Bokuto is on Fukurodani. And we will see more of them in the future. But fun fact, Fukurodani has the word "Fukuro" in it which means owl, and that's why Bokuto kinda looks like an owl. A lot of teams are like this and you might already know this. Karasuno has the word "Karasu" which means crow. Nekoma has the word "Neko" which means cat. And the purple jersey guy, Ushijima, is from Shiratorizawa. "Shiratori" means white bird. Japanese high schools typically don't have mascots, but its cool how this show creates them through the school names.

There's a lot of details and a lot of stuff within the story that maybe doesn't need to be there but just sprinkles a little more seasoning onto a character just ever so slightly so that the entire package just continues to get better and better. Asahi's hairband as an example. It's just a hairband. It's never getting touched upon again... but it still just adds as a kind of extra thing that reinforces the idea that these characters are like real people who can change something about themselves if they get that idea in their head. No need to get confused. Just take it as a funny throwaway thing but it still just adds a bit more of... something, right?

Not to mention that whether you want to or not, you'll usually be dividing most of your attention to the main cast of a show during your first viewing of it, and since Haikyuu has such a large cast aside from our lovely Karasuno Boys, it's easy to misinterpret characters/interactions/plot points outside out them, or skim over a lot of the little nuances, at least.

*To clarify the thing about stopping closing his eyes:* in the beggining of season 1, Hinata couldn't hit the ball. Kageyama told Hinata to stop worrying and just trust him and jump. That's when they hit their first quick. Everyone was looking like "what the hell?!", *not because Hinata hit the ball, but because he had HIS EYES FULLY CLOSED when he did!* He just swung his arm and it hit because Kageyama put the ball exactly where his hand would be. Up until now, they have been doing that. Hinata never opens his eyes and just trusts the ball will be there when he swings. *BUT, if you watch the end of the Aoba Johsai match again, you notice that's EXACTLY WHY THEY LOST.* Hinata had his eyes closed and swung right at their block. The moment he opened his eyes, they had already lost. That's why this is a big deal. Hinata wants to do more than he did up until now. And that might lead him closer to the role of an ace, closer to become like the Little Giant 😉👍

Hey Victoria, just wanted to let you know that the reason that Suga, Kageyama, and Ukai (he was a setter when he was in high school, which is also the reason he kind of had an 'epiphany' when his grandpa said that 'there is no better toss than the one that is "easy for the spiker to hit") kind of 'gave up' on the idea of helping Hinata hit the ball with his eyes open is that they are all setters so they don't really understand how he feels and the points that he is trying to make as a middle blocker. And Oikawa is arrogant/cocky is because he has the skills to back it up. Also in case you didn't notice, Oikawa's camera roll only had one selfie, and a picture of the sunset while the rest were of his nephew prior to Takeru taking the picture of him and Kageyama.

Hinata saying they're "fine" is more to reassure Yachi even if it's not really true. I think that's part of it but not 100%. They do both respect each other deep down and do want to win. Hinata never says a bad word about Kageyama when talking about his setter. I think it more meant, "We're not back yet, but everything is going to be okay with time." The relationship isn't broken, it just needs to rest for a little bit. I don't think either are pretending, they're just not forcing it before it's ready.

I kinda disagree here a little bit. They definitely knew they had issues, and they've acknowledged them, but when Hinata heard that Kageyama was working on a set while he practiced with coach Ukai, he had an unspoken connection, since he's already so close with Kageyama. Essentially, there are still wounds, but both Kageyama and Hinata's strongest communication is their effort in volleyball: to see Kageyama putting constant effort on developing a set that really only Hinata is going to use was essentially as effective as a conversation, and he feels comfortable enough knowing that they'll be back to normal when they get through this.

The reason why the team was on edge after that collision between Hinata and Asahi and after Hinata said "We can't keep doing this," is because they all feel themselves on the verge of stagnation. They all knew that they lost to Aoba Johsai with the power that they have now and feel as if they're not really doing anything to change it up. That's also why Nekomata-sensei (old coach from Nekoma) had that monologue of whether or not Karasuno will choose to evolve or not (made a longer comment on this on the last video haha). Now regarding that collision, it's clear Hinata's greed for self improvement is sending alarm bells throughout the team because while they're debating on whether or not to improve themselves, they know that Hinata will most likely push himself to improvement whether or not they like it, and will most likely leave them behind if they (the rest of the team) stay behind this "safe zone". Also an insight as to why Kageyama, Sugawara, and coach Ukai can't seem to understand Hinata or see Hinata's point of view regarding changing the "freak quick" is because all three of them are setters and didn't understand him when he said that he could see clearly while being in midair. God I'm so glad that you're reacting to these two episodes back to back because I would have cried xD

ngl what I love about Hinata and Kageyama's fight is that neither of them are wrong and neither of them are blaming the other. They both think that the other is doing what they're supposed to be doing perfectly and that the fault lies in themselves, hence why Kageyama keeps blaming his own ability to toss and why Hinata is blaming himself for the loss. The context of this fight compared to their first fights is that now, both of them trust the other wholeheartedly (tho it might not seem like it on Kageyama's side). Hnng character development q-q

Vic remember in 3v3 match in the 1st season the "super quick" that kageyama and hinata use, shoyo closes his eyes because he trusts kageyama to bring the ball to him. We see Karasuno lose to aoba johsai by using the "super quick" so when shoyo talks about keeping his eyes open, he wants to use the "super quick" while keeping his eyes open to "fight on his own in mid air battles"

Also, I don't think that she picked it up yet but Hinata and Kageyama basically have TWO different quick attacks. What the character call the "normal quick", that they developed during the 1st nekoma game when the nekoma MB was blocking all of Hinata's hits. Kageyama sends the ball a bit slower than for the "freak quick" so that Hinata has time to adjust and hit where he wants to. The "freak quick" set is incredibly fast (notice how Hinata's already in the air starting the swinging motion when the ball reaches kageyama's hands) and Hinata is not capable of hitting that if he tries to follow the ball with his eyes, hence the eyes closed. Consider the "normal quick" to be the regular quick attack any MB would hit during a game (That's what Hinata and Kageyama switched to after Lev blocked the freak quick, and that's why Kenma told Lev to switch to a read block. The freak quick is just too fast to be stopped if you're doing a read block, you have to commit to it.)

my interpretation about Hinata "rocking the boat" is that when Hinata collided with Asahi it revealed to the team their complacency. Everyone felt Hinata's ambition and drive to become better, so the team became rocky because they were all confronted with their complacency. Furthermore, Nekoma's sees Hinata's ambition coach ponders whether Karasuno as a team will grow or be consumed by Hinata's greed to be better, this is why Asahi notes that he will be "eaten" by Hinata's drive. This scene is basically a turning point for whether all of Karasuno to grow or stay the same.

There’s a difference though. Hinata isn’t putting himself before the team. He wants to improve individually, yes, but it’s because he knows that he isn’t effective enough on his own to contribute in situations where Kageyama’s technique isn’t enough, and the team is soon going to be facing stronger and stronger opponents who will put them in those kinds of situations more often. So he’s trying to improve for the team’s sake as well as his own, and the reason that it disrupted the team so much is because he realized that they needed evolution before the rest of them did.

@@MasterPpv Exactly. So many people just compare Hinata's situation to Kageyama being not only a selfish but the kind of player that fractures the team before he learnt to be better. Haha that's just how boys are, like when Hinata said he was confident Kageyama would improve as well, they both found a path forward and so even though they couldn't practice together until they'd both improved enough, they each have full faith the other will get there. So they don't need to have an apology moment, they were both correct at the time, and they're focused and moving forward. It's not a heartwarming moment, but it's because they both already understand each other.

I always assumed the point of Asahi's hair changing is to show that Shimizu is talking to them a lot more now. When the show starts Shimizu barely talks because she's pretty shy and introverted but throughout the events of season 1 she starts to come out of her shell and by season 2 they point out several times that she's talking more to them and she seems a lot more committed to doing her best not just as a manager but as a part of the team.

The thing w asahi's hair is a really good detail imo. In many anime the characters' appearance rarely if ever changes which sometimes can feel a little fake. In haikyuu however there are many little details like this that add to the realism like how ppl sometimes just change their hairstyle. Other examples would be noya's hair falling down when wet, the fact that coach ukai has ear piercings but he always takes them out when coaching (you can see the little holes in his earlobe in some scenes), ppl having different a hair colour/ hairstyle in flashbacks etc, etc. I think its pretty amazing that they do that bc most ppl won't notice or care for some of those details but it really helps ground these characters in reality and I think the show should be praised for going there since most shows don't really bother w that kind of stuff

I addressed this in another reply, but my personal thought is that it actually shows another personality trait to asahi outside of volleyball itself. I think asahi actually puts a fair amount of thought into how he presents himself, not in a vain way. But just in general, he has his style and he has purposeful thoughts behind how he wants his style to represent him. It's subtle and the very few instances of it showing up are framed in jokes like in s1 & him explain how he goes for a "wild" feel and then s2 the switch to the headband because of "balding". An even smaller take away to consider is that the tight hair bun is a concern that could be a contributing factor to hair loss, add that to the fact that he plays sports and the easier option would be to actually just get a haircut so it doesn't get in his way and he won't have to pull it back into the bun. But instead he likes his hair long, it's part of his style so he just works around it. While I cannot remember if they address it when later in the series he goes back to the bun it is something to note that asahi is the only one that changes his hairstyle. It's small details, but once you realize his career of choice in the future, the little quirks suddenly slot into place. We as the audience have better insight to all the characters because a have a more omniscient view, but we still only get to really see the characters much in the same way they get to see eachother, as volleyball teammates, and specifically we revolve primarily around hinata. We don't dive deeply into their regular lives, what their personal likes & dislikes are in general outside of volleyball. And we don't know the little details of the characters unlike their friends probably do. There's a chance daichi & suga probably were not surprised with asahi's career choice but as an audience that only got to see him as a volleyball sempai it probably made people do a double take or go "really?" But then you go back and look at the little details and it kinda makes sense. A bigger example of a character with an interest outside of volleyball is kenma. we know he loves gaming, it set up from the get go. It's likely his inquisitive gaming mindset works in how he observes volleyball players mid-match to plan his moves accordingly. But what else do we know about kenma's love for games? What genre does he prefer? Fighting, rpg, rhythm? Retro style or newest 3d art style? Horror or fantasy adventure or modern? Turn-based rpg or real time fighting rpg? Nothing, we know nothing except he loves gaming. But it's not surprising when we learn what he does in the future because it's enough to know he loves gaming.

Die-hard Haikyuu fan here (who has seen the anime multiple times and is shamelessly addicted to watching first-time reactions to it)--don't feel pressured at all. It's actually super cool seeing you experience Haikyuu from the very beginning. On top of how exciting the matches are, the actual writing and character development are super intricate and beautifully done. It's hard sometimes to fully understand a show like this with the first-time watch-through, especially if you're not as familiar with some of the cultural references. All of your HHH's can see the effort and love you're putting into it, and we LOVE to see it! Great job, keep it up!! Can't wait to relive the rest of the show with you!

Something to keep in mind this episode is that Kageyama, Sugawara, and the coach are all setters, which is why they can't really get Hinata's perspective as a spiker. Remember Coach Neko's old analogy that Kageyama is an ogre and Hinata is his club? Hinata doesn't want to be just a tool, he wants to grow and contribute as a player as well.

@@sharlesdaviskendy2391 Oh yeah haha, but the thing is that Oikawa obviously doesn’t like himself for almost doing that too, so I don’t personally completely blame him for that scene. Like hitting is bad of course and for the moment he really DID want to hit Kageyama and it wasn’t even actually any hatred towards Kageyama, it was a lot of frustration with himself and just like... no don’t go smacking people that literally have no control over YOUR own personal issue ahdgshsvb. But Oikawa does realize this and it was definitely a subconscious drive that made him almost do it and I’m sure he’s relieved that he didn’t actually hit Kageyama. As a third year he’s grown a lots since then, is a lot more confident, and does have legitimate passion for volleyball, growth, and improvement so yea I’m particularly fond of him now but I know there’s some valid discussions about the Oiks almost smacking Kageyama scene.

  • @vdinh143

Here's what's going on. Hinata bumped into Asahi, but you forget to ask "why". The reason is because he's so immersed in trying to get better that he becomes greedy for the ball (which is metaphorical for opportunities to improve) and blind to everything else. That's why the Nekoma coach commented "is it time for his evolution?" He was able to see the desire for change in Hinata, and he commented (appropriately) that every step of progress begins with such a desire, i.e. you can't get something without wanting it. But wanting something is also a double-edged sword for obvious reasons (one of which is portrayed via the collision). Hinata wanting to hit the freak-quick with eyes open is his solution to "how do I get better and conquer the block?" It's not that Hinata can't hit the freak-quick with his eyes open, it's that the freak-quick itself is not hittable with eyes open. For that quick, Kageyama does a direct delivery that goes at maximum speed to get to the contact point as quickly as possible to meet with Hinata's hand which is already swinging as the toss happens. There is no time for deliberation on Hinata's part. That's why he (and everyone else) will miss that hit if they take the time to choose *how* to hit.

Since the beginning Hinata has been jumping with his eyes closed because he was distracted and Kageyama told him not to look at rhe ball, but Hinata took it to mean he needed to close his eyes. It worked, thanks to Kageyama's pinpoint accuracy. But lots of people have been able to stop it because once you get used to it Hinata is easy to stop as he hits blindly. So he want to do the freak quick but with his eyes open, which will change the dynamics of the attack. Because when he opens his eyes, he jumps lower, distracted by the ball, by the block, by the defenders, by the other players etc. So yes, this is something major. 😂😂

Don't sweat not picking everything up immediately. Some things take time to unfold over an episode or two - you understood the friction in these episodes well enough as they went on. Plus, for someone who's unfamiliar with anime I can imagine there's an extra degree of processing. The translation is usually sufficient, but anime does have its own cinematic and storytelling conventions, whether it's a subtle expression, a cultural behaviour, a visual gag, etc. Those of us who are used to anime can probably interpret meanings or motivations a little quicker because we know the tropes and how they tend to build up scenes and storylines. Perfect example is Asahi going bald lol. Just character banter rather than any kind of plot.
