Upgrading my Dell XPS 15 9570! [SSD RAM & Wi-Fi] | The Tech Chap

Ғылым және технология

I use the Dell XPS 15 9570 for editing 4K video, but 6 months after launch it's due an upgrade. I'm adding 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD & a new Wi-Fi chip - but will it make a big difference?

Hi Chaps! Thanks for all your comments - Quick update: 1) If you're doing this upgrade, you could go for the newer Intel 9260 Wi-Fi card (faster, BT 5.), I already had a 8265 laying around so I wanted to keep costs down (and still improve my Wi-fi reliability) 2) Some of you are saying I re-connected the black/white antenna wires incorrectly on the Wi-Fi chip, in fact the Killer card required them to be the opposite way around compared to the Intel. Which is why I reconnected them in a different way. 3) Be very, VERY careful with the two phillips-head screws under the flap. They are extremely soft and easy to thread. 4) You can unplug the battery before doing upgrades if you need to, better to be safe than sorry, but it's not absolutely necessary. 5) Here's a link for the wallpaper: imgur.com/gallery/Ytp5l Hope you enjoyed the video! Cheers :)

It's a small detail but it's really cool that you showed the ENTIRE process, including after installing the new SSD. Most youtube videos don't show that part. I haven't used Windows in a while, and reinstalling Windows 7 on my old Alienware desktop was NOT that easy after I replaced the mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" old school SSD. It's nice to see that if I actually opt for a new windows laptop for my daughter or something (since most schools use windows), it will be easy to upgrade the machine. TU for the helpful video.

I just want to say how happy it makes me to see a KZreadr who does 4K video editing who isn't using a Mac. It's not that I don't have an issue with Macs - but the sheer unity of video edit types who simply assume "Video editing? You need a Mac!' is so frustrating. Nice to see someone doing the same thing with a Windows 10 system.

I cant imagine how many laptops I've tinkered inside of, once the trend towards internal batteries became a thing I stopped caring about unplugging them and I (nor anyone I work with) has ever had a safety issue. Ok I'm being a little glib there but honestly if you are just swapping cards and you fry something something else is wrong with the system as that should not happen. Some laptops let you access memory/ssd without even opening the laptop in which case you would have to take the whole thing apart to do what you are talking about to perform what would otherwise be a 3 minute upgrade.

Tip for those looking to install a traditional SSD into their laptops (possible for m.2 nvme SSD as well, but potentially more finicky) connect your SSD up to your desktop PC (If you have one) and use macrium reflect to copy the contents of your desktops storage onto the new drive, then install the drivers for your laptop into your new SSD and delete anything not needed on it. Then install into laptop with a ready to go SSD, with the same setup as your desktop PC !

For more advanced users: if you want to use hardware encryption on Samsung, you have to magically enable it *before* installing OS, effectively, running it through Samsung Magician on other already installed PC :> Screws are too soft, so proceed carefully. Some people re-paste CPUs with better paste, undervolt CPU while at it and put additonal cooling pads on SSD, power transistors. Fan cleaning isn't bad idea either.

i just upgraded with the crucial 64gb kit, worked fine after second try. first try the ram was not "detected", so i did the good old "have you tried turning it off and on again" (in this case taking the ram out and putting it back in again) and it worked ;-)

Hi mat, im looking to do the same thing. Is it a safe bet to do this? I do 3d rendering and could really do with the extra memory. Kind regards

the interiour of the XPS looks so much like my MBP 15inch 2012! just now I need to upgrade and unfortunately it won't a mac again, won't pay 450€ for 1TB SSD. that's simply madness.

Hi Tom! your videos are super cool, keep it coming. Can the removed ssd be used as an external drive with some sort of adapter? I searched in amazon, i am not able to find a PCIe based adapter, only SATA is available.

I've love your video Tech Chap, to the point where I just ordered an XPS 15 9570 and the same SSD and RAM in your video. One thing that ISN'T CLEAR is after you reboot the system with the new SSD, where do the drivers come from? Did you have to download them all from the Dell site or are they also in the BIOS? And you said something about the Bios automatically installing Windows 10 to the SDD so you didn't have to do anything?

Love your videos. You explaine very technica stuff for the lay person like me! I have the same computer and was wondering whether you are encountering heat issues. Even when it is "sleeping" it is hot to the touch. Once I wake it up the fan kicks in ad it cools down. I am worried that the laptop will over heat when not in use.
