US announces new military aid package for Ukraine | DW News

The US will provide Ukraine with more Patriot missiles as part of a fresh six billion dollar aid package. But they won't be supplying any additional Patriot systems to launch them - despite Kyiv insisting that they need more to defend Ukraine's cities from Russian aerial attacks.

The current US aid will last Ukraine until November, maybe the end of the year. The political will may not be there if the tide does not turn, and the analysts say the help may blunt the advances only. Republicans and independents are against further aid. To put this in perspective, this 6 billion is in addition the 60 billion announced earlier this week. So 66 Billion from the US taxpayers in 1 week If the latest 6 billion just just goes for PAC-3 Patriots, that's 1500 antiblastic missiles. He is right about the manpower problem; Ukraine is not conscripting men under 27 or women. If it wants to actually win it needs to put more "skin in the game"

  • @jaarneal

I feel like Ukraine already has plenty of skin in the game. The problem is that the US and Europe aren't acting in their best interest. Both electorates and many elected officials are in denial about Putin's goals, and this leads some to believe (or at least create doubt using the notion that) Putin would be happy to just settle for a few oblasts in Eastern/Southern Ukraine. The enormous amounts of evidence against this notion are simply ignored. This is only possible in the US because the US is tired of war, having just put Afghanistan and Iraq behind us... many are willing to tell themselves lies to wash their hands of it. And this is only possible in Europe because they (as far as I can tell) are not used to worrying about their security... at all.

Russia has already lost the moral high ground - It has lost also any advantage of a quick takeover and now is in a protracted war. Protracted wars like the one fought with Afghanistan are costly in expenditure and military and have a poor outcomes. Ukraine has the support of people who support freedom - ( The developed free world countries and countries with a sense of right from wrong - and Russia has the support of other dictators who at some point will fight with each other over any spoils and - when they don't get paid. i.e. Russia never paid its war debt to the USA so any loans from China and Iran - are unlikely to ever get paid back.

Those systems will not come anytime soon. Just like Ukraine will not get the full 61 billion dollars. Media outlets keep reporting about this 61 billion but fail to mention that a big chunk is going into our defense budget to build and replenish our weapons inventories. This was part of the bill passed on aid funding. Our politicians promised Ukraine weapons but again it has not been reported that it could take up to 6 years for delivery. This due to the fact the weapons manufacturers have to fill previous orders. Also some aid that had been previously promised could not reach the battlefield before 2025 or the earliest by summer. It’s all about money war is an industry any many politicians and prominent figures are the only ones that benefit from the pain. One more point, Ukraine needs to get their manpower shortages squared away and trained properly. Not this 3 week bs they’ve tried before. All it does is make cannon fodder for the Russians. Who I might add is not the same Russian military that started this whole mess from the beginning. From sources I’ve read is that for every one Ukrainian soldier there are 7-10 Russian soldiers. Weapons are not going to mean anything without a trained officer corps and soldiers. They will need to train and replace offers lost over the course of this conflict. Officers are not grown on trees they must be instructed on command procedures, tactics, combat formations, etc not given a group of green recruits and pointed to the frontline.

That's a nice spin, take a small part of the truth the pour a gallon of BS. Essentially what the US is doing is sending Ukraine weapons and equipment from storage (some from the prepositioned stocks in Europe), something Biden had the DOD package up and ready to send since April. They then take the claimed value of those and purchase new ammo, weapons and equipment to replace them. That's basic warehouse logistics. Additionally they are building new production lines to increase production in order to meet the demands.
