In retrospect, the U.S. being robbed from the winning goal against Slovania is what essentially gave this goal the significance it has; had they won the Slovania game this game would have not been a must win for us. Out of all of the U.S. players, I am so happy that Landon Donovan scored this goal. He is an amazing player and he is the leader of our team (along with Dempsey).

If the US had 4 points going into this game, they would still need a draw or better in this match to make sure they made it into the round of 16. They couldn't exactly have rested their starters because England played Slovenia at the same time. If England wins their game, they have 5 points, if Slovenia wins, they have 6 (if they had lost to the US). 4 points is not a guarantee to make the round of 16 but 5 points pretty much is.

I remember this game and this goal. This was the first World Cup I ever really watched and cared about. At the time I was 10 years old. I remember watching nervously and then when Donavan scored, me and my little brother (8yo) were screaming and jumping and tearing apart the living room, crying and celebrating. Called my dad on the home phone while I was at work; “DID YOU SEE THAT?!” I cried to him. Even though this squad was sadly knocked out later on, I will always consider this World Cup and this match what made me interested in our great sport to this day. I don't think it was much of a heartbreak for Algeria, since a 0-0 draw would also see them finish last in that group. Quite a heartbreak for us, Slovenian fans, especially since our game has already finished by the time Donovan scored for a narrow win. Oh well, I can always hope we'll once get a chance like this to get to the knock-out stage. :)

It was a heartbreak for Algeria..because if you watched that game, their entire plan was to park the bus and f the US out of advancing. They were playing negative all night long with 10 behind the ball and just trying to draw the game. That strike by Dempsey/Donovan basically ripped their heart out. Everyone watching that game was shocked how Algeria could play like that given that they could of advanced with a win.

An utterly thrilling and magical goal. Donovan just had the right stuff. This is sealed in legend now.
Never in my life will I forget this moment. I was deployed to Afghanistan at the time watching this game with other service members at Bagram Airbase. It was absolute chaos there when Landon scored this goal.
ok, ok. I have now seen it all. 2010 in Africa was a glimpse for the future for the USMNT. I am an American. I was very upset when Landon Donovan was left out of the 2014 roster. We had some awesome moments, right? Tim Howard was fantastic, as always. Clint Dempsey had the 5th fastest goal of all time. We learned that Jermaine Jones has a ton of potential, and that our bench is full of flare, with some "wow!" moments from John Brooks, to Julian Green. We have a lot of potential! How can someone say that the USMNT is horrible. We haven't won a World Cup, but Italy, Spain, and England all got out in the Group Stages. We lost to Germany 1-0, and Brazil (5 time world cup winners) lost 7-1 without Neymar Jr. and Thiago Silva! That just shows how bad or good a team is, if they lose one or two great players. Do they crumble? Do they prevail? Well, in this case, they did not. And one more point. The USA is the 23rd best team in the world. We held BELGIUM, the 4th best in the world to a 2-1 loss. I think that the USMNT has a ton of potential. We got out of the group of death, and gave a lot of teams a scare and a shock in the World Cup. #ibelieve #usmnt Get ready for 2018, here comes the USMNT!

xxxhairmetalxxx We also have the Parker brothers who are USMNT hopefuls as well. There's Gyau also and Nagbe.
Why this in my quarantine recommendations?
i still get goosebumps watching this!
Yup... Still gives me goosebumps.

Oh dear god yes "Sleepy Eyes" ref who looked like he was on heroin and favored Ghana greatly when they played against the US but it was enjoyable to see them get revenge on Ghana 4yrs later and to see them booted out of the group knockout....see ya!!!

OH and what about the Sloveina match?!?! Total bias against the US.I thought there was a lot of bad ref calls in 2010 WC not as bad as the 2002 WC

I consider this as my motivation video it just became what my reality had to become in life and that goal was just something special.
Watching the ascend of the USMNT after 1994 and the best years from 2002-2010 was simply amazing. I MISS THIS DIVERSE AND WONDERFUL TEAM!

IMO, if you're not absolutely sure, don't call it! It isn't like the game is high-scoring as it is. Freezing it at the touch, I have to agree, it looks onside.

+Iamadam offsides were instilled so players wouldn't just stand next to their goal waiting for the ball to come to them from the other side of the pitch. Such minimal margins (especially if unsure) should be left onside

well, I think that's what he's trying to do. Bring in new people. Some young, but some old players to be leaders. Jurgen is trying develop players for the future. Give the young players experience(in the World Cup). Gonna miss Donovan nonetheless.

Could've used Landon this time around. Our offense was non-existent. Don't know what Klinsman was thinking relying so heavily on a oft injured Jozy.
Never forget waking up early that summer day. 1st ⚽️ game I had ever seen and have been a follower of the USA 🇺🇸 ever since!!!!!! Can’t wait for QATAR!!!!!
I will watch this and cry with joy til the day I die.

This moment and USWNT getting to the final a year later is what got me into soccer. Started watching EPL (then BPL) a year later and attended my first MLS match (Philadelphia Union vs Montreal Impact). Been a season ticket holder since 2017.

One of the happiest moments in my sports watching career. Lol. I still remember hugging random people at the bar. Would be amazing if the men could ever win a WC....
