My French classes did not prepare me well enough for my move to France at the age of 58. I lived there for a total of 9 years. I wish my French were as good as your English. And written French ! The rules are Ridiculous ! Merci Bien ❤️💐
It’s a great class I found today, then i have tried several classes immediately, very practical and useful, only one little wish is to use more french to teaching in class, thanks it will be even greater…merci

Bonne soirée Mme Géraldine. Merci pour la leçon.
thank you for the good lesson .. we local here don't know the fact that what we understand as english often times is french as we say them and how those two languages that share so many words in exact same meaning actually sounds so differently in use.. merci beacoup encore!

Very helpful!
merci
Mille fois merci, Geraldine.
Just to be especially obnoxious, I think its more common for Americans to say "deli" or "convenience store" as opposed to "mom and pop," in regard to a small independent grocery or snack/beverage store. In New York City, you could say "bodega." In America, you would more likely use "mom and pop" for a retail store, not a food store. The being said, I have learned an enormous amount from this great video. Thank you for your insights on this! You know far more English than I know French so I will "put a sock in it" now. Bissous! Hero
I just found your channel and I am so happy I did. This is wonderful content. Thank you for all of the printable PDFs as well. It really helps to be able to have things to study while on break at work :)
Second time around of me watching this video I liked it even more.
Pour préciser, un café crème is a regular coffee with cream, but un noisette is a shot of espresso with a dollop,of cream! :)
Bonjour Geraldine, Merci. c'etait tres informative. Barbara
Beautiful countryside there
Thank you. This is very helpful.
Merci, Geraldine.
So practical! I love ❤️ this! So, how do I say: 1. May I smoke here? 2. Is it permitted to smoke here? (For outdoor cafes.)

Ficou legal. 👍
It's the same in my language, Terrace = teras (indonesian). Thanks for a great video👏
Merci :-)
You are the bestttttt
You are sooo cute! I love learning French with you. Merci beaucoup.
Wonderful thank you for your amazing lessons 💕💕

You're welcome Ghada.
Je vais vous prendre makes perfect sense. Anyone in Britain should recall that until recently, after a shopkeeper asks: what can I get you/what would you like?, it is still fairly common to say: I'll have or take one of your/one of those...

When you said, "Bonjour à tous", the closed captions thought you said, "Preservatives". Mdr.
I ordered cafe au lait in Paris and was hoping for the American kind😂. Now I know it's cafe allonge. Maybe I will say cafe American next time 😅😆. Merci for the info!
Hi Geraldine ! Merci pour la classe ! How does one say 'one shot' , 'two shots' etc pls ? I like my coffee 'allonge' but not with four shots in (as sometimes happens here !) - just extra water. I tried to explain that literally once and caused so much confusion !

Bravo Anita !
I’m trying to locate the lovely video you recorded with another Geraldine who is a professor at a university and understands phonic. I’d appreciate the link to that vide. Merci!
You described me perfectly, after buying something, hearing "Et avec ceci" said very fast. I stand there with a confused smile and mumble "oui?" because I have no idea what was just said. Merci! Also, "Je vais vous prendre" is very useful, and even though we have a similar phrase in American English, I never thought it would work in French.

Bonjour!
@Commeunefrancaise

Please make a video in Spanish or where you compare Spanish and French. Many English speaking French students are also learning Spanish or know some Spanish. Sometimes I try to speak French and a Spanish words comes out. Help me!
Merci d’avance!
@Commeunefrancaise

Love your lessons! Question. What would be the difference between "Je voudrais un café" and "Je vais vous prendre..."? Greetings from Puert Rico.
@Dragon-Divas
In English it would be the same distinction between "I'd like a coffee" and "I'll take some coffee".
I remember a couple in Paris asking me in French how to say "souvenir" in English. I don't think they believed me when I said "souvenir." I also was amused by teenage french students I was hosting asking me, "What does it mean - Pretty Ugly?" lol! What a good question!
@magistrumartium

The English translation of "souvenir" is "to remember," but In English "souvenir" is a noun meaning "memento."

Never thought of that before. The goodness of prettiness being taken as an extremely good thing, 'pretty' then became an enhancer for other words, he's pretty good, pretty famous, pretty smart, etc... and then it was applied in the negative and you get pretty bad, pretty dirty, and ultimately it rolls up against its own opposite.
I've only had ONE instance when someone bothered to ask if they could smoke when we were sitting en terrasse and when I said that I preferred they didn't, they got really irritated and moved 2 tables down and started smoking. It seems like asking if people around you care is just a rhetorical question and if you sit outside, it's just expected that you will be okay with smokers. This is one big thing I miss about the US!
Why “je vais VOUS prendre” and not “je vais prendre”?
