I picked up a brand new Winchester model 70 extreme weather, in 264 win mag. Wasn’t my first choice in caliber but I got it for $599 at my local second amendments right before Turners took it over. Now watching this video I want to finally bed it and work some loads up for it. I’ve had it for about two years and haven’t touched it.

This is your best video by far! Been playing used rifle roulette over 35 years, my favorite kind of gambling, I've had to clean up the barrel crowns on most of my 2nd hand gambles, larger than bore round headed brass slotted screw chucked slow turning in a cordless drill, and 600 grit or finer valve grinding compound on a paper towel plugged muzzle works wonders on factory crowns, got it from an old article in "Rifle" magazine back in the late 80's

Good luck with your M77. I took an M77/.270 to my gunsmith and had a Shilen 24 inch .284 barrel installed in 7 mm Mauser. I am working a load for it using 154 grain bullets. The problem so far is the fact that all load manuals show light loads for the 7x57's because it is unknown the quality of the firearms people are going to use. I have had to surpass the listed maximum loads in most of my manuals to get from the 7x57 what is is truly capable of. I have used and hunted with a 7x57 for many years so I believe a 7mm08 is a good choice. I sure am happy with my choice of barrel and loads so far. I did have the barrel stamped .275 Rigby rather than 7x57 though.

I had one of those Winchesters in .30-06. Beautiful rifle. The issue was it had craptastic accuracy. I tried everything and finally gave up and offloaded it. I love Winchester Model 70s, BTW. Thanks for the video.

Being involved in the automotive world that term is definitely something we see happen, BUT I think when someone squires something with the intention to make it a project and know how to do all the more intricate processes it’s a fair bet it will come out good. I’ve bought complete running driving trucks just to drive them home and rip the drivetrain out to put in upgraded parts I’ve had in stock, but would never do that if I was trying to save a buck and just get it to work.

@@45-70Guy If you've followed my channel for long, you know that I also build rock-crawlers and hot rods. I have literally driven 4 Jeeps off the dealership lot, went straight home, and ripped everything out of them (axles, suspension, transfer case, bumpers, factory cage, fenders, seats, exhaust, etc.). In 2013 I bought a brand new mustang GT; and it was boosted with a race suspension on slicks in a month! In the end, I guess I did mods to this rifle that I would have done anyway. I really wasn't interested in a process of elimination (which seems to be what most viewers wanted); I just wanted a rifle built the way I like it.

There is a good chance this rifle would have been sub MOA without bedding and trigger swap. It just needed ammo/bullet weights it agreed with and a good marksman.

That’s a beautiful rifle. I’ve been Handloading my 7mm08 for quite a while. When Winchester came out with the StaBall 6.5 it turned that cartridge into a rocket. I’m shooting a 140 at 3000fps, 150 nosler at 2910 fps and a 165 Sierra game changer at 2800 all with no pressure. Most groups are under 1”. This is out of a weatherby vanguard with a 24” barrel. Awesome job!!

I never had an understanding of bedding the site rail until now…looks like that, not only did you convince me on ring lapping, now I’m going to take the ring bases off and check those tolerances as well. Fortunately, all of my rifles shoot sub MOA groups but…I also think I’m leaving some additionally accuracy on the table. Funny though…it seems that every time I watch one of your videos, I end with more homework…lol Thanks for the great information.

I have always loved Winchester Model 70's and Model 94's. I collect both. I had two Model 70's. Thanks to you my Model 70 addiction only intensified. I now own 9 Model 70's in just about every flavor. Only one I am missing? At least for my collection? Model 70 Safari Express! One of these days I will find mine! :) Ha-ha! :) Thanks for the videos. I had a model 70 super grade maple in 300 win mag. When I realized my 500 dollar Winchester xpr was more accurate I decided it was a rip off and got rid of it

@@rickybristersmusic3658 I have two stainless ultimate shadows that were made around 2014, one .270 and one 30-06. I put both into a Bell and Carlson stock and they are great rifles. Unlike a lot of the current models they have 24” barrels which I prefer also.

You and me both. I have several Winchester rifles. Most were inherited. From my family. I have 2 1894 26" octagon barrels. One made in 1898 was great grandpaps 32-40,and the one I still hunt with was grandpaps 30 wcf. Made in 1909. Both are 100 percent reliable and both very accurate. I killed my deer this year with 1 shot. My bolts are all pre 64 m 70 . And I have a m54 serial 3547 made in 1925. All are original. All work and shoot very well. 😊

Great episode. I have an Extreme Weather in .270 Win. I got it originally to be a donor action for a foul weather 9.2x63 build, but ended up keeping it as .270. When I contacted Douglas Barrels about doing the job they said they’d had issues with rebarreling the fine-pitch stainless steel actions of FN Winchesters and that they wouldn’t do it. Oh well, may try a different barrel smith in the future with a different stainless action for that build.

I had one in 270 Win also. I sold it, but not because it wouldn't shoot. Right from the factory, with zero break in of any kind it was a 0.5-0.75" rifle with many bullets, but it really liked 140 grain BTSP from Hornady. I sold it after a few hunts with it.....just due to how heavy it was for packing in the mountains. They are great rifles and if I were 20 years younger I would not care about that extra weight. :)

Hi desert dog. I am a Winchester rifle man. I even have a m54 made in 1925. Serial 3527 . It works sweet. It's stamped 30 gov 06..I have 2 m1894,s one made 1898,and one1909. Both were handed down my my grandfather's. Both still work. He can sell me all his Winchester he doesn't want.

Patience, and sometimes self-evaluation goes a long way. I often see guys at the gun club complaining about rifles; then I put their rifle on my rest, adjust the scope, and print a fantastic group. I think many rifle issues are actually user issues.

You can. Just gota buy sum good tools and research the process from reputable installers. Make sure your how to vids are from a quality gunsmith. You can do any of these things np. I taught myself to do my own gunsmithing to save $. I don't do machine work but I do everything else. It's been fun learning and more fun when things actually work great. after. Have faith in yourself you can do this!

I own one of these in 6.5 prc with a muzzle break. Mine would send two shots touching each other and the third would be farther away. Muzzle break was loose. Mine is a used rifle as well so I played roulette. Great video.

Good professional job I recently bought a sako 85 300wsm out of the paper and it was one of them smoking deals so I diddent look real close at the scope that was on it I diddent care for it to begin with I was after the rifle I kinda got the feeling something wasn't right when I got home it was late so I went to the safe to put the gun away and when I put it in and the butt hit the bottom I heard a thump and looked and the scope had fallen off and when I looked closer I started laughing the old man had straight scope rails on the sako tapered rails I put on a set of adapters when out with the first load and shot half inch at 100 yards iam happy I got a thousand dollars in accessories with the rifle all for under a grand..

Excellent outcome by addressing all known DIY Possibilities! Approaching the reported issue of inaccuracy you certainly could have approached the problem by process of elimination. Which of course would have taken several days and more time. Your building the methods for accuracy achievement into your video reveals proper method and analysis for specific attachment used in your quest for the best available accuracy that you were capable of having carefully developing each proven process application to this particular fine firearm. Winchester M70 ALL WEATHER BY FN! WOW ! A rainbow worth chasing ! Or Roulette worth Spinning. Your confidence and method application with that specific caliber had an endgame as all around foul weather gun. Elmer Keith often told me BEWARE OF THE GUY WITH ONE GUN! THIS MIGHT BE YOURS FOR MOST AS BULLETS ARE AVAILABLE . I am certain your followers will appreciate your tutorial on building out a reliable hunting rife. I know I did !

I have two model 70s myself. My favorite gun

First thing I do before touching the rifle is bore scope the chamber and barrel. I will also sight through barrel or use laser to set up scope as I've seen screw holes or barrel not true with action. I stopped messing with other rifles after setting up a couple 1/3-1/2 moa Savages(used pawn shop) for little money

What great advice you shared. I bought a used Winchester model 70 Ranger in 270 win. Off the used rack for next to nothing. It has the closed magazine. My intentions were to re barrel the action. I took it to the range and it shot remarkable well . So I decided to keep it as is .I discovered that the action had been bedded . If memory serves me correct I paid 275. For it. With a Scope a Nikon Buck master.

Last year I had a Wby Vanguard in 22-250 re-barreled. Long story short I could not get that gun to shoot anywhere near what the original barrel did when it was shooting good. Anyway I bedded a new Boyds stock on it, re-installed and lapped the scope. Now with factory loads I'm seeing a big improvement shooting consistent groups under moa. I thought the barrel must be a dud and was going to give up on it before I ordered that stock. Excited to get some handloads through it to see what it can do. Thanks for the great advice! Cheers!

That scope alignment tool is worth its weight in gold. Many people back in the day recommended lapping rings but it has fell to the wayside for the majority of people, I think many want to just bolt parts on and be good to go.

I think it continues to fall on deaf ears today. People say "the manufacture says these don't need to be lapped", and continue their project with a half-ass install. Every good gunsmith I've worked for or came across laps the rings on EVERY rifle they own. The top-tier 1-piece mounts (like Spuhr and MPA) are truly the only thing I've come across that doesn't need lapping.

Bought a Mauser that didn’t fire. Cleaned the grease out of the firing pin channel and had a chuckle.

Sweet rifle, love the Winchester stainless

I have that same rifle, but in 6.5 Creedmoor. It is a fantastic rifle. I was having terrible accuracy with Hornady GMX, but with factory Barnes TTSX my groups are under one MOA. I will also add that Federal American Eagle open tip match very closely mimics the Barnes factory load, so that makes for a good practice load on the cheap. That said, I recently developed my own loads for this rifle. Can't wait to go to the range and test them out.

I think I have been lucky. Most of my rifles were acquired thru the used market. With only a couple exceptions they have all done really well for me.

Nice video. Nice bedding job and a nice look at your reloading process. It is a good idea that if playing Used Rifle Roulette to get one from people you know and have the history. I got burned from a pistol I traded a good shooter for another just to get a longer barrel for hunting and it was a problem child. I usually just buy new anymore. That can be roulette as well but not so much as used. Thanks!

I find used gems all the time. I honestly cant recall the last new gun I actually bought. I do have a buddy who refuses to share his accuracy woes with me though after he sold me a super blackhawk .44 that “couldn’t hold on target at 30 yards” I cleaned it up adjusted the sight after finding a load I liked and outshot his fancy colt anaconda replacement in a week 😂. (Still was drooling over the colt though)

All of the m70 rifles I ever had I lapped the barrels also. It seemed to really help. Sometimes they leave burs in the barrel after machining they seemed to settle down after lapping then

I have a friend who had a very similar problem with a very expensive custom 300 win mag. He was planning a hunting trip to Africa. After scoping the rifle we were getting 6 inch groups at 200 yards with factory 150grain ammo. I pulled the bullets and weighed the powder charges and found a variation of up to 5 grains. And this was from a very reputable ammo company. After testing some 165, 168, 180 grain bullets we settled on 168 grain Barnes I believe but not positive this was a few years ago. Then tried a few different powder charges. That gun now shoots 1 inch or better at 200 yards so it’s half moa. Using a Tract Toric scope with a custom turret he was able to hit targets at 1000 yards when he tested his zero in Africa.

I think the previous owner was probably just a terrible shot. Ive never seen a factory rifle shoot 5 moa

I ran into the same problem with the same rifle in a 25-06 Did everything you did and finally got it to shoot 1/2 groups with 100 grain Barnes ttsx over imr4350 and federal match primers

Its amazing how no two rifles shoot the same. the snowflakes of accuracy...

I have the same rifle in 7mm Rem mag! You'll love that rifle. Mine does 3/4 MOA roughly. It likes Hornady SST'S and Eld-x bullets. Said bullets are not ideal for bigger game but for deer they are alright. I definitely want to play around with it. Patience is the key.

I have a SC EW in 308 love it. I really like the black stock , looks very cool. And I hear the SC ones are made well.

That is usually my strategy.

Desert dog my m70 are a 1952 30-06,and a225. Both are very accurate and smooth like butter bolts. All original walnut stocks.

Desert dog. Have you ever used a Winchester m54. I bought one about 7 years ago.its al original with a very nice ghost ring open sights. It's original to. . It's serial number 3527. I researched it and it was made in 1925. Caliber 30 gov of 06. For open sights it's very accurate. Ide never have it drilled for scope mount.same action as the m70. Butter smooth bolt.

I have had good luck with used firearms and have had only a couple duds. Used scopes on the other hand…

PAC-Nor are great! They had a bad fire awhile back so not sure how they are doing now but Craig Boddington used them on several of his rifles and only had good things to say so that means a lot🙌👏👊

I have this exact rifle, I just got it. I have a hard time grouping under 1-2" at 100 yds. I think that is more of my shooting abilities than the gun or set-up though, being a new shooter. I just need to practice more, work on not pulling my shots or the mild flinch from the bang.

Big fan of the SS model 70. In the right cartridge it would be perfect for a mountain or Alaska rifle.

As long as you do a proper load development process. Unfortunately, most people simply pick a load out of a book or online, and those people are better off buying factory ammo. I believe the original owner of this rifle, even though he is a reloader, did not do actual load development.

Looking to play Used-Rifle Roulette. I have a 1994 Ruger M77, Mk II in 30-06, and it does just fine, but who needs an excuse to buy a second rifle? My budget is midway between "Budget" and "Hi-Grade." Can you please recommend manufacturers who built above average rifles in 25-06 and 30-06 and aren't a collector piece.

I buy guns from rancher's auctions here in Western SD. The only reason they get sold is when the owner no longer needs it. I've had very good luck at getting quality stuff. I go to gun shows, but just as a tire kicker. For the reasons you mentioned. You would be well received here in ranch country. Even being a Californian.We get pretty tired of modern day hunters and their black rifles. Then, there is the " long range" crowd, who are helpless without a bench or " shooting sticks", but want to be farther, not closer. Thats not how we do it, whether in ranch country or Indian lands.

Coming at you from Southeast South Dakota. A few years back I was hunting Western South Dakota I was carrying a AR 15 Sporting rifle in 350 Legend. A ranch hand gave me grief over it. I told him I'm 61 years old I killed many Deer .I served in the Marine Corps 40 sum years ago. He tip his Cowboy hat and said enjoy your hunt

I have been lucky for the most part with getting used rifles till now I picked up a Remington 721 B in a 30-06 and it has accuracy problems but I haven’t used all my bag of tricks to get it to shoot yet I will screw a new barrel on it if the barrel is eroded I am going to look at it with a bore scope I have cleaned the barrel really good and change out scopes and mounts couple of times and I bedded the action and I have been messing with my different hand loads that have gave good accuracy in other 30-06 I have I will have to shoot it again because I just bedded the action and a inch of the barrel

Think your friend has seen this video and will try to buy that rifle back from you? Seeing you go through those steps was very interesting. I'll have to look back through your videos to see if you have a more detailed video on stock bedding. Also, that load development procedure was very informative. I've always just picked a load out of my old Seirra loading book and went with it. Looks like I'll have to clean up my act. Should be interesting with Seirra 300 gr SBTs in my M-70 .375 H&H.

This was a great video of what can and should be done to get the most consisitancey out of your set up. Just a couple observations. looked like 41.8 G was more in the middle of that platue for loading but u still got great accuracey although 41.8 may allow for more charge variances and temp fluctiation. I suspect dependant on what scope mounts the previuse owner used it may have torqued the action being out of plane when tightened down or his scope is bad but it could be so many things really and lastly it would have been nice if you brought him along and taught him and showed him all this things so he could maybe do his own from now own. either way good stuff here. PS my boys first rifle was mod 70 just like my first and after struggeling to get it to group for a long time i found the chamber was reamed out of spec. winchester replaced with one just like yours after i gave them an ear full and its a tack driver.

42 grains was just a nice even number to get me started with the virgin brass at 100% load density. The real load development begins when I get my first batch of fired brass. My hope is that the fired Alpha brass gives me enough additional case capacity to find a node in the 2800s. I might even get enough extra capacity to use H4350. The original owner had no interest in taking my advice or letting me help him develop a load. I can't force people to accept my help. If they already know everything, I have nothing to offer.

Great video and job educating the crowd on how to trouble shoot a rifle. My opinion, I think your buddy has range issues. No way that gun shoots 5MOA.

Being a 60+ year gun collector there is some good buys and some very bad buys! Knowing what to look for is a education in its self and knowing what to look! I always look at the gun in person and not online only! On very old rifles always use a go no go guage! Most of the problems are from someone butchering the gun up not factory defects! I buy a whole lot of guns from pawn shops where the Best Buy’s and worst buy are most of the time! I bought a like new model 70 in the all weather model in 7 rem mag with the accubrake on it! I don’t care for the old tuner brakes they had and wanted a 24” instead of a 26” so I had my friend who is one of if not the best smith in the state shorten it 2” and put a regular break on it! It shoots fantastic and is one of my younger son’s bad weather elk rifle. He currently has 8 of my rifles in for some kind of build or modifications! I send all my guns unless new in for him to out barrels or safety’s or stocks on besides the usual limbsaver pads and breaks. He makes me a great deal on everything and I return I find great deals on guns or ammo for him besides the customers I send his way! He works about 360 days a year yes I said 360 days. He is a master retired PRS shooter and one great smith! He is backed up for a year unless your his friend and even then it’s backed up! Good smithed are NEVER out of work!
