Overnight Hike to Zekes Hut, Hihitahi Forest Sanctuary
An overnight mission into Zekes Hut in the Hihitahi Forest Sanctuary, Central North Island, New Zealand. Earlier in the morning, I walked down from Whangaehu Hut on Mt Ruapehu back to Tukino Skifield. I then drove about 20 minutes further down SH1, before reaching the Hihitahi Forest Sanctuary Carpark just after Waiouru. The walk though the forest to Zekes Hut is about 7km each way. Zekes Hut is a nice, modern four-bed hut just above the valley floor. The next day, I return to the Hihitahi Carpark.

Are the tall dead trees poking out around the bush because of possums?

Yes I think so - there was a sign inside the hut from DOC commenting on how bad the possum damage was in the area.
