@@wsmc8275any of the scopes I own have lifetime warranties so I guess i don’t have that problem. Though I’ve never had to warranty my scopes I’m going to guess that if I had factory information with specs though and that’s what was followed and a scope was damaged, then you should be able to get a replacement. I’ve always used 18 in pounds regardless on rings. ( leupold recommended spec on my rings at least) On large magnums I’ve never had an issue to date.

I have found it can be tricky to mount the modern hunting scopes. I am a novice who has made mistakes mounting scopes but I have also had “gunsmiths” that have mounted scopes for me and brought them back to me in a matter of minutes making me wonder about the quality of the job. Thanks for the info. I am learning from your advice.

Your comment on scope durability along with getting the initial mounting of rings to the base having them set forward is totally spot on. Between those two things I have seen more scope malfunctions/ failures due to stuff moving or getting straight up broke in the last 5 years than I have seen with optics in the rest of my life. A decent scope some people might want to check out if durability is a concern but they still want a more simple scope is the trijicon ascent 3-12x40

A few years ago I purchased a torque driver and started tightening screws as per to specs for the rings but didn’t really take into account the specs for the scope which is the more expensive item. I I didn’t realize loctite or oil increase torque by such a large margin. Thanks for the advice.

I think I’ll just keep using my old “heavy” scopes. Maybe not the highest optical quality with no magic dials but reliable even though I don’t own an inch pound torque wrench. I sight in for maximum effective point blank range and try to keep my shots within that range for whatever cartridge I’m using. No stopping to check notes and turn dials while the target disappears into the underbrush or across a hill. I may have to hold a little above center sometimes but if it’s far enough that I would have to hold over the back of a deer or whatever I’m shooting at, it’s farther than I am willing to shoot, especially with my old eyes. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

It's pretty easy to check your calibration on a wheeler fat wrench if you have a 1/4" Allen L-key and a known weight you can hang on it. You put the L-key in the wrench and hang the weight at a point along the L-key that corresponds to the torque value you want and adjust the torque setting until it just barely clicks over. 3 pounds on the end of a 5 inch L-key is 15 inch pounds. Just be careful because the weight can and will slide off the L-key when the torque wrench clicks over. I have a specific L-key with markings at different points along its length that correspond to different torque values with a weight that I made specifically for this purpose.

I have not yet run into problems by over torquing a scope yet but I do not have any real high end scopes. I am a big Leupold fan and run mostly VX3 models and some VX Freedoms on my truck guns. My biggest complaint with them is the companies lack of models. I’m not happy that you can no longer get any reticle on whatever scope you want and I really hate that they no longer install caps on all turrets. Some turrets don’t even have locking features. A very bad combination for a truck gun

Down here in Oz we tend to go with the cheaper end of the market and put it to hard use e.g. Howa 1500s and VX3s and they work very well. An important area you missed is the trend in rifle versus scope weight - We used to shoot heavier sporter rifles and (relatively) light 1" tube 40mm glass scopes because that was what was available but now the trend is to lighter mountain rifles with carbon stocks and heavier 30mm tube and 50mm glass high power illuminated scopes. This has a big impact on the rings as now have to do a lot more work than in the old days. The modern light rifles are recoiling harder against a heavier inertial load. Now lets add in heavier projectiles, fast twist barrels with hot loads to keep velocity up and then recoil sleds or bipods to make bench shooting / zeroing more comfortable and things are going to happen. Also my experience has always been to torque by feel just snug and then tight about one sixth turn. I have a torque wrench but dont bother using it as it lacks feel. Note I have never had a scope slip or a scope marked but I have had one or two come slightly loose over time which needs checking. Not bragging just saying. Enjoy your channel very much.

The problem is that the younger generation like high magnification scopes and light weight. Young folks are wimpy and lazier than previous generations. I understand that . Im not as tough as the WW2 generation. I like ease and convenience. Rule of thumb for me is 3x magnification for every 100 yards for medium game hunting. The common 3x9 variable scope is good for 300 yards for deer size game and further for elk size game. About 16x is about the most one can use under average field conditions. I love the old steel tube Weaver scopes, but optics were poor by todays standards. Take note that the legendary huters of the past used low powered fix power scopes like 2x to 4x.

Gotta remember to think outside the box. I had a Ruger American 450BM that the scope kept coming loose on and wrecking optics. The factory Ruger supplied base was not machined correctly. It only contacted the action on the outer edges. I acraglass bedded it, used my Warne wrench to torque it down. I also used 3m adhesive spray inside my rings after the fix along with blue loc tite. Fixed the issue.

As I feel it and look more closely, the tube is definitely deformed in one spot. I have shot multiple animals with it on my rifle, all at 200yds or less, and blamed the non-moa accuracy on my own shooting....I wonder if it is the scopes fault after all. :-) Also I have noticed the side focus seems to do absolutely nothing, but I am used to slightly blurry targets as I sometimes have to remove my glasses to get the right eye relief while in the field.

I’ve probably installed thousands of Buhler/Redfield/Leupold mounts and rings on half as many rifles…cause each rifle requires 2 rings. Ive installed so many I don’t need a torque wrench because I have a well calibrated elbow and wrist and j in never over tighten those screws, never had a scope come loose even in some of the heaviest recoiling rifles. Never crushed or ruined a scope either. It has been my experience that a scope will not come loose but you reticle will on the cheaper scopes…and some of the expensive ones. I have and still use a number of old Weaver steel tube scopes and j only have 1 target rifle with an objective lens larger than 44mm. You just don’t need an objective lens larger than 44mm for hunting. There is absolutely no advantage to larger diameter objective lenses. Nuff said!

It's not necessarily the recoil that requires more clamping force on a scope; it's the weight of the scope itself (the inertia of the scope is what causes slippage in rings). As the mass of an object increases, so does its inertia. Most of those old featureless scopes were half the weight of modern scopes with 42-50mm objectives, multiple lens packs, parallax adjustment, and reticle illumination. When scopes started to get over 20oz, more clamping force was required and wider 4-screw rings were needed. The problem is that hunters started demanding lightweight scopes with all of these features, and manufacturers sacrificed durability to satisfy market demand.

@@desertdogoutdoors1113 True, all of it. The problem is people think they need bigger scopes and so the manufacturers make them. Truth be told, the only reason for a powerful scope with an objective lens larger than 44mm is for shooting paper targets. The erector is what dictates the size of the exit pupil, not the size of the tube or the size of the objective lens. A larger objective lens may collect more light but it does not transfer through because of the erector…no matter the size of the tube. That is a myth that has been repeated over and over, kinda like the 6.5 Creedmoor is the magic long range cartridge or any of the PRC cartridges are the swinging dick of cartridges.

question for you , you mentioned the newer leupolds , ziess , swarovski have thinner scope walls , making them easier to bend / break , is it all models of Trijicon and Nightforce that have thicker walls that would make them good hunting scopes or only their high end ones ? like if someone wanted a rugged scope on a deer rifle for beginner hunters that would stand up to accidents ? or someone taking a tumble down the hill an banging up the scope ?

The Nightforce SHV featured in this video IS their budget model, and it's really tough. Trijicon makes the budget priced "Huron Series" scopes (made in Japan), but I never purchased one because the glass is a significant downgrade over scopes in the $1000 price range. I can't give you any first-hand info on the Huron Scopes other than the glass. Stay away from the huge volume of scopes that come out of the same factory in the Philippines; those tend to have durability issues. The toughest budget scopes on the market are the SWFA scopes.

You will need more than that on heavy tactical/target scopes. The more a scope weights, the more grip the system needs on a scope. You need clamping force to overcome the additional inertia. Most modern tactical scopes have tube walls that are almost twice as thick to handle this.
