India's 5th Gen Aircraft | HAL AMCA

Фильм және анимация

In recent months we have looked at several new fifth-gen fighters, and how they may revolutionise foreign air forces. The first was the South Korean KAI KF-21, a twin-engine, twin-seat multirole aircraft with comparable goals to the F-35. The second was the Turkish TAI TF Kaan, a multirole fighter to replace the F-16. Both aircraft have taken their maiden flights.
Today, we will look at India’s domestic solution; a fifth-gen aircraft known as the HAL Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, or AMCA.

As Indian I would like to put some insights into project : Actually AMCA as a Concept was proposed since 2010 but however for some reason (Probably too much Trust on India-Russia PAK-FA which later become Su57 ) the IAF didn't proceed further with AMCA Development and it remained only a proposed Concept till 2019 when IAF realized the Aircraft being developed under PAK FA won't suit Indian Requirements and Eventually HAL Pulled out of Partnership. Initially it was Planned by IAF that India will First Induct Aircraft developed by PAK FA and then the Technologies from PAK FA would be Integrated into AMCA. However when IAF realized the PAK FA Project with Russia is Falling apart they decided to Back the AMCA Project Finnaly after freaking 9 Years. Then Aeronautical Development Authority started working on AMCA and initial design was ready by end of 2021. It's when IAF made another BLUNDER that was to form a Special Purpose Vechile model for Developing and Manufacturing AMCA but what happened next was No Private Company showed intrest in entering SPV rathe the Private Players used this to Manipulate the Government to finalize the MMRCA 2.0 procurement programme after which they would join the SPV ( LIke TATA's with Lokheed Martin wanted IAF to buy F21 or F15 under MMRCA 2.0 after whixh TATA would join AMCA SPV) This Shenanigans continued till March 2024 when MoD Finnaly scrapped the SPV Model for AMCA and Allocated 2 Billion USD for Developing 5 Prototypes in next 5-6 Years. Meanwhile ADA had completed CDR for AMCA and have reportedly built simulator for AMCA Cockpit ( Photos were Leaked online ) First AMCA is Expected to roll out by 2027-29 if everything goes right. Meanwhile GTRE Have started revamping Kaveri Engine Program to make a 90KN Kaveri engine while it will also Partner with a Foreign Partner ( Likely Rolls Royce / Saffran ) to develope 110KN engine which would then replace GE Engines in AMCA MK1 and MK2

As an indian , i can say gladly this project is the most ambitious project in india till date , even more complex than the manufacturing of Aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. We at ADA wants to develop a AMCA jet in numbers of atleast 4 squadrons with all the possible advanced fifth gen equipments and radars to be as good as the counterparts of US , China, Turkey or Korea. But as you know this development is much delayed due to democratic and beauracratic process in india. I see this getting its maiden flight by 2028 and production rollout by 2030s. I hope ADA, HAL and DRDO meets up with the deadlines and no further delay. Also these information are very secretive and its not really general publics cup of tea to get out these info and so very little public attention is given on this news.

First one must understand that India had no experience in building a second generation let alone a 4 th generation fighter aircraft. Arms import was the order of the day with not one defence deal not mired in controversy. The realisation of self dependence came rather late. The indigenous LCA is an achievement for the technocrats associated with the project. The most heartening thing is that with each new model which are numbered as Mark 1 etc the aircraft is becoming more potent. The newer variants are quite capable of fulfilling their role . They are going to be the work horse of the IAF. With a passage of time the aviation ecosystem is going to mature just like the IT industry.

Some credit where due must go to Mr. Modi( however how much one hates him). He put his foot down on imports and asked the ADA and HAL and IAF to work in tandem to develop an aircraft for its needs. Though not the latest and greatest the LCA is gradually maturing as an aerial platform. It is no means achievement for country accustomed to mediocrity and corruption. With greater participation of the private sector the ecosystem is bound to improve for they are not the ones to tolerate incompetence.

India's growth as a military technology producer, gives a lot of countries a new option as thier own defense supplier, rather then being tied down to the US, Russian, and Chinese manufacturers. Instead, Indian, Turkish and EU suppliers that don't come with the baggage and forced influence of the three major nations. For a lot of smaller countries, having to get their military hardware from the three majors, ties them in as sympathisers to those major nations, something their neighbouring countries might feel threatened by. Buying from India isolates them from that public and nationalistic opinion.

It started in 2008 but real pace started after india rejected FGFA program with russia , a modified version of Su-57 , but it was cancel in 2018 and then amca started getting pace and it got more delayed bcoz goverment was planning a private-public model SVP program to take amca forward but it failed so it got delayed 2.5 years . But now govt has given full clearance and all sub-system has been already in development so timeline can be reduce further . Turkey Kaan has BAE and european NATO assistance in equipments and technology . Southkorea TFX has lockheed martin as a consultant and partner . But india is going for all indigenious options except ejected seat , microprocessors , engine in mark 1 , mark 2 will be close to fully indigenious .

Many here forget INDIA has a successful and efficient space program. The country is planning to send astronauts to the moon. How many countries have such potential besides the superpowers? Yes, a 5th generation fighter jet is a whole different ball game..too much complexities but i'm sure INDIA can manage it. Starting out something is always difficult but if this AMCA project succeeds and is truly indigenous it would give a colossal boost to India's defense manufacturing capabilities and soon the knowledge from AMCA can be used to develop and research on a 6th Generation fighter jet.

Apart from the Soviet Union, India holds the distinction of being the first Asian country to develop its own fighter jet. However, despite this early achievement, India faced setbacks due to corruption and a lack of visionary leadership, which hindered its progress in this field. Despite the initial success in developing indigenous fighter jets, such as the HAL HF-24 Marut in the 1960s, India's aerospace ambitions suffered from challenges such as bureaucratic hurdles, inefficiencies, and corruption within the defense establishment. These issues not only hampered the development and production of fighter jets but also affected the overall growth of the aerospace industry in the country. Additionally, the absence of sustained investment in research and development, coupled with a lack of long-term strategic planning, further impeded India's ability to compete on a global scale in the aerospace sector. Without strong leadership and a clear vision for the future, we struggled to leverage its early achievements in fighter jet production to establish itself as a major player in the global aerospace industry. Despite these challenges, India has continued to invest in its aerospace capabilities and has made strides in recent years with initiatives such as the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft program. However, addressing issues such as corruption and bureaucratic inefficiencies remains crucial for us to fully realize our potential as a leader in aerospace innovation and production.

Timstamp 4:00 to 4:15 - The conclusion here is somewhat erroneous. DSI Intakes and Serpentine Ducting are separate design issues. There are modern supersonic combat aircraft, like the F-22, that have serpentine ducting to hide the face of the turbine engine. It has been known at least since the 1990s as a way of reducing the aircraft's radar signature. The real benefit of the DSI intake is its reduced complexity. No splitter plate is needed, or a variable intake system to keep a smooth air ingestion into the engine. This also reduces the radar signature as there are no longer any complex sharp edged (radar) reflective surfaces on the intake. The drawback to the DSI system is that this intake limits the top speed to around Mach 2. Any faster, and the DSI would not be able to handle the airflow into the engine. Again, this is why the F-22 does not have DSI. but a splitter type intake. The DSI is also a good indication of what the possible top speed is of an aircraft. In this case, the Chengdu J-20 is limited by its DSI intakes to around Mach 2 or lower.

If you're a country and you want to build stealth aircraft. The first thing you have to learn is that you never line up the air inlets with the front of the engines. If you do, you instantly make the RCS about 1 square meter because the radar waves will bounce off of those fan blades all day long!
