A three-day, two-night hike to Whangaehu Hut - the highest hut in New Zealand's North Island, at 2060m above sea level. After collecting the key for the gate on the Tukino Access Road, I make the long drive up the 4WD track to the Tukino Skifield on Mt Ruapehu. From here, I make my way up the mountain to Whangaehu Hut, where I spend two nights. On the middle day, I attempt to climb towards Mt Ruapehu's Crater Lake, but find that the cliffs are too steep on that side of the mountain, without climbing or ice gear. On the final day, I make my way back down to the Tukino Skifield Carpark, following the poled route.
