Urban Island Stealth Camping

Gear I use available on Amazon - www.amazon.com/shop/stevewallis
Camera gear I use - www.amazon.com/shop/stevewall...
I picked up a cheap inflatable raft and paddled over to an island in the middle of a lake in a residential area for some camping. Many very nice homes were close by, so I had to be stealthy. I brought a couple of stealth camping shelter options with me but ended up using a surprise shelter instead. It was a blast as always!

I'm getting a lot of questions about why I wouldn't just boil the lake water. I would have in an emergency or survival situation, but all the runoff from the bird plops on the island would make any of that water taste terrible even after boiling it. In the middle of the lake, I would have easily scooped some up, but I had enough water to get me by without resorting to boiling that water which could be described as "thick".

@Serge S Why would you drink the hot water and boil your drinking water? He brought water so he would drink that and the water boiled would be for the pasta (if you're apart about it) lol

Haha hell yeah my friend same here. I actually managed to do it a few times back in the day. I'd be out driving around with my friends with the camping gear in the truck (I used to camp A LOT), and we'd be out in the boonies somewhere surrounded by farmland and little patches of woods and such. On multiple occasions I would just slow down and cut the wheel suddenly, throw that bitch into 4WD and haul ass across a field or clearing on the side of the road in order to make it to the woods that looked appealing at a drive-by glance. We'd pull in, cover up the truck with some camo netting and surrounding foliage, and begin setting up a little spur-of-the-moment stealth camp site. We did that so many times and frankly I cannot believe we never got caught or anything. In hindsight it was typically just an excuse to drink underage/get rowdy totally unsupervised and a method with which to do so since we couldn't go to someone's house or something back then. Those excursions were also overwhelmingly *stupid* and more than a one may have been executed in a questionable area, likely private property and not exactly as stealthy as we may have imagined lol. In any case, it was always still a TON of fun and I wouldn't change it for anything. Those camps tended to be more fun and more memorable than any of the times we went to an actual campground...

I love the fact Steve always gets his story together in case he gets busted, like he's planning a big heist or something and he always seems genuinely nervous about the cops or whoever!!! When his only crime is pitching a tent or putting up a hammock. But that's one of his many charms. A truly original and friendly guy who's a refreshing departure from most of the crap that's on KZread, or anything else for that matter. Well done Steve and continue doing what you're doing.

Some of the nicer places that would be ideal for camping or even some towns can have very punative approaches to homelessness. I doubt he would ever really get arrested, but I would never put it past someone in a lake house from calling the local authorities just to have them chase off someone who's ruining the majesty of their view.

I remember having to camp overnight on an island when I was about 10, so 1971. I don't remember what lake it was, other than near Edmonton, but my dad and I went fishing there in our fiberglass canoe. A storm blew up making the lake very ruff, so we put in to a small island. Other than our fishing tackle, the only thing else we had was a couple of old WW2 surplus ponchos. With the basic tools, we got a fire going in the rain with one poncho as a cover, and the other as a groundsheet, and cooked a couple of Pike on flattish pieces of wood we found. Rained all night, and we were both very cold, tired, and cranky by daybreak. In a light drizzle, we packed up our stuff back onto the canoe, then left, paddling around the other side of the island, WHERE WE DISCOVERED AN OLD, ABANDONED CABIN!!!! *FACEPALM*

Hard to say about the facepalm-worthiness. Depends on how hazardous further reconnoiter looked to your dad at the time. He took the shortest path to the win that he could see in front of him. Apparently you had the means to make fire, and something to keep the rain off you. Plus side is a cold night that doesn't kill you is very instructive.

New to the channel. Directly subbed. I really like how you don't take everything too serious. There are way too many outdoor channels trying to do the super survival marine stereotype. When you see a kind hearted honest guy being naturally funny without trying, you can't help but smile. People probably think he's a hoarder with that ride packed up fool. I knew a lady who traveled a lot, but is a hoarder, and her car has a bit more stuff, but a lot of it is camping gear because she camp's when traveling. She has stuff happen to her all the time, and once ran over a mattress about 30 miles from work in the winter, and the parking security called up and asked her if she knew she had a mattress stuck under her car. She said no, but thought for awhile she heard a funny noise, but kept driving to get to work on time. Security had to jack up the car, and a lot of it melted and stuck to the exhaust, which took awhile to get it out. Took a long time to live that one down. The crazy thing about her, she learned to scooba dive in her 60's, and she will try anything, her step 2 is wine lol. God bless.

"I threw a pot out there to collect some water in the rain"...I was expecting Steve to show how he was channeling the rain water from the bottom of the raft into the pot, using branches, leaves, maybe the wind breaker of the hammock; some kind of improvised contraption, survivor style, resulting in several gallons of fresh water...Steve then proceeds to show three spoons of water of which he spilled half. I immediately burst in laughter! My damn favorite content creator in YT!!! 😂
