US Plans ‘Twist & Tweak’ Missile To Counter Russian & Chinese Hypersonic Missiles Amid Ukraine War

The US Air Force has revealed a new concept that could potentially increase the chances of scoring a hit in air-to-air combat. The USAF said that it’s testing a new missile capable of twisting in flight to hit highly-manoeuvrable targets accurately. The concept involves utilising an air-to-air missile with a nose that bends to reach the target quickly before it can escape. Watch the video to find the real reason for developing a missile which could manuvere mid-flight.

I realized a few years ago (from documentaries, books, podcasts, but no service) that western weapons are only beaten by a network of tunnels, as was done in Vietnam. I never dreamed that trench warfare was still relevant, as I do not recall it being used in WW2, although I bet it was, but I just don't recall the references having downplayed the significance and forgot such references. A net of underground resupply tunnels for say Bakhmut would make it nearly impossible to break. My mind needs time to process your afrl anti trench warfare, and how this could tip the power. This plus a super fast tunnel digging machine technology could change warfare. I am still trying to run through scenarios and process this information. The other game changing tech would be a way to derail trains from hundreds of miles away. If you cut off the trains, Russia would fold in days At the very least, it would slow down the killing - - probably on both sides.

To defeat most intercepting systems, a hypersonic missile should have the ability to glide without any propulsion so that there won't be heat, sound waves to detect. That is, I say make them in such a way that their final stage before hitting their targets will be like dropped bombs.

Without built in "propulsion",, the projectile itself merely becomes "a falling object" subject to the gravitational laws of physics. It would immediately lose velocity (even moving downward) slowing it down to simply maintain,, according to it's overall weight,, "terminal velocity" of the projectile itself. Built in propulsion as is the case with all rockets/missiles,, give an inanimate object the ability to maintain a built in velocity by the design it's makers had in mind. I'm confidant all I just said you have to already know & while your hypothesis is admirable as a thought,, you just didn't think it all the way through?

The US is already putting in place a system that specifically detects any hypersonic missile movement anywhere on the earth's surface. The hypersonic's weakness is only being faster than the speed of sound but not the speed of light. The US is years ahead of any country when it comes to having a more power direct energy system with greater accurate precision. It's harder to detect light in which it's too late for any hypersonic to react to it within a flash. Hypersonic being physical will be it's down fall.

Really?? A missile moving around Match 10 will be hard for a radar to properly track, even if you manage to track it you will have a hard time guessing it's target because those missiles have a 2000km range and only 1 degree variation would mean a different city, you may only have a chance to guess it's target when it's relative close and we are talking about less than 40 miles and by then you will only have a few seconds to decide your move, launch a counter attack missile and hit the target, and those who knows agree that's very unlikely to happen. So with current technology it's practically impossible to destroy a hyper-sonic missile, the overall consensus is that we should target the launch platform and not their missile. The good news for us is that missile range is only 2000km meaning that our main goals is not to focus in the missile but to keep their jets and submarines 2000km or more from our cities and that's way more realistic to achieve counting that we have way more jets and more submarines.

Imagine a shark with a wide open jaw coming at you, wouldn't you ran the other way? Top marks for the graphic designers, top marks for the concept. Now it is nose to the grinding stone to turn a "concept" into a "prototype", from a prototype into "test phase, from test phase into actual combat situation. It is my believe that the US has many conceptual hyper-sonic missiles, yet none managed to complete its test. I suppose you always need imagination, and good one at that, before you make something super special. A superpower like the US never ceases to churn out those specials such as this "nose twisting" missile, with scary graphics to boot. WOW !!!

"The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error."

I think it is funny that people are not actually thinking about the challenges though and the 'hypersonic' missiles themselves. Not to mention how accurate or inaccurate these hypersonic missiles actually are. The West has some far better missiles , because of accuracy. Russian interception of air targets is also of interest (or lack of it , reduced ability). U.S. really dropped the ball though in rocket research when they started buying engines from Russia... It depends hypersonics right now that are fielded are still in reality primitive Hypersonics have been a thing for decades and still have the same issues they did in the 70’s being truly able to maneuver in hypersonic speeds. You have Russia and China claiming such with computer renders but haven’t actually shown it. You’ve had russia claim it as well in ukraine but showed the flight path was pretty much point A to B and which raised lots of questions. Not only the issue with maneuvering at such speeds without destroying the missile. You also have the plasma and heat issue limiting communications and effectiveness of the missile as well causing them to go “blind” when they reach near or close to hypersonic Speeds Russia, China and even the US all really haven’t shown much to fix this issue beside showing they rebranded IBM’s to be smaller and go faster 😭 which is the reality of these missiles
