Upper Kaipo Loop - Oamaru and Cascade Huts (Part 1) - Kaimanawa Forest Park

An epic four day, 75km adventure from Clements Mill Road in Kaimanawa. Before starting the hike, I need to drop the car at the end of the road and cycle back to Te Iringa Campsite to save the 12km road walk after we come out. The old bike and helmet are stashed in the bush for our return and we spend the night at Te Iringa Campsite. The first day of the tramp takes us along the Te Iringa track to Oamaru Hut, where we spend the night. We wake to a heavy frost, but a beautiful sunrise and stunning views are the perfect way to start the day as we head off to Cascade Hut via the Upper Kaipo Valley.
In part 2, we complete a 22km side trip to the Ngapuketurua Tops, spend another night at Cascade Hut and head out to Clements Mill Road the next day.

I've been on that loop a few times over the past 30 years. I see that now one has to go to Boyd Lodge from Cascade Hut via Maungaorangi which i think may be a high peak and hard going. I don't think I'll be in that area again- I'm in my mid 80's now! Thank you, my boy for the great video and commentary! Cheers. Ol' Pete.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I'll be getting back down there to do the trip from Cascade to Boyd sometime. Yes, Maungaorangi is 1436m high - similar to the peak we climbed on our third day (in part 2), so there should be really good views from up there. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and it brought back some memories for you!

Gidday Cuz. We did something like that many years back when I was living in Akl. I forget the name of the road where we went in, but it was something like this - first night at Oamaru Hut, then up the Oamaru R to Boyds Hut and a night out in tents in a bog up the Waiotupuritia Stream. Third day was first up to Cascade Hut (which was fine), then a hell trip up to the Clements Road end up a never ending ridge line. It was a hell trip because at midday I was deputed to escort, encourage, cajole, almost threaten a new tramper who was at the back of the group. He was terribly unfit, and carrying ridiculous gear in his pack, and he couldn't walk and talk at the same time - every few minutes he would stop to talk, holding up everyone else... We got to the road end after dark, still to do the drive back to Akl... Lovely country, particularly the views from Oamaru Hut and the outlook from the top of the Oamaru R. I am sure the tracks were in much better nick than you are showing in your great vid.

Hi, great to hear from you. Glad the video brought back some memories - sounds like you had quite a long trip! Not good if you're on a long trip and being held up - well done for getting the other tramper out!

I used to hunt that area a lot. NZ was awesome when the population was only 3.5 mill. There are a lot more people in the bush these days...

It's definitely an amazing area! Some of the huts are definitely starting to fill up, especially the ones on the Te Araroa.

Great video presentation again thank you. That #Kaimanawa_wall looks mysterious! Wouldn't mind the #Oamaru_hut for a house site, beautiful views ah.. Looking forward to part 2. Thanks again C
