I already commented this under coach Donny's reaction to S2E22 but I'm gonna leave a comment here as well. I absolutely love the interaction between Yamaguchi and Hinata when Yamaguchi comes in: Hinata says "Get 10 points!", Yamaguchi replies "That would end the game." and then Hinata responds "I would forgive you." I love this because it gives us some pretty important insight into Hinatas mind and why he wants to win. Obviously he wants to fulfil his and his senpais dream of going to nationals. But that's not the main reason. The main reason is that he just wants to stay on the court as long as possible and he knows that if they keep winning they get to play another game. If they keep winning they get to play more volleyball. That's his ultimate motivation.

12:39 “Makki is a cute name” YEAH!! And his full name is Hanamaki Takahiro!! That’s literally such a pretty sounding name and Makki in the fanbase is often associated with 🌸 cause his name means “precious flower roll” and also cause of his pinkish brown hair (though it looks a bit more brown in the anime rather than the manga)! But yeah Oikawa does give his teammates nicknames like “Iwa-Chan” “Mattsun” “Makki”- whether they’re all close enough friends for nicknames or if Oikawa just likes to be an annoyance we might never know for sure (though it’s probably a mix of both hahaha)

he is both annoying and he wants to seem cute. in all fairness, it makes sense for Oikawa and Iwaizumu to call each other by first names since they've known each other since childhood, but they probably switched to family names sometime in late middle school, early high school, because being on first name basis has weird cultural connotations for two young boys (maybe not in tokyo as much, but in sendai? maybe??)

One of my favourite things about episode 22 is the way they set up a premise. The premise of this episode is that the Serve is a powerful attack that can't be blocked. For the majority of the episode that is Karasuno's saving grace as Yamaguchi's serve gives them the lead. Then the serve goes back around to Oikawa and their coach says the same thing. The Serve is a powerful attack that can't be blocked. Even though it is different players and different serves, the audience has their expectations reversed. That thing that was saving Karasuno has been turned against them and they lose the set. It's amazing how that episode made me love the serve, and then dread it.

I like haikyuu but that's not the case at all, receiving is very swkward in haikyuu in most recycled scenes. The players look like they're just standing there but that's only because animating every single player for every single play is too much work for the animators, that's exactly why every serve looks the same and most spikes are the same form and technique. Its just the limits of animation unfortunately.

Hey, so about phrases in english like "Nice Receive!" and "Block", by the time stuff like western sports, computers and food and all that arrived to Japan they were already mostly in English. So many of the words and expressions were adopted into japanese (it even has a whole different alphabet for these words). However, since they're foreign words, they were also adapted into their way of speaking and particularly of writing in this other alphabet. Many sounds in English don't really exist in the Japanese tongue, so in this adaptation the pronunciation got fairly distorted in some cases. If you're curious, this second alphabet is called katakana, while the one they use for common japanese is called hiragana.

Just adding to this, Japanese has words called English loan words. Basically there are words that sound English because 1) historically they didn't originally have that word and it was brought from a different country back in the day and 2) the word is not compatible with the sounds of their language. There are many languages that have sounds and pronunciations that don't exist in other languages, so many have to make-do lol Example of English loan words are orange (orenji), grey (gurei), soup (supu), wine (wien), apartment (apaato).

As a bilingual, I learnt both my native language and English growing up. When I'm talking to my school friends in my native language, we'll use several English words. Even when we're communicating in English we'll use some words from our language because it makes communicating easier. For them to say "nice receive" in English is easier than saying it in Japanese. There is also a probability that there just isn't a literal translation for those words in Japanese, or it means entirely something else.

just remembering that in japan, in a game with only 3 sets, the tie break set goes up to 25 points, not 15. Only in championship finals, where it is a game of 5 sets, the tie break set goes up to 15 points.

Something that I love in Yamaguchi's run that I feel sometimes gets overlooked is the reaction of the 3 Seijoh fangirls to his first point. They've witnessed Guchi's work and effort to get to this point, and they're just as excited and thrilled for him as Karasuno. Everyone in that arena celebrated his redemption this episode, and it was so incredible.

usually when a character who's good at receiving (like noya, daichi, or kageyama) isn't able to receive a ball well even when they're in the right place for it, it's to show the opponent was just THAT good, and often, that the hit was ferociously strong and powerful. so it's not like, "why didn't you get this, noya!!!" and more like, "holy cow, the hit was so powerful NOYA couldn't get it????" i think that's one of the reasons noya's form breaks when he's digging something super powerful -- more for visual effect of showing that the spike or serve was so strong his form is broken by the impact. but also, being a libero who's hard on yourself for not being able to be perfect... ahh vic, you should be kinder to yourself! 🥺 as coach points out way back in season 1, there is NO WAY noya could save every ball; they're hurtling at car-down-the-highway speeds around the court. professional liberos aren't always able to save everything either, even when they're in the right position, because the players they're up against are just that good. it's impossible for anyone to save everything, and you are still a phenomenally talented player despite that. NO ONE can save them all, not even the best in the world. 💖

The Japan men's nacional team actually watched haikyuu, the younger ones at least. There are interviews where they talked about how important the manga/anime was to inspire them, and Nishida even said that Tanaka was his favourite character. I'm not 100% sure, but I think I heard someone say that men's volleyball clubs in Japan were being shut down because the interest in the sport was going downhill, and after the manga came out, the interest skyrocketed and that how Japan men's national team kept the high level

The japanese language is designed to borrow words from other languages. One of the alphabets is specifically used to spell out words from other languages even though all the sounds are the same as the main alphabet. They're saying what you hear as an English "nice receive" but they're actually saying in Japanese "naisu reshibu". They also love borrowing English words in particular, so this actually happens a lot.

Some reminders: After the season 2, there is an extra 6 minutes scene that you can search on youtube(because it's not included in episode 1-25. There are also extra few minutes scenes in s1 and 3) and also few OVAs that you might want to watch. OVAs that you can watch after season 2 is: - Haikyuu!!: Lev Genzan! (The arrival of Haiba Lev) - Haikyuu!!: vs. Akaten(vs. Failing grades) These two are OVA 1 and 2, you can watch them together if you want to 😄. And another OVAs that you can watch is: - Haikyuu!!: Riku vs. Kuu (Land vs Air) - Haikyuu!!: Boru no Michi (The volleyball way) It would be nice to watch these two together, they focus more on other teams such as Nekoma(Kenma and Kuroo's team=cats) and Fukurodani(Akaashi and Bokuto's team=owls). ✨Haikyuu season 2 episode 25 and the OVAs have post credit scenes.

The "nice receive" is probably (just a theory though I'm not sure of it) due to the fact it's the kind of sport where words are used a certain way regardless of the country (here in english). For example in judo regardless of the country everyone says "mate" and "hajime". Also when it comes to fencing at the beginning of a "duel" they always say "en garde!" regardless of the country. It may also simply be due to the fact USA heavily influenced sports in Japan (baseball for example is very popular in their country).

Actually, it's true! In my whole high school years, I played volleyball and we always shout "NICE" whenever someone received the ball in a critical situation or received it perfectly. English words are much more shorter so it's more convenient. We don't really say the whole "nice recieve", we say " nice!" "Yes" "Yon!" (In my language) It has nothing to do with anyone's influence on volleyball, but the words used for cheering are usually the shorter ones

I got really touched when you say, "But I guess no player is perfect, you know:)". I have made a great effort to learn that not be too hard on myself and not be so hard on anyone else. In Haikyu's story, everyone is still just a high school student, Noya can't pick up every ball, Oikawa can't combine power and accuracy in every serve. But they are also aware that they can become even greater in the future. The imperfections now don't stop them from being called "good players". I think it's the same for you, too(and also for myself), we don't have to be perfect to be satisfied with ourselves.

In the Japan-Canada game, Takahashi, the player who did the 'fake-hit into a set' is only 19. Ishikawa, the person he set it to is normally the one that does it and actually ended up doing it in the last rally to win the game. Ishikawa plays in Italy and is the Men's team's best player (his sister also plays for the Women's team), so it's really cool to see how his influence is extending to the younger players. Takahashi for example is still in University, or just out of it.

Hey Vic! Just here to quickly answer some small questions you had in the episode! No, Yamaguchi wasn’t “bugging” Coach Ukai. It was essentially meant to be sort of a “unspoken” moment between them where the energy and vibe he was giving off of wanting to be put in was so strong that Ukai could sense it even with just the tiniest glance, with no words needed. It was such a strong “Put me in Coach, put me in!” vibe that Coach was basically like, “Oh shut up, I know lol” And yes, Tsukki did smile a bit, very privately. He really wants his one friend that he truly cares about and trusts 100 percent to shine as much as possible. You can see they had a close up on his face when the set was coming in, and he was concentrating and a lot more focused than he normally is when playing. He wanted to make absolutely sure that he got that spike through so that his buddy could get even just one more chance to serve. So when it lands, they get the point, and he gets the ball back, he smiles a bit, just privately to himself, before passing the ball back for the next serve, because HE got to make sure his friend stayed on the court for one more play.

By the way, when Nishinoya messes up it doesn't just mean that even great players mess up, it's also a sign to show just how strong and skilled the opponent is, when players like Kageyama or Nishinoya mess up.(Of course there's always room for improvement in everyone~ :D )

Normally Ishikawa is the one who likes to do that stuff, but it seems like he's been teaching the others, and Ran is a sponge who keeps learning and improving from everyone around him. The look of satisfaction on their faces after they scored was priceless.
