UPITN 15 10 76 PRIME MINISTER IAN SMITH INTERVIEW

(15 Oct 1976) Rhodesia's Prime Minister, Ian Smith, has warned that the guerilla war in his country will not stop at the drop of a hat, even if the up-coming Geneva conference produces a pre-majority rule interim government. In a televised interview with press from Britain and Australia, Smith said Rhodesia could expect a de-escalation and a gradual fading away of terrorism but he added that he was sufficiently realistic to know that it could not be stopped "at the drop of a hat ".

Makes you ashamed to be British on the way we let down Rhodesia. Now we've all seen what happened, have to say this was a lost opportunity for millions of people.

ric 63 you guys are worse humans on earth. Everywhere you went you left devastation behind. We all see how you fought in both world wars to defend yourselves from being ruled but you thought it was ok to rule over other. You even recruited fighters from your so-called colonies to help you fend off the invaders by force. How arrogant. You are the real savages.

Buba Barrow Calm down now, those aren’t really words you’d want to be using, don’t assume that the British are “the worst humans in the planet”, and that they’re all “savages.”

@@bubabarrow4960 You're a uneducated bigoted fool. Learn about the history of humanity and you will see endless examples of savagery from all races, all across the world. Were the Brits ruthless...yes, did they have a over-inflated sense of superiority...yes, did the citizens of a tiny island manage to out smart, dominate and control over a quarter of the world...yes, why is that? I don't agree with all the Brits did and some actions were shameful. However, i am looking at it from a 21st century mindset. "Everywhere you went you left devastation behind" look around the world, the systems the Brits invented are being used in all successful countries. From the military/police structure, banking, courts, industrial/manufacturing etc, if anything the systems have been improved upon in places. India still use the train lines built by the Brits during the Victorian era. Why am i wasting my time commenting on KZread...i don't know!

Buba Barrow Boohoo Must have been so hard for you to have running water and modern medicine and electricity and ... etc. The fact is about 25% of people on earth are alive today because of the British Empire. We had to civilise YOU! We we found you you hadn’t even invented written language yet. We are the furthest thing from savages and I won’t apologise for making the world a better place. White men in general should never apologise for giving the world almost everything.

Today the country is starving. Not to speak about all the people killed and droven away. Also a story about racism.

@Katherine Sparkes Thank you. Indeed, I travelled the Uk for years. Manchester was ok, but in Birmingham I could not understand a word. Of course, the US slang, South Africa, English in India. My favorite is Aussie English. Of course, local dialects are existing in all countries. Germany, France, Spain. Beside the funny higlights of Indian English I like Russians speaking French.

I just can't understand why "the world" was so interested in what happens in Rhodesia! Rhodesia must do this, Rhodesia must give this or that portfolio to this or that group!!! What the hell has what happens thousands of miles got to do with Britain or the US or indeed anyone else!?? When was the last time Britain gave a shit who runs Burkina Faso , for example, or when they had their last election or which portfolio was held by whom!!! But they are so INSISTENT that Rhodesia must do this or that!!!!
