the joke of "they are kids but they are older than you" is because they would be younger than Victoria in the show but when you look up the character's info, they were born before her. As if you are watching an old video of someone.

Yeah, Hinata, Kageyama, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi, the first years, are born in the year 1996. So they are technically 25 this year. Older than Victoria.

I love how you didn't show a hint of hate towards Tsukki's brother. (A lot of reactors really misinterpret this scene and just hates on the brother without fully understanding Tsukki and Akiteru's relationship). Akiteru's "betrayal" wasn't what made Tsukki how he is now but because he SAW HOW HARD his brother worked YET he didn't achieve anything because there are so much more better people than his brother. He loves volleyball so much that he LIED to his younger brother. It explains Tsukki's whole ideology of why he hated Hinata at first (in S1) because of his "needless passion" (which makes him very similar to Akiteru as well). As he mentioned in this episode, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMEONE BETTER, so why try, showing how traumatized he was and how he actually empathized with his brother rather than hate on him.

I feel that the other version for "But for me, it felt like that was everything my big brother stood for. In the end, it made my brother tell pointless lies" translated to "but it was everything to my brother" was the source of the misunderstanding. Because the latter makes it seem like even Kei thought that Akiteru acted out of self-preservation, when the situation was in fact that Kei was regretting sort of forcing his brother to put up a front.

I just moved on thinking it was a small lie gone big. I never knew ppl hated on the big brother 😐

The “I won’t lose to him” is not wanting to be the best on the team. I believe this is customary to Japan dynamics and it means acknowledging one’s strength and wanting to stand just as strong beside them. Yes, there’s competition but I wouldn’t say that it’s vicious in any way

Yes, and following on from this, I interpret the line as also meaning, "I want to improve and get better", as opposed to "I want X person to suck/be worse than me". How you frame it makes a big difference. :)

BEAUTIFUL FACT: As Yachi mentioned the “Hi” (日) on Hinata means sun ☀️ and the “Tsuki” (月) In Tsukishima means moon 🌙 , but on the haikyuu characters guide manga, Furudate-Sensei mention, that he chose Tsukishima’s name to be “Kei” (蛍) written with the Kanji of Firefly. Because even so the moon 🌙 only reflects the Sun’s ☀️ Light, he wanted to show that Tsuki can also SHINE BY HIMSELF 💛

More than that, I think Hinata reminds Tsukki of his OWN brother seeing how disadvantaged Hinata is but he keeps pushing on (the same way his brother did). Hinata is short and Akiteru joined the team when Karasuno had so much members. Both were at a disadvantage but both had that "needless passion" to push forward. It's something that Tsukki (as seen in this episode very much in his dialogue) despises. Seeing people try so hard when sometimes, you don't achieve anything from it. I don't think Tsukki's character would despise the "Little Giant" because he "stole" his brother's position. (Akiteru wasn't even in the bench so Little Giant really didn't steal his brother's position) so it's really more of the fact that Hinata's passion is the same as his brother. (So happens, Hinata's efforts bear fruit while Akiteru didn't much).

It's honestly hillarious from an outsider perspective because Tsuki is naturally tall, been playing volleyball for years, has someone in the family who can guide him, and is analytical and intelligent. While we have Hinata who is naturally short, who didn't even have a team much less a guide, and is a derpy puppy human. When Tsuki goes I wish was as naturally blessed as Hinata everyone is like um bro where???? Only Yams gets it that's why he's the perf person to yell at him 👌

Actually I think in the beginning of the series, before Hinata started to get good, Tsukki didn't like him because Hinata trying so hard despite being so disadvantaged was a huge reminder to the pain that his own brother went through in high school

“Rivals” in anime/in Japan are more about finding people to grow and improve with as a role model or equal. In the US, “rivals” as a term is generally meant as like… sworn enemies in a competition, but, in Japan, having a rival on your own team is like a (usually positive) form of social comparison. “They can do this so I need to train more and get back on their level!” That sort of thing. It’s someone you can usefully observe, work with, and learn from, while also giving you clearly obtainable goals and visible benchmarks for success and improvement you can compare to. It can be a very growth-mindset-friendly thing! 😊

Exactly. Or as Takeda-sensei says, "Do you see the other team as enemies, or as great players you can learn from?". One of the reasons Takeda-sensei worked so hard to reestablish ties with Nekoma is so that they could scrimmage with the top Tokyo-area teams, some of the best in the country. Because you learn best by surrounding yourself with people who are better at something than you. The rivalry within Karasuno definitely falls into the mode of motivating each other. When you see your teammates giving their all, trying new things, challenging themselves, you get inspired to do the same...to keep up. You don't want to look like a slacker.

I think when talking about age, the comments are referencing where the characters are in the books rather than the show, because the show is yet to catch up to the books. I'm not entirely sure though. Edit: Additionally, the first years are 15-16, second years 16-17 and third years 17-18.

Yeah that's correct. It's also probably referring to the fact that they have canon years they were born. Since the series takes place in 2012, the first years were mostly born in 1996, the second years in 1995 and the third years in 1994. If Victoria is 24 now, she would've been born in 1996 or 1997, making her younger than most of the players. Edit: Apparently Victoria was born at the end of April 1997, which makes her younger than all the players in the series, as the youngest of them were born in March of that year.

The flow of time in stories are not at all related to how time passes irl. I can say Alice in Alice in Wonderland is an adorable child even though her character was written in the 1800s and she would be geriatric 😭😭 no one would be like “but Chaeyoung’s Bestie, she’s actually like nearly 160 yrs old why are u calling her a child”

in the show, the characters would be younger than you because Haikyu!! takes place in 2012-2013 while they’re all high schoolers, but if they were aged up to 2021 they would be a couple years older than you (all of the first years are only year older than you)

It's pretty crazy how Tsukki is technically just a supporting character, but he's still better written and has better character growth than like 95% of main characters from other anime. He's like a case study of how you write a truly compelling character.

I genuinely love Tsukki’s development and it’s on the top of my list of redemption arcs in really any anime. Maybe it’s cause I looked up to my older brother so much but it feels so real and genuine and I love him he is best boy

i love the tiny details in this show. Tsukki having all of his introspective thoughts at night, the moon hiding behind the clouds when he starts spiralling and then coming out again when Yamaguchi yells at him. Also I totally agree about baby Tsukki being the cutest thing!! The grin + peace sign at his big brother, the pouty faces when he tells white lies and also the literal moon merch sweatshirt!! :,)

About the whole thing about the players being older than you. The series takes place in 2012, so hinata (who is a freshman) was born in 1996, and the third years were born in 1994. So basically in 2021, hinata would be turning 25. Let that sink in....

The fact the the 3rd year would be about 27-28 physically hurts. And the timeline lining up with current events is amazing.

A "straight" in the show is when you hit the ball "straight" down the sideline. You can see it in the brief flashback scene following the explanation with the arrows.

When people talk about ages, it might be good to mention that the Haikyuu story takes place in 2012! That’s the year the story was first put into publication. So since Hinata is a first year high school student, he is 15-16 years old in 2012. As of May 25 2021, Hinata is technically 24 years old and will be turning 25 in June :) Hope that helps!

The reason his brother didn't tell him is like he said he was trying to believe it himself. But also remember what they said about the ace in earlier episodes. The complete and utter pride you have when you are the ace. And then imagine you go from that to not even being good enough to stand on the same court no matter how much you work

Tsukki’s moment will come, but keep in mind. He’s a very subtle person who rather keeps to himself and is highly logical. You might not see the big moment immediately, but it will come with some hints here and there until it hits you like a truck. Stay tuned for that *moment* vic! Because it will come!

So, a bit of an explanation for their ages: The character's ages are around *15-16 for 1st years* (Hinata, Kags, Tsukki, Yamaguchi, Yachi), *16-17 for the 2nd years* (Noya, Takonga, Narita, Ennoshita and Kennoshita), and *17-18 for the 3rd years* (Daichi, Suga, Asahi, Kiyoko) while you're watching the anime. Technically they have canon birthdates, so if you were to calculate their ages currently in 'real world' time, they're between 25-27 ish? _(I know Suga's is June 13th, 1994, so he'd be 26 right now)_ Hope that helps clear things up!

The reason why Tsukki's brother Akiteru was off court is because Japan allows only 12 players on court (6 regulars and 6 bench players for switching), one manager and coaches. All the other team members of the volleyball club have to be off court, and since Karasuno's VB team was very big at the time, Akiteru wasn't on court because all the players required for that match were already on court!

7:25 To answer your question, yes currently the characters are in high school, but I believe the story takes place in 2012. Most of the characters are actually born in between 1994-1996. Since you're 24, I'm assuming you were born in either 1996 or 1997. So technically some of the characters ARE older than you, but you don't actually see that in the current story. The Haikyuu anime is based on the manga, which is a type of Japanese comics. The manga has more story to it than the anime at the moment(it actually ended around March 2020!). So the characters are actually in their 20s in the manga so that's also why a lot of people say they're older than you. 🤣 Hope this helps!

In anime it’s very common maybe even the norm to have rivalry’s, whether it’s your teammate or your enemy. It’s a sign of respect that I think is part of Japan’s culture so you don’t need to worry about them being mad at each other or anything like that it just shows that they respect each other and that they want to grow so that they can be on the same level or become greater. Honestly I admire it because thanks to that rivalry, our crows have become so much better.😊

Have to say, loved him from the very first appearance. Every shonen needs this kind of character to balance the excited fired up ones out. For some people, laid-back demeanor is more relatable and seeing just raw energy on screen gets tiring.

Karasuno players are 15-18 years old, since they're still in high school. Since Japanese high school is 3 years, the first years (Hinata, Kageyama, Tsukki, Yamaguchi, Yachi) are like sophomores in US high school. The third years are seniors.

Yeah. Yachi’s ships are normally with either Hinata, Yamaguchi, or Kiyoko, so it’s definitely funny and weird to see someone mention Asahi x Yachi. XD

I love how Haikyuu has many great visual representations like a poem. Like how Hinata and Tsuki is represented as 'Sun' and 'Moon' ,its really beautiful. It just shows how each of them though different,has their own light to shine and both are important. And btw,great vid Victoria,I love it.Keep it coming. Love the hype for Tsuki here,let's continue this hype more for the more amazing scenes to come :)

Yeah, it's definitely a respect thing. They compete with each other because they respect the other person's strengths and the rivalry consists of them fighting harder to be on each other's level. In season one, when Suga and Kageyama played against each other during the scrimmage with the Neighborhood team, they said, "I won't lose" and it was a sign of respect, saying they will go their absolute hardest against each other and nothing less, because they deserve nothing less. It's the same here, when Gucci asks if Hinata sees Tsukki as a rival. Tsukki doesn't see himself as a rival for Hinata, but Hinata is immediately like "Hell yeah, he's a rival! He's got everything I don't so I have to work hard to match up!"

hey there internet stranger! awesome job becoming valedictorian, you say it like it's nothing but it's something really special to achieve. :) i know you didn't ask but here are some speaking tips that i've developed for myself over years and years of speaking and performance with anxiety. (these help me but they're not guaranteed to help you. if you find anything that works, stick to it and you'll be ok) - first and foremost, eyes are not on you. the random kids in attendance aren't going to want to listen to you and that is okay. because that means you are fully in control of what they see. you are not being judged, you are not being analyzed, and you are not being pressured to perform. however much it may feel that way, know that any expectations you feel are coming from yourself. you can rise to them. - rehearse! this might seem pretty bland but knowing where you tend to stumble or something feels off in your word choice can be so helpful to feel more confident. it's not about being better at saying your speech-- it's about being in tune with it, and knowing how it feels to speak it. - last but not least, learn to refocus. especially if you're anxious, your mind WILL wander as you speak. you'll search for things in the crowd, think about random embarrassing memories, etc etc. you are, at some point, going to feel lost while you're speaking. with experience you learn to keep talking as you mentally get back on track, but it may be hard right now. that's why you prepare for this. give yourself spaces during the speech where you can stop for a very short breather, realign yourself with your speech, optionally strike a pose* and continue on. i hope these help you tomorrow! good luck on your speech and with anything that may come your way :) *ps. for legal reasons, this is a joke.

to give more context abt tsukki's story, in the manga yamaguchi clearly pointed out that when tsukki said "lame" it wasn't for his brother. tsukki maybe was pertaining to himself or maybe in the way he got invested to volleyball, he said he got so wrapped up in it and it made his brother feel like he had to lie to him. so his brother lying wasn't really the issue, the root of tsukkis hesitation/indiffrerence for vball was tsukki saw all the effort and hardwork from his brother but it resulted to nothing he witnessed how his brother suffered bcuz he got so invested in vball. thats the reason hes holding himself back.

I personally think the competition among the team members **is** part of the team culture. I think Karasuno has a good balance of being competitive with and supportive of each other; they push each other in the team and even the players of the opposing team to constantly improve and be better and I think that's beautiful. Understandably, if the levels become unbalanced and they get too caught up in the competition and allow envy to grow, it's going to be bad for them but again, I think Karasuno has a healthy level of competition in their team which mostly allows them to grow and develop both their individual and team skills.

Kei and Tobio are my favorite back storys and have the best character developments... (although Kageyama's story makes me cry more😅💔)

Victoria, misunderstood what Bokuto meant with "straight". He meant straight down the line (not straight down), as opposed to a cut shot (cross). 😂

Tsukishima's redemption arc is one of the best, if not the best storyline in Haikyuu.

It’s episodes like these when I kinda wish she was watching in dub😩 Very much missing out on “aye you, skinny” and “it’s tsukishima” “fine then, tsuki-badada”
