    His refusal to intervene also, inevitably had unforeseen circumstances also. With the Skeksis gallivanting through Thra and disrupting everything, it seems like the Mystics would absolutely try to minimize their impact. I always wondered why the Mystics did not complete some sort of mass suicide to take out the Skeksis.

  • @RallyCheetah

    @RallyCheetah

    I often wondered that to, especially after seeing Archer shoot the Hunter and then later leap to his death. My guess is they may also fear death like the Skeksis. In Dark Crystal AoR Aughra mentioned how the Skeksis have every right to fear death as they are not of Thra. So when they die there may nowhere for them to go but oblivion. To a selfish Skeksis this is likely a fate worse than damnation. At least by suffering for ones sins there's acknowledgement one existed. To simply turn to dust would mean that despite everything they've done and achieved it'd mean nothing. Not even the universe would acknowledge them. As this is the fate of the Skeksis this is likely also the fate of the Mystics. And while they are for the most part peaceful and passive this doesn't mean they can't be afraid. They likely do have some fear of the unknown but unlike the Skeksis they won't let this fear consume them. As jedi Master Yoda put it, "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering." So they acknowledge they might just disappear someday but don't let it rule them. Rather they spend every moment trying to make peace with this fate. They try and connect with Thra possibly to seek some forgiveness and guidance. They might also not try to kill themselves because they have hope for a better future. There's shown to be multiple prophecies that have been made through the ages. If these are indeed coming from Thra itself then this could mean the planet is telling the Mystics to hold out. That they may have a place in the future if they can wait. So they do. They continue reading stones and the stars and wait for Thra to give them the sign to make their move.

    @@RallyCheetah A good analysts, although from Skeksos and ursu’s monologues, it seems that they both acknowledge the possibility of an afterlife, although while the emperor can only imagine it to be some horrific torment the urru master has hopes of seeing his adopted child again. But I digress, I think the reasoning for the lack of a mass suicide was much in part due to a lack of drive from most mystics. The base instinct to live going against a potentially logical choice of self harm. Beyond that though for as much as they felt guilt over what their skeksis counterparts, Its still not in mosts urrus nature to wish to cause harm to other life, archer seems to be the exception which leads me to think him and the hunter made for a very self loathing urskek. Lastly I think they felt indebted to live for the sake of thra, not realizing the details but still knowing they would be needed to heal the world. Their entire lifes spent trying to understand the world and themselves better through various ways makes it seem like the mystics are serving penance/ rehabilitation for crimes of their counter parts.

    @@jordanelza8806 I disagree. UrSu's entire incredibly long life was spent sitting and doing nothing, more or less. Is that good? Is that wise? He played a zero sum game. Blameless, but also utterly without accomplishment. It was only after all the Gelfling race was wiped out that he deigned to help a single one... and even then that act was tinged with fatalism, because that Gelfling was meant to fulfill a prophecy. The point is it wasn't done simply out of kindness. He had an ulterior motive. The Mystic's lived lives mostly without any kind of ambition or desire. On the surface this makes them seem 'good' but in practice it means they barely live at all. They are the opposite extreme of the Skeksis, yes, but that doesn't mean their existence is automatically positive. Evil triumphs when good men do nothing and the Skeksis were allowed to triumph for a very long time indeed, while the Mystics sat about twiddling their thumbs.

    It’s very fitting in that the light comes from UrSu’s leadership for peace on Thra, while the dark comes from SkekSo’s leadership to rule and kill. Like all the others, a perfect balance of light and dark. SkekSo and UrSu were very similar because of their leadership and their obvious connection, but opposite in every other way. 4:14 to 4:41

    The Skeksis didn't start out as embodiments of evil... because that's never what they were at their core. They are of the material world and they live passionately. They are driven, ambitious, and hungry for everything life has to offer. They care very deeply about the things that matter to them and are willing to fight to the death for what they want. Desire itself is not evil, but can certainly lead to it. The Mystics are of the spiritual world and as a result they barely live in the physical world at all. They sit in caves meditating, completely oblivious to everything going on around them. Interacting with the world as little as possible. They are kind, wise, and thoughtful yes... but what is all that worth when those traits are never used? The Mystics are so disconnected from life, it's not in their nature to care about or fight for anything. A person is not good because they never take any action. It just makes them neutral. For all their faults, the Skeksis lived. The Mystics exist in a kind of living death.

    Ahh, I am back to commenting. I do like the Mystics. I wish I could better understand the rituals they perform. I've read the novelization and holy spit, it's a tough read in some places. I got flashbacks of having to read The Scarlet Letter in high school. Yikes. I gotta lot of gifts for myself this year to cheer myself up, get me through the stress of my last semester for a 4-year degree that had an oddly massive amount of ups and downs to getting there, so I bought a lot of books about Thra and all that resides on it and within it. I'm hoping this'll help me understand the rituals a bit better. OK, now that I've eased myself back into commenting world, strap yourself in for a vent session that has basically nothing to do with Dark Crystal, but I need it. Just don't read the rest of this. Seriously, don't. There are so many other people that have it way worse than I do right now, save your focus and worries for them, please. Just skip this. Don't like it. And if you must read it and comment, well, I can't do anything about it, feel free. I'll try to make it funny, at least. Ok...SO! I made it through my internship, struggled a bit with getting things in but I write relatively well, so the teachers didn't mind. Then, I get the news that my DARS report says I'm 2 credits short. That's less than a class... As you can imagine, I got pissed off. It took me about a span of 13 years to get this freakin' degree because I have issues related to school. I'll be surprised if you haven't stopped reading this by now. For the love of Thra, I hope you have. To continue, I finally get to the end, and I make the tiny but critical mistake of miscounting my credits, so now I have to sign up for one more class, dole out an extra 1.5K and wait another 4 months probably just to be told commencement will be delayed again because we can't seem to pull it together on that vaccine campaign. I delayed signing up until nearly the last minute because I was too busy going over the report over and over, because I was absolutely certain that I had planned out the number of credits needed to avoid an extra semester exactly, to the credit, back before the world took a cue from skekGra and urGoh because the darkening is upon us. Turns out, my obsession for being right was for good reason. I discovered a mistake in the transcripts. The class that has remained my favorite to this day (tied with creative writing class) in which I will brag I did receive 100% in, was marked as not being counted. I knew it! I wasn't wrong! So, I email records and ask WTF? Records say, it's not a mistake. The class had apparently changed its name recently, and I mistakenly took it during the Summer, thinking it was a new class I hadn't done before. At first, the records person was very apologetic. Sorry she couldn't do anything. She was very kind. Many hours of lamenting and frustration later, she sends me another email, saying she might be able to do something, depending on the circumstances of how I took the class. It came down to whether I was told to do it by my advisor, or if I had gone ahead and done it without consultation. I had done exactly the latter, and leaped before thinking, choosing the class myself and patting my own back that I had done it without any help. Pro tip- always ask for help. I thought that I had officially lost the battle and signed up for the class a couple weeks before my discovery of the non-mistake. I began to accept my fate because it was my own mistake for not having asked an expert. I fully expected to be told that no, I could not avoid taking this class. This is one of the few times I've liked being wrong. I get an email back after an excruciating weekend of waiting for the start of the next business day, to be told, to my great joy, that because I did not know about the name change, they would accept the class as my final credit! I DID IT! WHOO! Now all that's left is to celebrate, start planning the party you'll have with your classmates once the world stabilizes a bit, and prepare to navigate Grad school...yay. Oh, that felt good. Good vent. Good video, too. I'm not exactly aligned with some of the decisions urSu, which is one of the reasons I've failed to research them yet. I'm more of a Gelfling fan, I'd say. The point being to expect shorter comments, sorry. I promise, no more rants for a while that don't have to do with DC. Danny, you can even delete this comment if you want and I won't care at all, unless it counts as a strike against me in KZread law, or something. Then don't. I'll live with the relieving feeling that I got a lot of stress out and possibly wrote a decent standup comedy sketch. Been watching a lot of it, and I think it may be affecting me just a bit. Well, I think I'm going to end it here. Thanks for not reading. Bye.
