From a fellow rat lover, wire flooring is really rough on ratty paws and can cause issues like bumble foot which can lead to serious infections. A quick fix would be to lay down some wash cloths or towels over the exposed wire flooring. (:

How wonderful! But be careful with the saw dust, as when urinated on and left it can cause respiratory infections. Also careful with the ''bridges'' in the cage, as my ratties nails used to get caught in it! So I decided to cover it with fabric which I washed weekly :)

My son had 3 "family" sets of rats during his childhood. Oh the memories. Thanks for reminder of these intelligent but gentle creatures. Rats are so much more kid-friendly than gerbils, hamsters, etc.

I used to have a rat like the black and white one so, this video brought back good memories! We would stuff a few tissues in the cage wire openings because he liked to pull them through and decorate his milk carton with them! He would even make "windows" in the carton!

I had never been around them. My friends bought 2 for their young kids. They couldn't have dogs in the apartment and the dad was allergic to cats. I wasn't sure how they'd be with the kids. But they were SO SWEET and gentle! And my friends were great parents who taught the kids how to handle them, so it was never any problem. They were wonderful pets! I have thought of getting some. (If I ever find a full time job again.) The only bad thing is they don't live very long.

I'm so impressed with the care you give to your animal family, even the smallest. And the way your family gets together for these events. Love to you all!

It's true! My ducks eat better than I do. (I can hear it every time somebody goes to the store: what do you mean, we need more lettuce?) And Dennis says that we have an opossum nesting in our backyard on the shelf by the door. He says they eat rats. I haven't seen any rats lately. I saw a little mouse in the duck house one night and a couple of lizards. I don't know why these ducks haven't figured out they can eat the lizards. I think we feed them too much. Our old ducks we just used to throw the scraps of the back door. And they would eat anything. These ducks are spoiled. They have the good duck food and everything. Of course they have to share it with the squirrels and the birds and the ibises (But thankfully this morning there were only three ibises. In the middle of the summer, there were 12. I used to think they were pretty and they never came near us but then they started multiplying and eating all of our ducks' food. And then one day we found one that was bleeding and we had to take it to the sea bird sanctuary. Thankfully at least we have a seabird sanctuary and they take care of the injured sea birds. If we find anything else that's injured we never know where to take it. It was really busy that afternoon when we went to the seabird sanctuary. And it was really hot so I didn't want to walk around as much as Dennis did. And it was feeding time so it smelled like fish everywhere.)

I feed my piggies veggies before bed so I can listen to them crunching as I fall asleep.

I have never seen an egg peeled this way...I will try it next time! The rats look happy with their new home.

@@oneseeker2 yes that response is correct. The renovation was running up in cost so they plan to stretch out the repairs and I believe they are considering reselling att some point.

Rats make such awesome pets, they are so curious and smart! They love to take food and hide/store it for later, cute! For our two rats we had an empty tissue box and would leave fresh tissues and they would make nests in the box. Your daughters joy with these rats was so sweet to watch, thanks for sharing!

Watching these rats bring back wonderful memories. They are totally under-rated. Like someone else said, they make better pets for kids than gerbils and hamsters. I remember my brother letting his perch on his shoulder and taking him around everywhere with him. Thank you for sharing and bringing about warm moments for many of us.

Agatha is a good little helper. Yay, she discovered the fun of bubble wrap! Aaaaaawww, the rats are adorable! They remind me of the rats my friends used to have. They were so sweet, even with the children. They LOVED the little hammock bed, so hopefully yours will too. If I ever find a full time job again, I would like to try having rats. I am allergic to dogs and cats, but I was okay with the rats.

I watched you all put the rats' new home together, and it reminded me of this past spring, when I put together a big beautiful cage and and furnished it and had a cabinet/bird cage stand specially built for two budgies to come live with me. They get the best food, fresh water twice a day, a perpetually immaculate cage, lots of toys and lots of attention and affection. Their names are Petey and Peeps, and I love them so much! 🥰 I can see the love that all of you have for your little friends. I'm so glad you all are doing OK!

So i just discovered your channel the other day and keep coming back for the beautiful cosy humble and interesting (foreign to me as I live in NZ) family lifestyle and then I saw you have rats!!! I had 7 rats over the last 4 years and we lost them all as they have such a short life span but they made life better having them and seeing you create this beautiful little cosy home for them has been so healing for me. I love watching your channel especially now knowing you have rattys!!!

the rats match your cats in color!! i’m surprised the cats don’t obsess over the rats being there - they are good siblings it looks like!

One of the sweetest creatures I ever had was a pet rat named Oreo.. He was truly sweet and so funny and loving..

Nice project for your family to do together but the bars on that cage are way too wide for rats. Rats can squeeze through very small gaps and spaces and you're going to find that cage won't hold them in for long. If you want to continue to use that crate you'll need to add mesh wiring all around it to prevent them from getting out. Good luck!
