Putin removes defense minister Shoigu | DW News

More than two years after the start of the war of aggression against Ukraine, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has not reappointed his close confidant Sergei Shoigu as defense minister. Shoigu's successor will be the current deputy head of government Andrei Belousov, Russian news agencies report with reference to a message from the Federation Council. Putin's proposals for the composition of the new Russian government were received there. No official reason was given for the reshuffle.
However, there had been some speculation about the possible dismissal of 68-year-old Shoigu, who has been defense minister since 2012. A few weeks ago, one of Shoigu's deputies, Timur Ivanov, was arrested on corruption charges. Observers had interpreted this as a sign of power struggles within the Russian military and security apparatus.
Shoigu is reportedly set to become secretary of the Security Council, a powerful post previously held by hardliner Nikolai Patrushev.
Shoigu's 65-year-old successor, Belousov, was Putin's economic adviser for many years and has held various positions in the government in recent years.

Kids died, a newborn baby is in the hospital with burnt face and neck. Many died, wounded, missing. Not a word about it in the NYT, Washington Post, Politico, Economist. All this led to putin losing a very important asset (prigozhin) in the war. Apparently shoigu may not be an accomplice but he got played. Putin is not happy to say the least. Incredible how he would let an economist take his role, someone with zero military experience. But right now, putin values loyalty the most.

As usual Westerm media taking every chance to misrepresent a story. Shoigu had wanted to retire for the last few years already. But when the 2022 war began Putin asked him to stay on to see the war through. Now Putin had just beem reelected, the usual government reshuffling that comes after that, and Putin's probably confident enough about the war to let Shoigu get his retirement. That's the story.

Saying, that Putin "removes" defense minister Shoigu, is a little misleading, because Shoigu was not "removed", but just moved to another senior position within Government. In some of the Western countries it is quite common, and it is called "Reshuffle".
