95% of my hunting is done with fixed parallax scopes. Run a Maven RS2 2-10x38 on my ultralight 25-06ai & 280ai rifles, and that scope has served me well out west in the midwest and back home in the southeast on both guns so cant complain.

Sound in formation on fix parrallax scopes. I've in fact just gone back to fixed parrallax scope , but I have reduced it from 100 yards to 25 /30 yards parrallax being I am using this one on a air rifle , cheers for the great video. 👍

I didn’t know that! This series has been great… even if it’s confirming my thinking that a decent 2-7x or 3-9x scope is good enough for hunting here in Maine. Oh and that first focal plane is nonsense for most hunting, regardless of how great FFP is for long range target shooting.

I am a hunter and a long range target shooter. I don’t mix the two. For hunting I like to be close enough to ensure an ethical kill and close enough if something goes wrong I can do something about it. For hunting I use lower powered scopes without parallax adjustment. Keep it simple for hunting and get in close enough to make sure.

"Set it and forget it scopes" Almost seems to be a passing era anymore IMHO, yet I do have preference for this train of thought as the time for dialing anything can be time not so well spent in some cases. All your points are in my mind very valid, and I hope you don't mind me adding that zeroing a fixed parallax scope at its parallax distance is another means of eliminating a small degree of potential parallax error and frustrations. Huge points for the most simplistic means of finding proper cheek weld being ring shadow, this becomes second nature after years of fixed parallax shooting and can be fundamentals displaced as it becomes second nature. This from a guy shooting a 150 yard fixed parallax 4.5-14x50 mounted on a .308 Winchester sporter barrel that heats to inaccuracy in three consecutive trigger pulls, so there's that to take into account too.

Great Video DD. The scopes on my hunting rifles and on my kids rifles are all fixed parallax for the reasons of ruggedness, simplicity and weight. Ive hunted in the west my entire life which a lot of people seem to think mandates a high magnification target/prc scope which I can understand if your hunting strategy is to just start blasting away at longrange rather than stalking in for a closer shot. Long stalks through rugged country, ethical hunting distances and long packins and outs- ill take my lower magnification fixed parallax scopes all day.

For 90% of hunters out there…a good second plane, capped turret, 150 yard fixed parallax, 2.5x10x42 is all the scope they’ll ever need. Set it up for mpbr and don’t take a shot past that. Half the people that have scopes capable of more can’t shoot that far ethically anyway.

Totally agree on every point, In most hunting situations out past 300 yards all that adjusting turrets and parallax and magnification there’s a good chance that buck that’s standing there watching has decided to leave the area. Set up for max point blank range, possibly crank the magnification up a bit if it’s 2 or 3 hundred yards as you get into shooting position and make your shot!

My most recent scope purchase is the cheapest and most basic I've had, a hawke vantage 4x32, fixed parallax at 100yds, fixed magnification. Simple crosshare reticle, I love it, love there's no fiddling, just aim and fire. I've always had more complicated scopes but for deer in the woods, quick and simple is the key. It's also lightweight which is a great bonus and has quite good light transmission due to the exit pupil and glass quality and decent eye relief. Never heard of people using this scope on a deer rifle but it's working for me 👍, nice video about cutting through the jungle of bullshit on the internet. !!

Excellent discussion. I have a few Trijicon Credo, one of them the 3-9x40 w/o parallax. It's only when trying to see the target with super sharpness at 300 yds that I miss the parallax adjustment. If I think only about precision on the target, rather than wanting camera image quality in the sight picture, there is no issue. It's more psychological than anything, I think, as long as you're centered behind the scope.

A consistent mount of the firearm in the shoulder, a consistent cheek-weld/sight picture and a properly assembled rifle will get you way further than a million dollar scope ever will. The biggest mistake I used to see people make in trapshooting (I did that for years) was to raise their trigger hand elbow (right for right handers, left for left handers) WAY above 90 degrees, which would cant the shotgun the opposite way, as the raised hand was effectively “pushing” the shotgun over. It maybe barely noticeable to the shooter, but, extend the arc out to shooting distance, and it can be quite large, resulting in inconstant performance at best. Best option is to tuck that elbow in, which helps to keep the shotgun straight up and down. This all bears out the same with rifles. Most important is a well-fitting firearm and a comfortable mounting of the rifle that is easily repeatable, and the rest will follow. Nip bad habits in the bud, and practice the good ones, so that it all becomes almost muscle memory. And, learn to trust yourself more, and be able to quickly work out those that will do you more harm than good. And the dreaded Gun Shop Salesman, the so-called expert. All he usually wants to do is fleece you of more cash. Anyway, good, honest, informative video and really well presented. Top marks. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Cheers from Down Under.

Hi desert dog. From Pennsylvania buddy Jeff. I shoot 30wcf, and 44 mag rifles either Winchester or Henry lever rifle. Both my rifles have Leupold 1-5 scopes. I rarely shoot farther tan 150 yards. Both my rifles shoot that far very easily. My country is steep rocky and very thick. Mountain Laurel and oak trees. I took my m94 to South Dakota and took a very nice buck. And a coyote at 207 yards with my Winchester m94 30-30. I know newer us better but my 30-30 works very well for me. I know both my rifles.😊

About damn time someone puts out some common sense scope facts, I love all these high magnification ffp scopes on hunting rifles guys in camp, especially when the average shot even out West where I hunt is under 300 yards, most of my rifles are wearing fixed power Leupold scopes...6x42 and a couple 2.5x10... NEVER needed any more than that.

Hi desert dog. I didn't think you liked the 30-30. I guess we can get along now. I absolutely love the 30 wcf cartridges. I inherited my grandpaps 1894 30 wcf after he passed away. It was made in 1909. I still use it and i still wear his woolrich coat and use his hunting knife. I don't carry it if it is raining. I carry my m94 30-30 . It has a side mounted scope. I take grandpaps rifle every deer season, but not evey day. Call me old fashioned, because that is what i am . I fill my freezer every year whit what i use. To each his own.
@jaybailleaux6307 ай бұрын
For hunting game , I will always believe a 2×7 fixed parallax scope is the best all-around hunting scope. Hunting with 3x9 or 4.5 x14 I end up needing less power in hunting situations like in heavy cover or moving game. Deer rarely ever presents themselves as perfect targets. Only time I need high magnification and best glass possible is small long-range targets like crows or prairie dogs. I would also add load testing at the target range. One could use a fixed 24 power scope just for that purpose. After load testing, one can then remove it and mount the hunting scope of thir choice. Hunters do not understand that hunting skills and marksmanship is what puts meat in the freezer. Owning the best rife and scope in the world will not magically put meat in the freezer and a trophy on the wall.

The best method for dealing with fixed parallax scopes is to set the scope so that it is to far forward on purpose. This causes you to have scope shadow present in your scope all the time when you shoulder the rifle. From there you just set your crosshairs on your target, center the scope shadow and fire. If the scope shadow is centered then you know your eye is centered and you've eliminated any parallax errors. Scope shadow is your friend if you understand how it works.

Desert dog. Im a hunter. I spent 18 years in the Alaska bush. I had to come home to Pennsylvania after my father passed away cutting timber. I lived with my rifles. Now i work for the Pennsylvania game commission. Go figure. I absolutely love my job. Im in the Pennsylvania forest every day for my job. God is good. Long live the 30-30
DD, love the intro music. I love my budget vortex bdc sfp 4-12.
Perfect ! Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Great informative video 👍
Great explanation DD, all my shooting of deer is 100 yards or less so my fixed parallax scopes are just fine. Respect 🇬🇧 Perhaps I need an adjustable parallax scope on my .45/70 🤔. Mentioned that just to mess with you DD as I know you just love the .45/70 cartridge.
I am enjoying scope month…except for the part where I’m about to go crazy now trying to decide on my next scope for my 30-06. I’m still thinking about the Credo HX 1-6. Also what base and rings do you have on that 35 Whelen?
Great content! Do you have a video about the difference between FFP and SFP?
Most shooters are undereducated about scopes. This series has opened my eyes considerably. I cannot seem to find the alignment tool you showed in that video here in the US. Appears to be available in Australia/NewZealand. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time on this topic.

There are two links in the description. One is the cheaper e-bay tool which works great. The other is from Australia and takes about a month to get.

Thanks for the answer I did go to the website for the tool you recommended it is the better option. But I did not see US in the list of countries to ship to. I will go back and look. Thanks again.
👍👍👌
I have a video series request DD. Could you please make a series on how YOU set up a rifle from box to sight in?

I have something similar to this being released next month.
One of my scopes has the parallax adjustment at the front of the scope. You have to turn the entire end.

That system is less convenient, but more reliable.
Fixed parallax scopes are what you want for any normal range hunting.
Does 40 vs 50mm objective have any impact on focal distance or parallax? All other things being equal of course.
Will be referring to this series. Still dont know really how far trust veriable over fixed power. Still .come to use veriables more. And peep sights❤
How ya like that Trijicon?
Use a good pair of binoculars to look at things! Use a scope to shoot things! Reticle being in focus is the most important thing in a scope

Great video, as always!
