UNTOLD: Group Chat Leads To 8 Years In Prison | Channel 4 Documentaries

Ойын-сауық

Following the brutal murder of a 16-year-old on the streets of Moston, Manchester, a group of friends joined a Telegram chat - they say to grieve and vent their anger. Eighteen months later, these group chat messages formed the key evidence in a trial in which 10 teenagers were presented as a brutal gang, who listened to drill and plotted revenge. All were sentenced to a total of 131 years in prison.
One of those teens sentenced to eight years in jail - is Ade. He had been head boy at his school, was a promising sportsman and high-flying student with an offer to study law at university. His sent messages in the chat though none of those messages has ever led to an attack on anyone.
In this film Abayomi, a 22-year-old student who knew Ade, investigates how someone with a bright future, who had never been in trouble with the law, can get jailed for sending messages. He explores: the use of conspiracy law at a time where there is a lot said on social media and in app group chats; whether this sentence fits the crime and asks if race plays a part in the way that gang trials cases are built.

I'm black myself but this documentary tries so hard to paint a picture of complete innocence of the boys involved and I don't fully buy it. I don't think Ade deserves 8 years but he he had one foot in and one foot out. He did so much amazing stuff but he still had some form of affiliation with the streets. He dropped a whole postcode and the social workers defence was 'no one went to the address', do you know how crazy that sounds? It's not about whether they went or not, its about the INTENT behind dropping the postcode in the first place!

Talk about church and all, let's refer to scripture. Christ says in new testament that we murder in our hearts - we do not need to definitively perform the act of killing, unjustly, in order to be deemed murderers in gods eyes and therefore to sin the ultimate sin against the holy ghost. He is guilty as sin.

But you know what, my friend don't get killed in gang violence because none of us are in a gang! This is not black culture. This is gang culture. This is crime, full stop. They were going round committing crimes, just because they were 'friends from church' doesn't stop it being a gang or atleast violent and criminal. They're carrying knives and plotting to harm others. I was caught up in the same stuff when I was a young kid and luckily nothing like murder transpired but I could have very easily been sent down if it did and I'd only have myself to blame. I was mixing with the same kinds of kids (all different ethnicities), trying to be tough. Our communities need to take responsibility, parents need to take responsibility. Being from a poor area isn't an excuse. I've been chased like in that 'non-violent chase' by people with knives, it doesn't feel non-violent when you know if you stop you could be dead. How anyone can think the police haven't done the right thing here is beyond me. Lenient sentences will just encourage more crime. The Youth Worker is delusional too, for a start drill music isn't 'just' an art form when they're actively talking about who they're going to hurt, everything about it is about violence. Here's an idea, change the narrative, stop rapping about guns and hurting people. Stop rapping about the people from the other side you're going to kill. And one lapse in judgement isn't an excuse when someone's life it at risk. They need to start taking responsibility and stop blaming everyone else.

Regardless if no violence happened at that address you’ve taken part in a discussion that has lead to someone ending up dead giving information to where they might be found. Any teenager could get caught out in that situation thinking its indirect but it’s conspiring as soon as a crime is committed. The uk justice system is still very prejudice towards black males giving longer sentences for the same crimes as other races. However I don’t think they got this one wrong unless we scrap the conspiracy to commit a crime out of the law book which will never happen. What this teen participated in was a conspiracy to murder.

He was involved with gang members. Was caught contributing in a group telegram chat (an app synonymous with dodgy activity). Dabbled in drill music, which describes violence a lot more and in more detail than hip hop or rap has ever done. His problem is that people are tired of sharing oxygen with gangs and anti-socials. By "people", I mean honest, hardworking citizens who just want to make a better life for themselves and their families without hurting anyone else. They are pitched against the perp's families, friends and sympathisers (like the Youth Worker who claimed it was a "non-violent chase" smh), because these are often damaged individuals who are against the establishment by default, and see in these situations an opportunity to show allegiance to their side, as well as channel their anger and disaffection with society.

The thing is. If someone you love is killed in a violent way, thoughts of revenge will go through your mind. What would be helpful is great mentoring that takes over when these instances take place. Mentoring & counselling offered to the friends & family that can help them to redirect their anger. Ade just needed to remember that with all the positive he was doing already, that could have been the best tribute to his friend. All he needed to do was continue. It sounds to me that Ade was conflicted between two worlds, the world where he wants to achieve and be successful, and the other trying to fit in with his group of friends who some may be up to no good. Bad company corrupts good character. You can be wrong from an act or an omission (a failure to act). You will end up dead or arrested, if you are with a group of friends who carry weapons and some randomer starts shit and your associates end up using a knife the police will come after you purely for being with the guilty and they will Perdue charges. If it's not police getting you involved through association it will be gang members maybe they will se you alone and remember you are friends with X and Y and pull a knife on you! However from what I could tell, I believe God would have a problem with a lot of the associations he had and the way he spoke and what he listened to. His laws reach deep and I think God may have used this to punish him. It’s just sad that all of the things that led him here were brushed over as if they are nothing. Hate to say this, as a now older black man who grew up in inner city black London culture, but this show, for the most part, seems to be aiming to excuse and deflect from the reality that our young black boys in the inner cities lack guidance, direction and hope and the culture glorifies violence. It just does. Let’s not sugar coat it. Until we accept there is a real problem we ain’t ever going to fix it. For me, I chose to move to Africa and work on building in the motherland for others there will be other ways to find purpose. Making excuses and playing down crazy acts of brutal violence isn’t the way.

There's too much knife etc violence led by this behaviour and music that also fuels and stokes situation with negative lyrics. The people have no one but themselves to blame.. I've been stabbed in my lung twice. In my kidney, hit in the head with an axe. Sliced down my back with Stanley blades. I'm scared from head to toe. I know exactly what it's like to be entrapped in that life and way of thinking. Your mind is some where else. All you care about is music, lyrics ya gang, how other people view when they see you. You live for street cred. There's obviously a lot of social factors that are way too many to go through and explain how they impact the mind of a child. Poverty, house with no father, education, etc. But my gripe is music. Drill and trap music that glorifies that way of life. The BBC will show crying mothers and a picture of the dead child and flowers where he died. Condemn the perpetrators, and then on BBC 1 extra you can hear the music that's brainwashing these kids to do the shit they are doing. Any way....lucky enough. But a sad set of circumstances. I found my self in jail again with my daughter's mother pregnant and my son out side with out me. I couldn't look him in the eyes on my prison wall pictures. I refused to let him come to the jail. And the same jail that I used to visit my dad in and in the same visiting room. I've been out of trouble for 5 years now. I know it's not a long long time. But I'm finally away from all this madness and loop that predominately black youth young adults find themselves in. It's only an issue now. Because it's affecting white Youth. They was ok when we was killing each other. But either way. Let's do something to stop this madness.

Wearing a balaclava is almost always used with the purpose of concealing one’s identity, black or white. The purpose of anonymity is often crime. In conclusion, black or white, it’s hard to claim that you aren’t in a gang if you are wearing a balaclava.

Just makes me wish more black youth stopped listening to Digga D and started reading Thomas Sowell. The problem _is_ the culture. These black kids view their lives as expendable because they’re being told either by their parents or the establishment that they’re starting off on the back foot (despite the fact that for the last few years the lowest performing group has been white male boys), so where are their aspirations coming from? Their environment. Cliques have existed for generations, as a kid I was part of several friendship groups and gangs, but we never had drill music telling us it’s cool to have “opps”. We never had Snapchat, so we never felt the rush of creating a buzz over some online beef that then turns into real life violence. These kids need education, but race has nothing to do with it, poor kids come in all shades and religions - if you don’t know that then you’re not from there and you definitely don’t visit.

“One little slip up” is all it takes unfortunately… I empathize with the young man as I grew up in a similar environment, and understand the conflict of being a high achiever yet on the fringes of gang activity because you’re hanging out with your childhood friends. However, my sympathy is unfortunately capped. Everybody wants to appear tough until they catch that case, then they become a “victim” of the system. Ade clearly wasn’t like that, but there’s enough evidence here for a jury to conclude that he had intent. He was not the aggressor of any violence, but there’s clear evidence of him threatening and inciting violence and that’s enough. Reasonable conviction here based on the info, I’m surprised this is even up for debate. Everybody involved sounds delusional. Especially the youth worker. It’s about time our community stopped identifying as victims started taking accountability for our actions and the public image WE continue to portray. The system will only oppress you if you allow it. Let’s rise up and strive for better. Staying true to yourself and going against the grain is cool. Let’s change the narrative.
