The ketogenic diet has gained a lot of popularity in the past couple of years. If you’re not quite sure what it is, why it could be beneficial, or you’re well-acquainted with it and just want to learn more, this episode is for you. The ketogenic diet, or keto as it’s called, is a high-fat low carbohydrate diet. While some people take this to mean loads of conventionally raised meat and dairy, the true (and beneficial version) means lots of beneficial fats from things like avocados, nuts and seeds, and coconut; high-quality protein from clean sources like grass-fed meat and pasture-raised eggs; and plenty of non-starchy vegetables. ⁣

To hash out more of the details about keto and how it can support good health, I was excited to talk with my friend and one of the leading voices in the Paleo/Primal and keto movements, Mark Sisson. Mark is the founder of the popular daily health blog, Mark’s Daily Apple, godfather to the Primal food and lifestyle movement, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Keto Reset Diet. His latest book is Keto for Life, where he discusses how he combines the keto diet with a Primal lifestyle for optimal health and longevity. Mark is the author of numerous other books as well, including The Primal Blueprint.⁣

From an almost 66 year old man who only in the past decade got to understanding that the high carb and high sugar diet was what was hurting (destroying) me, I now feel and looking better highly recommend you doing so, not for me, but for all the younglings out there that need a healthy/better real plan to solve their issues and/or to keep them from having those issues that I was all to aware of for too many years that was directly related to the Standard American Diet (SAD)... 👍👍👍👍😃 Note: For what I have learned of late I ended up choosing not to retire; yes, I am still working my job as an Industrial Mechanic. @@witcheater So true Gerald! Our society is filled with fast food, packaged lunches, sugary drinks, and refined starches - we are lacking the nutrients for optimal health! I encounter so many patients in my practice that exercise and believe they are eating healthy - when actually they are eating so many refined foods and wondering why they feel so terrible, can't sleep, have hot flashes, and are gaining weight. Another of Dr Hyman's podcasts talked about "bags, boxes and barcodes" - - - - Don't eat those! That's so true! Whole foods are always going to be the better choice. I'm so glad to hear that you are doing well!! Continue on friend

I think Mark is just a chill, relaxed individual whereas Sisson is more hyper and outgoing. Both individuals here are genuine, good listeners and knowledgeable.

@@YasminA-jm9zs Yasmin , I’ve followed Mark since I met him back when he was the duty doc at Canyon Ranch Spa. I agree with you and I do NOT ever assume any two people are alike . PS Mark doesn’t ‘do Keto ‘ he admits he doesn’t have the discipline . Mark’s energy has significantly declined since his ‘doctors house call ‘ podcasts . He’s visibly aged rapidly . Incidentally in interviews Mark is NOT ‘laid back’ - he interrupts his guests constantly , as his guest finishes a sentence Mark will editorialize on it , not allowing the guest to complete a thought . In this one interview with Sisson , Hyman is clearly so exhausted he actually listens and keeps his editorializing adding his own word salad to his guest because he just clearly doesn’t have the energy . Mark came to functional medicine as a last ditch effort to fix his own failing health . That’s his own words

It's amazing what you forget about when you make a life change. I nodded along to Mark talking about sleeping much better on keto, because I noticed it almost straight away when I started a year ago. What I hadn't realised until he mentioned it was how my body felt when I woke up then compared to now. He said it used to take him half an hour to "warm up" after getting out of bed. I used to have a lot of stiffness too, now I can pretty much jump up and start my day.

I have two sons, they teased me about my weight. They said I should try to get back to the weight that I was living in Asia. Since I never had any health issues due to my weight, I never saw a real problem with it. But when I compared those pictures with what I saw in the mirror, I noticed a huge difference. Without thinking things through, I bet my children that I would lose 22 pounds (or 10 kilos) in three months. I wasn’t sure how to pull this off, but I thought exercise would be the way to go. So, I started to look for KZread videos to watch while I did my workouts. Before long, I came across expert presentations about the ketogenic diet and thought that I would give it a try. Now, I feel great, and when I went for a medical checkup, all of my values were fantastic. My fatty liver disease was gone.

This was not a good discussion for a newbie looking for basic starting information about the ketogenic diet. I'd suggest following "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living" or even "New Atkins" first in order to develop the metabolic machinery discussed. If a newbie with Type 2 Diabetes or Pre-Diabetes thinks that they can start keto eating 50g of carbs a day with occasional cheat meals, they will likely be sorely disappointed. The process of becoming fully "fat adapted" takes more like 12 strict weeks on average per Dr. Phinney, and not simply 4 weeks like Mark Sisson said. Sisson's comment about "a lifetime's quota of sugar" was profound, but I expect few will recognize its significance. Mark's initial stance is that he teaches people that a ketogenic diet means limiting carbohydrates to 50g a day. Dr. Atkins' research on over 50,000 patients revealed that perhaps 2% of his patients could not achieve Nutritional Ketosis after two full weeks eating controlled protein and 20g max total carbohydrates a day. Dr. Volek's research revealed that his study of primarily Type 2 Diabetic patients found that they needed to limit their total carbohydrate intake to approximately 35g of total carbohydrates a day to achieve/maintain Nutritional Ketosis. I doubt that Mark Sisson has ever been over 28 BMI and a lifelong athlete. I think that weight level (and associated body fatness) might be a good cutoff line for following strict keto vs any "less strict" keto discussed here.

I do not believe that there is sufficient evidence to recommend a long term Keto Based Diet which is animal food based as a healthy diet for the public. None of the longest lived and healthiest populations in the world eat a Keto Based Diet. If you do your homework you may find that there may be a problem with long term Keto.

You can get all the protein you need from plant based foods. If you watched the video the recommendation is no more than 20% “protein”, meaning animal based. It was also addressed you can do a vegan version...I think you are missing the “keto point”. However, I am a blood type A and feel terrible on full on, full-time keto and must use a variation diet. I feel equally as poor fasting but don’t feel it’s bad for me. The fats recommended btw are not animal fats...coconut oil, MCT, flax, olive, etc. The science in ketone burning is clear, others versions of keto, not so much.

  • @stevephla

Keto is not necessarily carnivore. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan keto diet plans. But I think Mark Sisson would somewhat agree with you. He actually advocates a more varied approach. The ideal diet may well be a Mediterranean low carb approach with occasional forays into different macro ratios to keep metabolically flexible. What the longest lived populations have in common seems to be low consumption of processed, hyperpalatable food stuffs containing refined carbs and excessive industrial seed oils. There also seem to be variations among ethic populations and even individuals as to what constitutes the best diet. But all seem to benefit from avoiding excessive carbs and PUFAs which drive up oxidative stress, inflammation, and obesity. YMMV. I'm sure we've all known obese "potato chip vegans". Veggie/vegan can be great if done right by those who respond well to it. Paul McCartney is a good example. But he does round out his nutrition with lots of eggs.

Correct. Keto is high fat, doesn’t matter if it’s vegan, carnivore or somewhere in between, it’s high FAT. There is a subset of people (about 1 in 250) that have a genetic issues. A high fat diet, even “healthy fat” would be highly detrimental to their health. It’s shocking that this cookie cutter disinformation is so widespread with no disclaimers for people with FH (familial hyperlipidemia/familial hypercholesterolaemia) or any one of the 2000 variants of PCSK9 mutations.
